It’s likely that the more basic models at that price will not be built or imported for a good while, which means a couple of years hence, by which time they may well cost £60k+ with inflation; similar money to the First Edition. Beware of teething troubles or specifications that will soon change with First Editions. Land Rover brought the first edition Defenders out with the 2.0 diesel which they soon discontinued in favour of the 3.0 straight six, partly because their 2.0 proved to be unreliable at that time. It wouldn’t surprise me if a 2.0 was not reintroduced to the range to compete in price with this Cruiser though.

dude u arguing with tiny brits? they have like 1/100 of Australian land and basically no proper offroad tracks like we do in Aus. they also get rain 24/7 so rusting for them is more possible. let'em drive their tiny little vw golfs and ford Fiastas and we can have the land cruisers. lol @@adriand1401

I drove my wife's boss 150 Prado out to Canteen Creek in the Northern Territory. While driving the black-top of the Stuart Highway I said, "I don't know what all the fuss is what the Prado". Then we left the highway and headed east to Canteen Creek. With every passing kilometre the revelation sank in. "Now I get it, this is a very good vehicle". Then last year my neighbour had to leave the country and sell his cars and one of them was a 120 Series Prado with 270,000kms on the odometer, so I bought it. Being the 120 GXL it also has 180 litre fuel capacity.

I have a D300 Discovery, out of 12000 miles driven in a year perhaps 600 are driven in snow, mud off road. The ride, refinement, handling and economy are infinitely superior to the Land Cruiser. I would think that it would go anywhere that the LC will go, tow just as much, but optioned up is more expensive.

The new Defender is very nice to drive, on tarmac... Mainly due to the air suspension, but it's not very nice inside. So I suppose those that want that extra smooth ride around town and motorways will prefer the Defender. I was going to buy one until the news came out for this, so put myself up to reserve one. Can't wait for it but won't arrive here where I am until October.

4:00 a description of the 1GD-FTV engine: "the message is clear here. I know it looks cool and desirable, but it's a workhorse underneath". Interestingly enough, in parts of Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand and Indonesia, afaik), these engines are tuners' favorite. Us Indonesians love ladder-framed diesel-powered SUVs for a number of reason: 1. Decent fuel economy 2. Cheap(ish) running cost due to availability of cheap diesel fuel 3. Good tuning platform, at least from engine standpoint 4. Perceived prestige, since these vehicles are favored by high-ranking officials.
@calavino2237 ай бұрын
1kd is much better for tuning. more robust and less electronic to play. a favorite among offroad enthusiast. 1gd has potential to be a high tuneable engine but at a higher cost.

Funny how there seem to be subtle differences in locking the diffs on the USA and EU models. In USA you get a button for rear locker and center locker and switch for H4 and L4. Yet in the EU version the switch has H4F (free?) H4L (center locked) and L4L (low, center locked), and only a button for rear locker and the other is empty, maybe for a front locker option? That would mean EU could get it triple locked from the factory which is awesome, but why the difference?

My wife really wants one of these. I agree with her that it’s very nice (especially the editions with the round DRLs, those are slick!) but it’s simply impractical since we don’t go off-roading and the MPG is so low. That being said… I am very glad this car exists, and I’d very much like to drive one someday.

We love our Prados in South Africa and Australia. The biggest problem with this is big and heavy and the engine is too weak for its size. The outgoing Prado has the same engine and it is sluggish and if you want to tow in remote areas diesel consumption goes down the toilet. The indicative price really deserved a V6 diesel or the US petrol engine. Other than that it’s a great vehicle and will sell loads.

In a world of crossovers and coupe SUVs it's a nice change to finally to see authentic cars launched, like the J250 and the GX 550, that are true to themselves and not trying to be something that they're not. Make authenticity, durability, and personality great again!

Fabulous, apart from the engine. Why does the USA get the more fuel efficient and less polluting turbo petrol hybrid - as used in the Lexus RX in Europe - which also has more power and torque?? 😡

why does Europe get a 3 row LC!?!? (oh, same reason. The hybrid battery steals space in the back, in exchange for better fuel economy. Want to trade!!??)

Just looking at it and its posh brother the Lexus GX550, These definitely killed the Discovery 5 and maybe the upcoming Discovery 6. If Land Rover Can’t get their reliability right, they’re in trouble. LR has a lot of catching up to do, their model line up is currently outdated by most rivals. Their service department needs improvement, Some parts are on back order and the wait times are crazy. The Recent vehicle security vulnerabilities are not helping either. And the worst of all, Their entry level Discovery Sport and Evoque has lost touch with reality as they are getting long in the tooth and the retail price for those two doesn’t make sense in most market with the current economy.

It's a shame they stuck with the old slightly underpowered 2.8 four. I hope they upgraded the rear diff - the previous Prado had a tendancy to strip the crown gear if you were still applying throttle when the rear wheel came back down to earth. That being said - as much as I would love an EV equivalent - that is probably maybe a decade away and this may be my last IC 4x4 to pull the boat or the offroad van around. Keenly awaiting pricing here in Australia - you can tell they don't want to eat into Landcruiser 300 series sales e.g. by not bringing in the turbo hybrid but I would estimate it will start at maybe 80 or 85k here and go up to 110-120 which will price it out of range of most. Ironically - the Tank 500 IS coming soon with a turbo hybrid and starts at mid 60k drive away, but obviously that doesn't have the same kind of cachet even if it does come with a bunch of nice additions like - cooled seats - they would be very welcome here in Australia.
@peterstaggs19567 ай бұрын
A true Toyota buyer is unlikely to be interested in a Tank 500 POS. As a current Prado owner any GWM vehicle is not EVER going to be considered.
@fishfullness7 ай бұрын
That's certainly what they're counting on yes. Actually- it looks like the 250 does have cooled seats based on the odd shot I've seen of the dash but it is likely to be either only on the top spec or available as an option (no doubt bundled with a bunch of extra options you may or may not be interested in). I think it's touching that you are speaking for the character of all Toyota buyers and know the true reasons for them buying what they buy ;)

I've been looking at old FJ body-off restorations - love 'em, but. I won't say they were inferior to Jeeps in the USA, but, in my experience (late sixties through 70's) the right gear made all the difference in the right terrain. Body lifts, suspension lifts, and tire technology were beginning to evolve; 15" rims and 30 x 10.50 - 15's rapidly gained notoriety but could rub the springs/ frame across the board. Rust was an enemy and limited fuel capacity was an issue. When our president returns, all foolishness gets the boot in the USA and the Land Cruiser demonstrated here will flourish! I can wait.
