@Anatoly Antipin - It depends on what you mean as "snap their wrist" If you mean it as a basketball player snapping his wrist (wrist extension into wrist flexion), then no they don't at all. If you mean they snap their wrist back into wrist extension prior to contact and then allow the wrist to return to a neutral position, then yes they do. Which is exactly what I cover in this video!!!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
@@anatolyantipin373 That image shows his wrist going from full wrist extension into less wrist extension, when he makes contact his wrist is still laid back slightly, will depend on the grip (I cover this exact point at 1:40 in this video) He hasn't snapped his wrist from extension into flexion, has he? You said basketball players snap their wrist, they snap the wrist from extension into flexion. Tennis players don't do that! Open your eyes man

Hi Simon, I always appreciate how clear and detailed your lessons are. And no hype. Just good stuff. I've been struggling with a lot of mishits, and I believe it is due to previous videos from other channels talking about windshield wiper (or maybe I should say windscreen wiper?) and snapping and rolling over and brushing up and so on. Consequently, I've had too much movement in the forearm and wrist before contact. I've concluded (and I wonder if you would agree) that the only thing that should move before hitting the ball is the shoulder joint and not the forearm, wrist, or elbow. Of course, the torso and legs and the rest of the body move. The rotation of the racquet up to the ball and forward is done by the torso and legs and shoulder but nothing from the shoulder on down to the racquet. To move the elbow and forearm and wrist only makes for inconsistency and mishits. One can get away with it on slow, sitter balls but not balls with pace. Would you agree? The forearm rotates immediately after hitting the ball simply because the arm has to come around the body at that point. That "locked in position" created by the butt cap pointing at the ball does not change up to contact. If you look at the pros in this video, their forearms do not seem to rotate. When I look at their arms, I see no rotation in the forearms until contact. I see rotation right at contact and after. Rotating the forearm risks rotating the racquet around its axis, at least to a small degree. That would produce a great variance in the angle of the face of the racquet. I'm interested to know if you think my ideas are correct or if I'm off base. I do know that since I've "locked in" my arm up to contact my hitting has been so very much cleaner and more powerful. I don't think we need to squeeze out a little more power from our forearm. Thanks.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial10 ай бұрын
The role of the forearm is crucial prior to and during contact when going for topspin. On a flatter shot (which sounds like it suits your forehand more) you don’t need to pronate until after contact. For more extreme grips, like the western, the forearm has to turn over to allow the contact to occur. So it also depends on the grip you use, I’d guess you’re more eastern?
@nebraskanate741710 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply. I started out with an eastern and was told by my instructor in the 1970s to switch to continental (ha ha ha, those were the days), so I did and then went to eastern and then semi-western, then back to eastern, and for the past 6 months have been back to semi-western. I think the semi-western is better than the eastern for topspin. (Grip does matter.) If I consciously keep my forearm in the locked position, all the way to contact, it appears that I am getting just as much topspin as with a pronating forearm. And it sure looks to me that the pros (as seen in the videos) do not pronate until contact or just after contact. (Oh, I looked at the videos some more and I must concede that I do see some pronation right before contact on Federer's swing, the video from above and behind him that begins your video.) Anyway, I'll take your comments to heart and experiment out on the court. I appreciate your time to reply to my comments. Happy New Year. @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

I think the hard part is the loose and relaxed wrist and forearm before and after contact. It’s the key for the lag before and also the natural pronation after.

I like the video and actually tried in the past - letting your wrist 'lag' not really wanting to snap the ball through the forehand, then you'll have wrist injuries, you can actually fracture your wrist doing that if you are hitting against a good player. Having said that, the pro tips aren't for everyone - especially those with grandpa tennis skills who sway between continental for everything to forehand grip for everything, implementing or adopting pro tips needs dedication and attitude, if you want to somehow put the ball back in the court, you can put plenty of them. Also, pro tips take time to mature in your game before you could become fluent with it....its smart work and commitment. Simon, great video once again...I tried the tip of pointing the butthead to the ball until the last few seconds of hitting the ball to get a good lag and pop on the shot, one of the most difficult ones to master....

@nebraskanate741710 ай бұрын
I'm just a student of the game but the laid-back position seems to be a wrist fully "extended" and a forearm in the "supinated" position. If you are unfamiliar with the terms "extended" and "supinated," it is very helpful to Google them. Pointing the butt cap at the ball usually creates this laid-back position, but the point is not the butt cap pointing, but rather the laid-back position of the wrist and forearm. That same position should exist when you hit the ball. I get into that position by starting my back swing in that position and swinging the racquet head down and around to the back or by letting the racquet head swing back when I start my forward swing. I prefer rotating my racquet head down and into position. But I am not an instructor, just a bumbling and struggling player. But I will say that making this change in my form has helped me immensely. I can't say enough about it! Good luck.

Simon, why do we want the racket lag? Higher racket head speed or contact point in front of our body?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Racket lag creates leverage over the ball (leverage is basically force) like a hammer hitting a nail. You let the hammer head lag behind the handle and then snap, similar idea on the forehand. Let the racket head lag and then make contact. Extra power and control are the main reasons

Federer is in TOTALY different class...... best and the most complex forehand ever.... no one can not copy his motion patterns!

Federer's forehand is great but many every pro player creates lag on their forehand, some less than Federer but they all use it. Federer's flexibility and arm extension allows him to lag more than someone who uses the bent elbow and more extreme grip but that doesn't mean they don't use good lag still.
