Hi Clay, Yes you have put some fantastic vids out there for us amateurs.My thoughts on this video are If you can start down with your left arm after breaking your left wrist to top of backswing then make the right hand move to compliment the left hand (Mr Ben Hogan I wish I had two hands)a great shot should happen. My other thought is this. The right hand /palm moving down and then back to target line is the golden move for all of us coming over the top swingers .That move gets the club down so you can hit from the inside.Many thanks again for all your videos and great efforts to help us wannabee golfers.

I just started golfing after literally not touching a club for something like 15 years, I must have been around 10 years old. I normally have an annoying wristy release. I modified your feel a bit, and it's feeling pretty nice. "Throw the club down the fairway, but keeping it below 2m height (as it flies through the air)." It seems to get the release to stop rising through the ball, or flipping through the ball (because you don't throw the club with your wrists, but your whole body).

Hey Clay, I hope you can shed light on this matter. I was playing a friendly but competitive golf game with my brother and he hit his ball down the fair and when we went to look for it we couldn't find it. So he hit a provisional and hit that ball out of bounds. He dropped another ball and hit that ball, so we start heading towards that golf ball and we come to find his original ball that we thought was lost. He starts playing that ball and doesn't want to count the other 2 strokes he played before finding his original lost ball. How would you rule this??
@tomvance85224 жыл бұрын
When he took the drop and hit it he was declaring the other ball lost. Nice that he found it, but it’s out of play. When he took the drop he would be hitting 6, if I kept the story straight.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, technically, once he played a new ball, that's the one he has to take. But in the spirit of what is right, I would have let him play his original ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

In some other videos on the site talking about the release you have used the term "thumbs down" as part of the full release post impact. It seems like when I feel like I'm getting the right thumb down at the 45 degrees post impact it always leads to pushing against the shaft before impact and leads to left forearm not rotating and left wrist starting to cup through impact and the left elbow starting to slightly bend through impact. It is more the force of the club that pulls the right thumb down as opposed to actively releasing the right thumb from the thumb up position? In other words, should I be trying to feel rotating the right forearm through impact with the right thumb still "up" but the force of the clubbed moving down and to the right of the body pulls the right thumb down?
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dwain, feel is completely relative so It's hard to say but it sounds to me like you're not rotating through impact. All the things your'e describing are from the hips stalling out and the arms racing in front.

I can't get this right after a month and a half of swinging. I don't trust the instructors around here to fix either... Just stuck. I have a trip planned to Bully Pulpit at Medora in July and I'm terrified lol.. Even when I do hit it what I feel is well, it hooks badly.
@glennwatson33134 жыл бұрын
When you describe the swing you show that you still have lag at impact (0:16) while compressing the ball. But in the slow motion video swing it appears at the moment of impact (3:35) you have completely straightened your wrist and there is no lag. Is this a 'feels' verses 'reals' thing? And if so is is possible to hold the lag for too long? Sorry for the long question.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
It's a little bit of a feel thing. The trail wrist is likely not going to be bent back in extension to the end range of your motion unless your wrists are just really unflexibile. They are going to be bent back some. I think you might be looking at a frame that's after impact too because I went back and looked just before the club touches the ball and Clay's wrist is bent back. Most amateurs are going to start having their trail wrist go into flexion (flipping) at impact. You absolutely can hold the lag too long but it's pretty rare. Lag doesn't do you any good unless you release it and that's what we talk about in the Straight-Line Release course on the website. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

So the greatest golfers in history say you can’t release to early and release from the top. Most instructors on the other hand say hold and release later??? So confusing !!
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
I know! The truth is that feeling is relative. That is what they felt like. Most amateurs will cast the club and release way too early if they have that feeling.

I have to respectfully disagree. Most people will hold onto the lag and not have a good release by chasing positions. You cannot teach the golf swing by teaching how to throw a ball down the fairway. The release points are very different. The best way to increase speed is to feel like you are throwing the club away from the ball from the top. It feels like you are casting, but if you have transferred your weight onto your forward leg just before completing your backswing, the shaft will be in a good position of just enough forward shaft lean for irons at impact. Watch Steve Pratt on YT or Mike Austin. That was a game changer for me.
