The car is fine on its own *The problem is the marketing and naming. Should just let Supra go as a legacy name* As a car enthusiast, can you REALLY HATE on a RWD roughly 350HP SMALL COUPE SIZE SPORTS CAR? Do you really want to support SUVs instead? Do you? Sports cars are already BARELY made , manufacturers can BARELY justify their development costs for most companies. Toyota only justifies it through partnerships and sharing R&D and manufacturing costs with Subaru and BMW. Imagine how many billions it would take for Toyota to R&D a new inline 6 engine from the ground up AND invest in manufacturing capabilities for a car that will barely sell. And yes, just reconfiguring a factory floor can take millions or billions.

It's not like only Toyota is benefiting from the partnership. Neither the Z4 or Supra would be released if it wasn't for the deal. BMW has many other RWD convertibles in their lineup, the previous Z4 didn't sell well, so it's not like they needed another one.

- whoami - I don’t understand how smaller companies like Mazda can create their own cars, and design their own engines, but the worlds most profitable automaker is trying to convince us that they couldn’t afford to build their own Supra, and if they did build their own Supra it would cost 100 grand. I don’t buy it. I think that’s just their excuse for being to lazy to put in the effort. I mean, Chevy was able to design their own mid engine vette, design a new engine for it, and sell it for about the same price as this Supra. Toyota took the easy way out and let BMW build this for them. It looks to be a great car, and I’d be in line to buy one if it weren’t covered up in ugly fake vents (that were NOT made to become functional).

I think it ended pretty good. Japan turned from a imperial empire. To a country with capitalism and democracy. It also ended up increasing the Japanese economy immensely. If Japan didn't start the war with America I'm most certain Japan would either be a imperial empire or communist nation with not the best economy, but a good military and you wouldn't see any of these car Manufacturers you'd see to today with Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki. Basically Japan would most likely be a isolated country.

I don't know why anyone would give this car a try when there are plenty of sports cars to buy from than a BMW... I mean Toyota. You could buy a performance package Mustang GT for 1000s less, get more power, the engine would sound better, and parts would be cheaper, if not easier to find. Or look at a Focus RS if you like something a little more nimble around the corners. Compare the prices (after options), and power from all three vehicles. That's my opinion, though. Hope you enjoy your rebadge Z4, my friend.

Agree with OP. With exotics that share parts, even engines, the appeal of the car goes beyond just the engine. They’re not just rebadged versions of another car like this is. And as far as the prohibitive cost of Toyota developing a new Supra on its own, that’s Toyota’s problem, not the customer’s. They’re supposed to be fighting for our business in the marketplace, and this is the opposite of a differentiated product-oh wait, it has a Supra badge. Consumers have to keep manufacturers honest. If we roll over and accept whatever they put out, then we’re encouraging cash grabs like this. Maybe that’s really where the market is headed.

I bet you do not have the mark 1 A80 supra, nor perhaps driven one... I did drive it back in 1995 and raced it with my 1989 pontiac trans am... Didnt have the bottom grunt to keep up with the trans am upto 85 mph and was after boosted to go up to 157mph... Nothing special really back in the days... Small trunk and make belief rear seats, compared to my pontiac trans am with the natural 5.7 liters engine!!!

@@smittgy576 Except where Porsche was forced by consumer backlash to re-add manual option to the GT3 when they went PDK only. A sports car is often less about the raw numbers and more about the experience, hence why the little under-powered Miata is still a strong seller today despite beige sedans having quicker 0-60s and 300+ hp. So for your average driver who buys a 50k car for status yes it doesn't matter for many enthusiasts it is a significant issue.

Allan Croskery thats a fair thing to say and i agree with you to an extent, but it would still not make much financial sense to pay the additional cost to outfit the car with a manual, as they would likely lose money by doing that. Toyota already had to partner with BMW in order to create the new supra, so i dont think they are really in a position to lose money on a car which they did not even have enough money to create themselves.

Toyota doesn't have a running straight 6 engine, the JZ series engine wont pass modern strict emission control. if it wants to built one from scratch, it will take extra time just for testing alone. And the stand alone new Supra will most probably come to us sometime 2021-22. The reason why Toyota brought this car back is simple - fast n furious. Come back too late and ppl will forget the madness of supra featured in film series. Both BMW and Toyota are smart companies. There is something that Toyota is offering to BMW in return. Just like Mercedes Benz and Nissan. Merc supplied engine tranny combo for Nissan Skyline and Nissan shared it's Navara truck for Merc to sell.

@@4BillC the b58 i its m4 g82 form (S58) packs 510hp stock, the b58 platform is very competent, the main problems for tuners is closed ecu with very strong encryption since 2021 and the direct injection, papadakis had to make their own intake manifold in 3d metal and they also have a stand alone ecu fully programable, but they got 1000hp, and soon others will follow, the b58 engine is very competent and has the strainght 6 inline heritage from the 2jz, i rather have this supra with a bmw shared platform than have no supra at all, enthusiasts are idiots killing their own cars, son its gonna be either electric commuters or million dolar petrol cars, the sport cars for poor mans will no longer exist, you either buy a classic or a electric.

This is probably the most inaccurate Supra video in existence so far.., For one it's not just using a BMW parts bin engine, the B58 is an engine that Toyota actually co-developed with BMW with their partnership starting as far back as Dec' 2011 ~ Jan' 2012, meaning even other cars that use a B58 engine prior to the Supra benifit from Toyota's R&D which was very different from how you put it where Toyota tested it & gave their thumbs up approval (that's not how it went down). What actually happened is Toyota repeatedly took every bit of that engine back to Japan for material testing, X-ray, deformation, shear, yield strength testing and so on. They literally re-engineered things down to even bolts, in fact this hardheaded strongarmming by Toyota is a key reason BMW isn't too keen on working with Toyota again, though to be fair BMW did have to foot the complete engine R&D bill. Sticking with the topic of engine, the Z4 engine & the Supra's arn't even identical engines as you try to say, yes they're both B58s but they have different turbo & other related componentry. One is an M class engine the other is an O class engine with completely different power delivery. This is due to the electronics being tuned completely differently, by totally different companies. You suggest that it sounds like a BMW engine contrary to how a lot of reviewers actually say it sounds completely different to the Z4 & in fact it's been complemented for being able to get the 2JZ undertones, (which honestly isn't too important as its kinda just a refined Stright-6 sound). Not only does it sound different it drives different which brings me to my next point, While its true Toyota & BMW co-developed new A-arms shared by both cars the rest of the suspension was made independent of each team's presence. A lot of it has to do with Germany's laws against badge engineering, meaning after the basic proportions of the platform's wheelbase was finalized the two teams split. This results in the two teams using different componentry for much of the suspension. Toyota refined what bits it would use and it's tuning, because whilst BMW was eventually in charge of cold weather testing, Toyota were in charge of on track R&D. This also resulted in Toyota's bespoke tunning of the vehicle's stability, traction, breaking, E-Diff' & even transmission electronics. Which brings me to my next point, you are literally the only reviewer who thinks the (nonBMW industry standard) ZF transmission isn't good/fast enough, everyone else has praised it. It's not a DCT nor a proper manual (which isn't a criticism to the transmission but a lack of choice, which is fair). But the ZF "is" fast as heck, with one reviewer even going as far as to say it's the best version of the ZF transmission in any car., European, Japanese, American, anything (Matt Pharra IIRC). My last point, yes, the two cars are built in the same factory, but it's not a BMW factory, & nor is it in Germany. It's in Austria, like you said, what you left out however was that that company is called Magna Steyr, which is a Canadian company (yes seriously, Google it). Why is this important, well because these guys are responsible for building low volume cars for many manufacturers, at many times simultaneously even. The point I'm trying to make is both companies get to dictate the assembly process individual to one another, so even the order in which parts go on & even how they go on is completely different just like how the two cars are. Thing is, being TopGear you should all know this already, you could've used this opportunity to teach the misinformed public a thing or two, instead TopGear gets on the it's a re-badged Z4 bandwagon to be funny, when badge engineering "Is Literally Illegal For BMW!"

My personal opinion. It's way too small, looks stubby. Engine I can forgive, I guess it's made to be modified into 680hp. The gearbox I can't excuse. No manual and at least a dual clutch with big column paddles would be ok. It has the style cues of the old Supra, it has the straight six but it's...just not there. I'd still rather an old one over this.

For the Supra to appease us mk4 purists, it would have to be LC500 based. Even if it had a reworked version of that 5.0L v8, I don’t think many people would complain because it is all Toyota hardware. That would have been most similar to the situation in the 90’s since the mk4 was all Lexus SC300 based. They price would have been similar, adjusted for inflation, as well. A supra was somewhere around $80k. I’m sure a stripped out, less luxurious LC500 could be done to have a $80-90k price tag but then it would be unattainable. With that said, I completely understand why Toyota chose to partner with BMW on this thing. And I’m glad to hear all the positive reviews

The first thing I see is him slamming the gear stick, as if he is pretending to change gear in a manual car, and needed to slam it, then him flexing, because that is somehow relevant?...... Yes, maybe he was putting into a sports mode, like on most BMWs, but it is an electronic switch, it is unnecessary to be so heavy handed that it appears you're trying to relocate it into the engine bay, and it is probably now mildly broken, haha....

@@RR-us2kp those Ferraris had 300hp. I'm not sure what expectations you have but, the Supra was never meant to take on 600hp supercars stock.

@@rosemaryshelburne5231 those Ferraris had 300hp. The old supra had 276hp. Because it was limited by Japanese law. Even then, it could give the Ferraris a run for their money. The new car is great. But using the supra name on something mediocre isn't what I was expecting. It was supposed to be Toyota's pride and joy. Something like Honda's NSX. Not a slightly lame tribute made by other manufacturer's leftovers.
