I've enjoyed watching these reboots of the original tutorials, even though I've had over 1000 hours with CSS and Tf2 there are many techniques to mapping I never knew. This installment actually taught me a lot about the vertex tool which I had previously neglected until I took an interest in surf maps for Tf2. I mostly can't wait until later optimization techniques involving area portals and such, since I never fully understood those.

Great tutorial, everything is explained quite clearly and informatively. One quick question though, is it possible for certain vertex manipulations to cause graphical corruption in the 3D view of Hammer? I'm using the L4D1 Authoring Tools version of Hammer on Windows 7, and at very rare moments, the 3D view will briefly change into lots of colorful surfaces and edges in the same places where my brushes were. Reloading Hammer seems to fix the issue for awhile, but it still comes up.

@Euroliite11 жыл бұрын
Is it more efficient to just use a single brush for an arch and create more vertices with ctrl+f? I know hammer has a limit on brush faces/sides so it would take out the sides that are touching each other, unless sides that touch other sides don't count towards the limit.

That isn't a circle, it's just a hexadecagon. Do later videos show how to cut out an actual circle?
@TheYagich9 жыл бұрын
NoriMori There is no possible way to cut out an actual circle in Source, as it is limited. Unless you want to be mad and clip it so much that it looks perfect.
@NoriMori19929 жыл бұрын
***** Ahhh, I feared that might be the case. :( That seems like a rather glaring limitation! O_o Wow, I even just checked the singing vortigaunt pipe, and true enough, it's not actually a circle! Amazing that I never noticed this! Does this apply to entities and textures as well? Is it impossible to create a circular plate, or a building entity with a circular window texture? Or does it only apply to brushes? The eyes on Aperture Science turrets seem to be real circles, and the personality cores are spheres, and have circular eyes… So I assume that's different?
@TheYagich9 жыл бұрын
NoriMori Models and brushes are different things so yes, it is different. It is impossible to create a circular plate without making VVIS fucked up and thus making everything laggy. Also, I kinda lied that there is *absolutely* no possible way of making perfect spheres. You can do this with Displacements, but that'll really make your map size larger. As about textures, those are simply image files, just converted to work with Source. Props can actuakky make an illusion of a perfect circle with verticles and polygons, but I'm not a modeller. If you want to make a cylinder that actually looks decent enough to be perfect, you can use 12 faces, as show on the video. Don't forget to make it a func_detail however, so VVIS doesn't cut a visleaf when your map is compiling.

How do you make walls at a 45 degree angle, without them intersecting adjacent walls in weird ways?
@MathewAlden10 жыл бұрын
***** Okay... You know how when you have two walls meeting at a right angle, you clip them each at a 45 degree angle so they mesh. If I have two walls meeting at a 135 degree angle, I would want to clip each wall at 22.5 degrees so they match. But I can't because 22.5 degrees would be working with coordinates that are off grid. Do you have any suggestions?
@ComradeCheekiBreeki9 жыл бұрын
+Mathew Alden that sounds like a fucking math problem, the way you described it. But i think the only solution would be to change the angle of the walls because having to clip them at the angle you are describing would be off the grid.
@SirYodaJedi2 жыл бұрын
@@MathewAlden Late reply, but you don't need the touching brush sides to be the same angle as each other. For 90 degree corners, I usually don't bother clipping diagonally, and instead just line up the end of one to the side of the other (lazy, I know, but it reduces brush count sometimes). For a 135 degree corner, I make both ends touch, but only one of them is clipped diagonally.
@MathewAlden2 жыл бұрын
@@SirYodaJedi If you only clip one of them on a 135 degree corner, then things won't line up correctly; either one wall would need to be thinner, or there would be a little gap, or the two brushes would be intersecting each other. Although, it's probably not a problem if two brushes intersect. That wouldn't cause a problem for Hammer, would it?
@SirYodaJedi2 жыл бұрын
@@MathewAlden I didn't think about the differing thickness; I suppose that could be an issue. After 4 attempts, though, I think I figured out a method to maintain thickness without overlapping brushes or using split walls (I don't beleive there is any issue with overlapping brushes as long as the brush faces aren't coplanar, though). What I came up with is to use a 6-sided brush for the diagonal brush. KZbin won't let me post a link to the map source file here, but I have on my GitHub (same name as YT) in the Yuis-Map-Files repo at Source_1/_Agnostic/135_degree_wall.vmf. Edit: actually, figured out a way to do it without extra faces; just needed to move some verts; the latest version should now have a box with that method.

You are mixing up 'convex' and 'concave'. The solids in hammer must be convex. They cannot be concave. Memory hint - 'cave' part can help remember which is which. A bit odd to not immediately see any comment pointing that out.
