StigCam: Hyundai i30 N vs VW Golf GTI | Top Gear

I spent a day driving the i30N around Millbrook a few weeks ago, and it is a very impressive car. The e-diff is fantastic, and gives incredible front end bite in all conditions. The engine sounds good and feels strong, and there's a playful feel to the handling that reminded me of a Peugeot 306 GTI-6. What's more despite a full day of being thrashed to within an inch of their lives, including one car that spent the day being revved to its limiter in neutral by 60 or so people so they could hear the pops and bangs, nothing broke, fell off, or stopped working. The idea that a Hyundai would be mentioned in the same sentence as a Golf GTI would have been laughable a couple of years ago, but this really does do things a GTI can't. Mostly deliver a genuine sense of fun and a level of interaction in the handling that is missing from so many modern cars. It's an absolutely brilliantly set up, thoroughly developed car that deserves to sell as fast as they can build it.

The hyundai is the only car in it's segment and the only car that i know of apart from Mclaren in the world that is maintaining the warranty for the car even with track use. Awesome stuff

The Hyundai I30 N is a daily driver built by Biermann to be pushed and punished, and that's why Hyundai won't void your warranty if you take it to the track and push it. The GTI is a plush daily driver that will not withstand the punishment. VW now has to up its game, which means better brakes, bushings and suspension upgrades to run with the N.

I'd prefer it if they put firmer bushing in the GTi driveline. eg. pendulum mount, engine mounts. They axle tramp like crazy even in some daily driving circumstances, especially when it's wet. A tiny bit of extra vibrations shouldn't make the latte crowd buy something else.

the manual already puts up a good fight because of the rev matching and torque vectoring and slip diff. i work for hyundai as well as own an i30n and you would not believe the amount of tech that goes into this cars gear box and engine. it will even put the turbo into over boost if youre just under the power band and you can hear it whistling way above the engine sound until you get in the power band then the engine takes over. in addition it will increase the rate of flow by the fuel pump too. the clutch is an absolute monster because it is built for reliability too and if you put it in second instead of 4th at 90 mph cause im an idiot sometimes the gear box will cope with it very well and it will slow the fuel pump down starving the engine until youre under 7k revs. all in all it is a serious bit of kit and lot of people dont know it in full.

Great stuff. The Golf is not even close to being compared to the i30N. The discussion that lies ahead is when Hyundai beefs this up to >300hp and mates it with that DCT which will allow it to go H2H with the Type R, Focus RS, 308 GTi in both power and 0-60 times. The chassis seems very capable so the platform is there. Perhaps further down the road, they slap-in a bigger displacement engine together with AWD ... we could be looking at 0-60s in mid-4 to 5s (taking on RS3 and M2)

I actually own a 2014 Golf GTI and I absolutely adore the thing. It does absolutely everything I could ever ask of it. It's reliable, efficient and I think it looks stunning as well! The Hyundai might be sportier, I still love the overall package of the GTI and just the allround capabilities of the thing. It's so damn good in just about everything it does. Of which only 0.05% is track driving in my ownership. Couldn't ask for more, probably going to order a Golf R soon since I like to change my cars frequently. This GTI stays in the family though. Kudo's to Hyundai for making a good hot hatch! It's not a brand I have any connection with and the design is not for me. But I do wish them all the best. Liking one of these cars doesn't mean you have to hate the other. I wish all future buyers of these cars an awful lot of fun!

The Hyundai Ns are amazing cars and I don't understand why other manufacturers in the same class, don't include the custom options the Ns have for standard. It seems like Hyundai actually understands people who wanna have a blast here and there and like speed - custom tech options for engine performance adjustment, stability systems adjustments etc. but also a good old _manual_ gearbox. Real drivers who can actually drive fast wanna have control over the gearbox. Automatic gearboxes on fast cars is like adding a supermarket basket in front of your Yamaha R1 - it's just shouldn't be there. Autogearboxes will also make you slower, will hinder your abilities to drive fast, and that of the car's no matter if they have normal and sport modes - what the computer has in mind is totally different to what you wanna do. (why would you do this VW to your amazing car? Ok maybe you see the new Golf as a family car really, for the family guy who just wanna brag by never going above 30 towards the local supermarket, but DCT auto on the Polo? Pleasee...) So yeah, some new tech is good, some no. Even WRC drivers with electronic sequential gearboxes wanna control the gears themselves, they would never just leave this up to some 'sport mode'. While I'd say no to autogearboxes, electronically adjusted suspensions by the driver, and other stuff the N has is definitely a yes. I think Hyundai got it right with the Ns. Especially this i20N... small light and powerful, that's a proper fast little beast!!!

From all that I've watched and read, this i30N with the 271bhp upgrade is at least the match of a Golf GTi Clubsport *and* it's cheaper *and* it comes with a better warranty *and* it drives at least as well if not better than any Golf GTi. Harris really needs to drive this, it's right up his hot hatch alley - in fact, I'm baffled why he hasn't done so to date.

Neo VeNoM do you have one? Because I do and you can snowdrift all day without any interference. Regular gti = no complete turnoff esp. Clubsport and R = complete turnoff esp possible. You actually have to press the button for it and don't do it in the menu. Else it will turn over to 'esp sport'.

Lol, I30N is frst generation made up by BMW ex designer... Its poorly made (seats are rubbed of after 10k km)... Its unconfortable to daily driving. Motor will be dead after 120k km and transmition is just bad. In Golf u have 7 generations of development... Even grandma can use Golf as daily driver and than beat I30N on track if she know how to drive with turned on stability control.... German Big I think when he wrote "235 vs 275" he meant that the GTI lost because the less amount of horsepower. I meant that it did not lose just because of that, especially when it is as wet as it was. Chassi, electronics and brakes need to be taken in to consideration. I was not referring to the price range and I don't know how you based your conclusions on that.

And power to weight isn't so different. These cars aren't really about track times anyway because they REALLY aren't performance track machines at all, or lap time heroes. It doesn't matter if one is slightly faster than another, it matters about the complete package/price and what values buyers prioritize. It seems clear from every review across the world that the i30N is a better drivers car, while the GTi offers slightly less performance and involvement but more luxury qualities (at a higher price too).

hyundai is doing fantadtic job lately i agree that. by the way hyundai still needs to prove durability. nobody knows when the engine problem should happen. that is what ppl care for in terms of hyundai brand. works more fantastic than golf. faster than golf. but what if breaks down more often and earlier than golf. the only thing hyundai has to demonstrate is a one word. durability. 3-4 yrs later still work fine then i would consider buying i30n or veloster n whatever hyundai makes.
