Yeah that's how a lot of plants work. If you want a more bushy plant you need to top it. I'm from Southern California and the only reason I say that is because what I'm about to tell you is legal over there LOL. We do that with weed plants AKA marijuana or cannabis plant because if you don't top a weed plant I just hit one dock with one big bud and a bunch of little bugs that won't be of any value. And we actually top it orb in the stems probably about 20 times throughout the vegetative state in order to turn it into a bush. So what would be a 8ft plant or 12ft plant that is probably 2 ft wide ends up being a 10 or 12 foot tall plant that is now 10 or 12 ft wide as well resulting in dozens and dozens and dozens of buds instead of just a few. I can turn a plant that if it wouldn't have been top for the stems bent it would have only produced at most 1/4 to 1/2 lb to a plant that will now produce 6 + pounds all the way up till possibly can if you're a good grower and know how to fertilize at all the critical stages

Beautiful farm! I’m so jealous! Thank you for sharing! This is my first time growing them from tuber and these were incredible tips! I’ve only ever bought blooming dahlias at the nursery and mine were just growing and growing and growing. Like... getting about 36-48”! So hopefully I’m not too late to top them and still get a bloom this late in the season in Texas ! Here goes nothing...

I was so happy to find this video. I purchased my first dahlia plant...well two so I'm on a learning curve. Tney are dinner plates size(mine aren't that large though and then just a bush style. Anyway, trying to educate myself. I think I found found my new favorite flower. I'm retired so I have time to baby them(smile). Thanks again!

Whaaa!?? I never knew it was possible to do a topping this “late”. I top When they are about knee height or a little less but I will be brave and do it again when I see a first bloom. 😢 but I trust it will be a great move!

Ladies thank you so much, I want that success in gonna hack them back. I was wondering why are they so tall. I wanted a bushy plant but right now they look like tall sunflowers. God bless you and your business.

Wondering, what if we cut them down like your father does but with hedge clippers. Can we cut them back when they are 20 Inches tall, ack to 10 inches tall, we need them for our farm this summer and fall and this is my first time growing for sales. I have only grown for my garden in the past. Thank you for the information. LOVE your segments!!!!!

When you said large is grower in the beginning are you talking about largest grower of dahlias? Or just largest grower of anything when it comes to square acreage or mileage I guess at that point?

So when you say cut off the first bud, but do you mean the first bud on each stalk or just the one bud, as you cut 2 off the second plant
@GardenTime4 жыл бұрын
You can cut everything to the same height whether it has buds or not. In the fields they use a mower that cuts everything down to a one foot height.

Can you cut the flowers down like your Father does with the mower. One fell swoop all at once?
