I chopped my whole potted mandarin tree cause it lost all its leaves for lack of watering, so I cut it half way and left the tree trunk ONLY, 3 weeks later so many tiny new leaves starting coming out from the trunk and it turned into a dwarf beautiful bushy with lots of branches potted mandarin tree. I actually thought it was dead when I decided to chop the whole tree and just left a piece of trunk.

This was very helpful. By time I realized pruning was a good thing, my tree was tall af and like 5 years old. Now that I’m pruning, I’ve gotten more branches and you’ve given me a bunch of direction! It’s looking like it’s tryna do something now! 😂

Hi. Just FYI, I bought a Rubbermaid hand truck/dolly that’s meant for large trash cans from Amazon. I bought it to transport heavy pots indoors to overwinter my citrus. The base is large and round shaped, perfect for pots, and has large wheels so they don’t get stuck in gravel and grass, very helpful and makes moving heavy pots very simple. There are plant dollies but they are very expensive. Thanks for the video.

Just be careful if you are in a hot area. If you prune the canopy and the trunk get sunburned. It can damage the trunk. Thanks for a great video! The lemon tree has a beautiful frame to it! Looks great!

@PlantFanatics
@PlantFanatics Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Mealybugs can be a pain, but I've got a quick solution for you - neem oil! Just mix a few teaspoons of neem oil with a liter of water and spray it on the affected plants. The neem oil will smother the bugs and also act as a deterrent to prevent future infestations. Give it a try, and let me know if it works for you!

The vase shape of pruning (as I understand) is more for stone fruit, apples and pears. Citrus benefit from a closed canopy. I’m still learning about mangoes 😜

Thank you for this video! I have been growing my lemon tree from seed for the past 3+ years. I did have to prune / cut it back (low) and now it is healthier than it has ever been. While the bottom is quasi bushy, there is a significant apical growth. Q1 - Did you say I can prune now... even with foliage? Q2 - How long before my little one blossoms and fruit? Q3 - Do you recommend I cut the protective thorns? Thank you in advance!
@PlantFanatics
@PlantFanatics 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! Sorry for the late response. You can prune a citrus tree at any point in the season. It doesn’t matter if it’s dormant or not. As far as a timeline to when the seedling tree will fruit, only time can tell. It could be anywhere between 4-8 years or more sometimes. You can cut the thorns off if you wish. It doesn’t harm the tree. 😀

Hi! Not directly related to the content of this video, but I have a question I'd appreciate if you could help me with! I have been growing a lemon tree from a seed planted about 4-5 years ago, but it has not produced any fruit yet! Unfortunately, I didn't learn about the grafting part until quite recently; my question is, would the tree give me lemons at any point in time? Thank you!

Great video! Thank you! One question about re-potting... when do you know it's time to size up? What do you look for? Also - I got a lemon and a lime tree at the same time and they have always been next each other, but my lime is half the size, and has only produced fruit in 2 of its 4 seasons. Any tips?
@PlantFanatics
@PlantFanatics 3 жыл бұрын
For up potting you want to see if the root ball in filling the entire pot. If it is then you can either prune the roots to avoid getting an even bigger pot, or you can just go ahead and give it a bigger pot. For your other issue I would put both the trees on a regular 3 month feeding schedule during the growing season and see what happens. You can see what you need to do next from there. Thanks for the comment!

Someone gaveyet. 1.5 ft lemon tree last year. We had it outside for the summer, brought it indoors in October. (We live in zone 7b/NYC.) We supplement Light with a grow light. It is still indoors, has grown taller, leaves look great, but they are secreting a sticky substance. No buds in sight. Is this normal, or sign of disease?
@PlantFanatics
@PlantFanatics Жыл бұрын
The best way to know is to give the plant a close inspection and search for signs of pests. Pests or disease certainly has the capability of causing the excretion of a sticky substance.

Can you do this excessive pruning also with a kumquat potted tree ? Because its also a sort of citrus.
@PlantFanatics
@PlantFanatics 2 ай бұрын
Kumquats seem to be a slower growing citrus in my experience. I almost never prune mine and it stays quite small. Granted it’s grafted on a dwarf rootstock and in a container. If you find yours grows extremely rapidly you can prune accordingly without issue.
