Another piece of advice I’d like to offer.....get a scrap piece of wood, paint it with your chalk paint that you’ll be using and try out different topcoats in small sections. See which one you like best and the look you are going for. This has helped me immensely with learning what to use and what not to use.

Definitely search out a topcoat that's safe for food contact. Watco (the brand) makes a nice specific butcher block sealant. Check that out.

A very good video Here in the UK I use an oil-based varnish on most items, unless it’s a very light colour and then I use a water-based varnish .. just as you suggested :) I never use wax ... just seems to me as a poor substitute for varnish. It’s pushed by the chalk paint sellers, the same way they always try and sell special chalk paintbrushes as well as wax brushes. Paint, varnish and a decent normal brush ... perfect !

Brian Morrison Hey thanks! Hello to you over in the UK! I’m glad you found this video informative. When I first started out 8 years ago I think I waxed most pieces (never the top). I didn’t know any better. You are correct when you say that wax is pushed by a lot of the chalk paint companies. I actually make my own chalk paint. Much cheaper! I now mostly use water based Polycrylic over my painted pieces and oil based poly on my stained surfaces. Sounds like you do the same.

If you don't apply a topcoat of either a wax or a water based sealer like Polycrylic your paint won't last as long and it will be prone to chipping. I highly advise applying a topcoat of some sort over your paint to protect it.

Depends. If you stain the cabinets I would go with General Finishes Gel Poly. Great protection, easy to apply. If you paint your cabinets, I would go with an enamel paint. The topcoat is built into the paint.

Hi there Madeline! I have a huge dining room table (it seats 8) that we use daily to eat on and sometimes the kids are there doing school work. I just stripped it down from cherry to the bare wood and repainted the legs a matte black. I don’t want the top coat on the legs but I do want a top coat on the bare wood. I am going to use a wood conditioner before applying the top coat however after that I am not sure which one I want to use for a top coat. I did purchase already the polycyclic already but after watching this I am wondering if I should use the oil based top coat? What are your thoughts?

I would definitely use an oil based topcoat on top of a dining room table. Water based topcoats are durable but for a dining room table that will see a lot of wear and traffic I would go the oil based topcoat route. With that said keep in mind oil based topcoats usually amber over time. Some people don't mind this, others mind.

Black is a very tough paint color to get a non-murky, non-cloudy look especially if you want a flatter less shine look. I have lately found a wax that really gives a clean non-cloudy look. It's by Maison Blanche. I have used their Antique Brown and their Espresso colors. I also have dabbled with applying an oil based topcoat over black paint. Yes normally this is a big no-no. Normally an oil based topcoat would turn any painted piece amber or yellow it BUT since it's black it really doesn't matter. As always I recommend people testing on a scrape piece of wood and not "try out" a new product or method on a newly finished piece of furniture.

I opt not to mix oil based products with water based products. Can you? You can but you need to wait an extended amount of time because the two products are compatible. There's a lot of gray area with this. For this reason I advise people to stick with oil based stain and then oil based topcoat. Try General Finishes Arm R Seal. Very easy poly to apply.

242ThinkMedia A Topcoat over black paint is tough. Sometimes applying Polycrylic will appear milky over black paint which is the last thing you want. I’ve heard the way to get around that issue is to add a little black paint to the Polycrylic to eliminate the milky look over the black paint. Also I would recommend to a novice (if applying a poly by brush causes some anxiety) a polyurethane in a spray can. I use this often on chairs. It’s by Minwax. It’s water based, it says oil modified polyurethane in a clear satin. I usually apply three light coats and wait 30-60 minutes between coats. Super easy to apply. I hope I’ve helped you.

michaela huba Great questions!!! The reason I sand inbetween coats it to ensure a super smooth surface the next time I apply another coat. Most often little dust particles will land in your topcoat as it dries. Once your topcoat dries take your hand across the surface you will most likely feel little bumps here and there. They may not be visible to your eye but you can feel them. If you don’t feel any of those raised areas by all means skip the sanding. I just know I usually find a few. Now when I say sand inbetween coats I mean very, very lightly sand. Almost feather like. Polycrylic dries pretty fast so I wait anywhere between a few hours to overnight to sanding inbetween coats. I hope this helps. 😀

Brenda B The type of poly you use on kitchen cabinets all depends are your cabinets stained with an oil based product or are they painted? The overall rule is if your cabinets are stained I would use all oil based poly. I love General Finishes topcoats. Super durable. Easy to apply. If your cabinets are painted I would use a water based poly. Water based Polycrylic would work well. If you are looking to paint your cabinets I love enamel paint. Enamel paint requires no top coat, just paint and be done. Regarding your other question about sanding. I always lightly sand inbetween my topcoats. When I say sanding it’s really minimal. I use 400 grit sandpaper wrapped around a felt block and lightly sand to knock down any raised areas due to dust. It truly makes a world of difference. I hope I didn’t overload you with my answers. Brenda B You definitely picked the right topcoat you want a water-based topcoat because if you go with an oil based over paint it can turn yellow or amber overtime or sometimes immediately so that’s why it’s really important you use a water-based topcoat over paint. This is invaluable information, thank you so much! I did know about the potential yellowing, but I heard from a source I really trust that it's a bit more complex. That the trick is the do water based sealer over water based paint, and oil based sealer over oil based paint, to avoid yellowing. Do you have any insight into this? Yes that's the general rule of thumb water based topcoats over water based paints and oil based topcoats over oil based products like stain. Kevin Schuck Whatever topcoat you go with make sure it is water based. A topcoat that is oil based will yellow your white paint. They do make a water based spray Polycrylic. I have used it and I really like it. I hope that helps!

Chris Desmarais Yes you can use Polycrylic over chalk paint. Polycrylic is water based and works great as a topcoat over paint and on cabinets. Just make sure you prep properly before applying it. It does have a learning curve to using it so I would advise applying it on a scrap piece of wood first.

Stained table top and seats. Now I'm on to top coat. First time project with stain and it's a big project. I have the minwax polycrylic. But I'm concerned about applying it to the spindles on the chair backs. Would you recommend the spray can? Or just carefully apply the polycrylic? Or should I use the general finish topcoat? I would definitely recommend applying General Finishes Gel Topcoat over your stained areas. You need to apply an oil based topcoat over your oil based stain. Also with a dining room table top an oil based poly will give you a more durable topcoat. Regarding your painted table base and the chair spindles I would apply the water based Polycrylic. Bottom line- Oil based stains work best with oil based topcoats and water based paints work best with water based topcoats like Polycrylic. I hope this all makes sense.

Okay PROS to GF Gel Topcoat Very durable finish, I use on kitchen tables, coffee tables, high traffic pieces, looks great over stained tops and natural wood, very easy to apply, levels nicely. (Keep it mind it may amber over time, so I would NOT put this on over paint.) PROS to water based topcoat Very durable finish compared to a wax. Less durable then oil based poly but still good. Works great over painted furniture. You must prep your piece properly when using this product. Comes in many different sheens.

Hi there, first I would advise that you will need to search for a topcoat with UV protection. As you know, corn hole boards are mostly enjoyed outside in the sun so your topcoat needs to have UV protection otherwise they will yellow over time with most any other topcoat. Regular Polycrylic does not have UV protection. I've heard good things about DEFT water based polyurethane but I personally have not used it.

The young fellow at the store told me that watco clear lacquer would be a good idea to put over my cabinet that I intend to bleach and stain with whitewash pickling. Is this a good idea, or would polycrylic be a smarter choice?

I've never used Watco clear lacquer as a topcoat before so I can't advise. I do see mixed reviews online about it. I would highly advise any topcoat you do decide on that you test it out on a sample board on top of the paint you used.

Polycrylic has a bad reputation for turning yellow. I've used "Master Clear Supreme" by Modern Masters. It's water-based as well but is far superior to Polycrylic. Disney World uses it on their whole park, to keep colors bright and vibrant in the Florida sun. My brother uses it on front entry doors that he installs (they're fiberglass, hurricane impact doors that are gel-stained. Conversion varnish is supposed to be the very best for cabinet doors but that's a whole different animal...

Surgicaltoolbox RN Health Beauty Hi there! When it comes to UV protection on wood that will be outside the majority of the time I would recommend a brand call Epifanes. It’s a high end marine spar varnish, you can find it on Amazon. Epifanes was tested on outside wood furnishings and it came out much superior to consumer grade spar varnish, and would be especially superior to consumer grade varnishes containing polyurethane. Also remember what really destroys outside wood faster than UV is moisture and cold. I hope this helps. 😊

Alissa Baron Hi there! I use the gray gel stain quite often and I always use the gel poly by General Finishes as my topcoat. I have had no issues with yellowing.

Tyler Clearwater The coffee table has a gray stain on the top. I love General Finishes gel stains. Super easy to apply and the stain dries very fast. I also used their gel poly topcoat in a satin finish.

Donna Walters I would definitely use a water based topcoat over your painted top. Minimum 5-6 coats. Normally I advise three coats but because this is a dining room table I would go the extra mile. It’s worth your time to put on extra coats. Stay away from anything oil based.

Donna Walters What specifically would you like advice on? I’m happy to help. You mentioned painting the table correct? Does that mean the entire piece or sanding/staining the top and painting the base? What type of wood is the table? I would definitely prime it. Clean first, prime, then paint.

When using wax finish, does it require always reapplying it to the furniture piece every few months?

Judy Postma That all depends on the piece of furniture and how you clean the piece of furniture. With wax you can accidentally remove it by using harsh cleaners. Just use a dab of Dawn soap on a wet paper towel to clean wax covered surfaces. Rule of thumb is you may need to reapply the wax every 6 months to a year. I’ve had a few personal pieces where it’s been a couple of years and they are still holding up fine without reapplying the wax. Each piece of furniture is different. I personally don’t use wax on the top of high traffic pieces like the top of a coffee table or the top of a kitchen table just because of heavy use.

When you know you are going to use Polycrylic, what is the difference between regular liquid vs. spray aerosol? Is quality the same?

I use the spray aerosol mainly just for chairs with lots of spindles on the backs. It just saves me time. I find I get the same protection and it looks the same.

Brenda Lee I’m so glad to hear you found this video informative! The rule I have always heard wax is last. Normally you can’t apply Polycrylic over wax and it adhering well. I’ve been told the best way is to remove the wax with mineral spirits and then applying the Polycrylic.

Theres water rings and oil spots and the heat from plates leaves marks. Will the mineral spirits lift the paint too if I want to remove the wax? Then which is better water based polycyclic or polyurethane?? Help! 😢😢

How long after you have finished painting or staining do you wait until you apply your wax/finish? And then how long between each coat of finish do you wait before you sand and apply the next coat?

Anahi Jara I’ve personally never applied a water based polyurethane over a painted piece of furniture. I’m not sure if it would yellow or amber your paint. I always apply water based Polycrylic.

If your desk top is going to be high traffic. I would sand and then stain the top and then apply an oil based poly. That would hold up the best with frequent use.

I painted a couple of metal suns w/ finger nail polish (it's an art project), & I'm having trouble deciding which top coat to use. They are metal, w/ several layers of different color nail polish on them. And they are hung outside facing the west in south carolina which is hot & humid. I tried just covering them w/ clear nail polish, but over time it yellowed & cracked. Any suggestions? Ty!!

Jaded Optimist Hi there! I would strongly advise you applying the chalk paint over a scrape piece of wood then applying the Polycrylic over it to see if you like it. Definitely practice. If this is the first time you are using Polycrylic I wouldn’t try it out on your friend’s cabinets until you feel comfortable applying it. I just know it can take some practice. I normally advise people to use enamel paint on kitchen cabinets. You don’t need a topcoat with enamel paint and it’s super durable.

Thank you for your information. Can I apply the polycryclic over something I've already used Annie Sloans wax on or should I take that off first? Also I have another piece that I did the same but now has water rings on it, can I paint another layer of the Annie Sloans paint over her wax and then poly it? I'm not sure how it would adhere to the wax. Also what do you suggest for outdoor wooden furniture. I have a couple of pieces of furniture I like to put on my covered porch that I am redoing and would like to seal it on top of the semi gloss Emerald Urethane Enamel paint from Sherwin Williams that I used. What would you suggest?

Hi Julia! In the furniture restoration world there is a saying WAX IS LAST. So you can apply Polycrylic and then wax, but you can't apply wax and then Polycrylic. It won't adhere well. So your best bet is to remove the wax you have applied with mineral spirits. Then you can apply another layer of the your paint and then the Polycyrlic. Regarding protecting your outdoor furniture I've heard good things about Olympic Water Guard Wood Sealer. Comes in a spray or a gallon. I've also heard good things about General Finishes Outdoor Oil.

Hi there! I love your videos....and your dog! :) I have a question. We just attempted our first milk paint project on my dining room table and chairs. We used GF Milk Paint in Queenstown (dark gray). Then we used GF Polycrylic. It appears to have almost taken the paint back down to the original color (black) in some areas, just with brushing this product on. In other areas it looks lighter and almost like those areas were missed, though we've done two coats. We have not attempted the tabletop yet, as we are afraid to ruin it. Any advice? This poly thing is a little intimidating for novices, but I know some sort of protectant should be applied. Maybe use the Minwax spray? Thanks in advance!

To be honest, we just started painting. Never sanded, as so many people said that wasn't necessary. Sounds like we watched the wrong videos before starting our project. :( I think we are going to have to start sanding and begin again. Can I ask what your thoughts are on using Minwax spray poly, on chairs? The chairs seem especially challenging when applying poly with a brush or a sponge. One thing we have learned so far....

Brandi Mcmillen Yes prep is key! Sorry that you will have to begin again. Usually when there is a breakdown with paint and topcoat adhesion it’s a prepping issue. There are so many products out there that CLAIM to be no prep needed and it’s so misleading. I have used a spray poly. It works well when it comes to chairs. Much, much faster. Just beware the can can spit the product out at times. Just have a synthetic brush ready to quickly wipe the spit away. That’s what I have done.

Thanks for the video. Have you tried "Master Clear Supreme" by Modern Masters? I've used it quite a bit on different projects, from front entry doors to cabinets to faux-painted walls and murals to theater floors for stage plays that included a whole cast of tap dancers. It doesn't yellow, as far as I know. Disney World uses it for their whole park, to keep the colors bright and vibrant. I like how it's water-based and easy to use. But apparently, if you want a really high-end finish, it looks like conversion varnish is the way to go.

I have not tried the Master Clear Supreme by Modern Masters. Sounds like an incredible product. I'll have to look into it. I have used their Dead Flat Varnish and really liked it. It's a true Flat/Matte finish.

Mason Cloud I wouldn’t recommend it. Here’s my reasoning. Paints are usually water based. The gel poly is oil based. My rule is water based surfaces regardless the color (like latex paint) need to be protected with water based finishes like a clear wax or polycrylic. Oil based surfaces (like a stained top with oil based stain) need to be protected with an oil based finish, like the gel poly. I hope that makes sense.

Don't know if you've tried the High Performance topcoats yet but I love them. Much prefer them over Minwax. They self level beautifully and even air bubbles tend to work themselves out.
