Tennis Tactics - 5 Ways To Dominate In Singles
We all want to win more singles matches and dominate our opponents. When it comes to winning tennis matches, it's all about using the correct tennis tactics and strategy.
In this lesson, coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you 5 ways to dominate in singles.
Tennis Tactics - 5 Ways To Dominate In Singles:
1. Match preparation. By warming up properly, even if it's a small amount of time, 10-15 minutes, you'll give yourself a boost before the match. If time permits, you'll want to hit for a good 20-30 minutes and then have some off-court time to stretch out your body, eat a good meal, visualize how you want to play and then warm-up for the match.
2. Starting off the match with a high level of focus and consistency. Many players make the mistake of starting out at full speed on their shots, going for maximum power on the serve, hitting hard shots right from the first point, going for winners. Start off the match at 75% power, get your first four first serves in and build a rhythm. This might mean you start off with a serve between your first and second and get that consistency going right from the beginning. If you do this and build that timing, your body will naturally pick up the speed and within 2-3 service games, you'll have that solid base along with your power. In those first few games, you want to develop a solid base that you can build off during the match. This means playing high percentage tennis, hitting with good margins, constructing your points instead of trying to end them quickly. Testing out your opponent's game, finding out what they like and don't like.
3. Find your opponent's weakness. We all have weaknesses, it might be one particular stroke that breaks down under pressure or a certain type of ball that we hate dealing with. This could be a high backhand for the single handers out there. This could be dealing with a low ball on the forehand side, if the player uses a more extreme grip. The quicker you find the weakness, the easier it will be for you to win that match. This doesn't mean that you use the same tactic on each and every point. If your opponent struggles with high backhands and all you do is give them high backhands, they'll adapt and actually get better at dealing with them.
This means that on the bigger points, you use that tactic. 30 all points, breakpoints, game points, etc. How do you find the weakness? You test out everything from the start of the match, give them low balls on each side, give them high balls on each side, approach to their forehand and backhand, see how they deal with being rushed. Use every type of serve that you have in your arsenal. All this time, you should be taking mental notes, storing that data like a computer. You'll quickly piece together their game and find their weaknesses.
4. Try to play each point as if it's the only one. This means having that point by point mentality. That means letting go of errors, forgetting about the lead you may have lost, not being affected by your opponent's winners. Living in the moment and focusing only on the task at hand, which is the next point. A good way to do this is to build the next point in your mind before you go out and play it. This could be when you're collecting balls or when you go to your towel. That's why the pros all have towels on the court, you can use that time to recover, let the heart rate drop into the ideal zone and also build up the point in your mind. This would be the first and second shot on your serve, or the return and strategy when returning.
5. Fight. Never give up. Many tennis players seem to throw in the towel as soon as they lose the first set or they feel like it's not their day.
The great thing about the scoring system in tennis is, you're never out of a match even in the worst position. A few points can change the momentum of a match drastically. I've both won and lost matches from match point positions. It's never over until it's actually over. The more you show your opponent you are there to fight and won't give up, the more likely it is to affect them mentally and before long, that will have an effect on their performance.

That last point is absolute gold, even if it's the most obvious one. By being willing to fight for every point, you're playing mind games with the opponent. Goes hand in hand with having good cardiovascular endurance that doesn't let you down towards the business end of the match.

This is good advise, I know from own experience if I dont warm up before matches I always loose first set. But if I eat good food 3h before, then warm up 60min before and visualize 15 min before match my goals I play much consistent. You should also mention rituals during matches. Every good player uses their own rituals that makes them be more calm and don't stress out. Rituals and breathing properly during match is probably one of the important action to do.

The bulk of my problems at this point are getting over the mental hump and self belief in beating top players in my age group. I do reasonable well, I’m mentally suspect early in tournaments against the people I should progress against. When I get past those, I construct points well against top players, but almost get too excited when I get the ball to finish points. Not sure you can fix all this though 😂

Simon, your videos are amazing. I mean it. And this video is probably one of the best i have seen. Fantastic. Idea for another video (not sure it has been tackled before). It could be interesting to help us on how to have a better fitness level. Tennis is a rather unique sport when we have to be super fast but only for a short period of time. Like you mentioned in your video, it is good to have heart back to a lower rate. In other words, recovery is extremely important. I have an ok fitness level and managed to beat better players only because they were running out of steam before me. Long story short : I am sure you have more tips on how to be physically better prepared (I saw you skipping but I am sure there are other exercises that could be very useful for tennis players : HIIT-style). You also mentioned food in this video. This could be a good global video : how to be prepared outside of the court (exercises, what to eat before a match, during the match and even after) and have a good stretch. Not sure players will be interested but fitness level has a huge influence on the outcome of a match. Especially when it’s getting long. Thanks again Simon. Amazing quality. Super clear examples. I play better since I am watching your videos and more importantly : i am more confident 💪👍🏻

Hey mate, I really like your tutorials. You ask for alot of reccomendations, I think the youtube tennis community would love to see a collaboration match up with other tennis channels, like a versus tournament. A bit hard now, but would be cool to see in the future. Keep at it

Simon - what is a good ratio between practice play and match play? I know some players just like to hit - some like to only play matches. What is the correct balance?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
It depends a lot on when your next tournament is. When going through a training block, where tournaments are weeks or months off, you'll want to work more on technique, fixing issues in your game, building fitness and getting stronger etc You'll play practice sets but it might account for only 30% of your training. When you're competing a lot and getting ready for events, you'll want to increase the points you play, it might account for 60-70% of your training time. Federer is known to play 4-5 sets against different opponents in the final weeks of a training block, when the pros train at GS, the week before the event, they all play practice matches against as many other players as possible. You'll see them hit for 15-20 minutes and then play games for another hour or 1.5 hours. Rafa likes to hit for an hour and then spend an hour playing sets. Novak is similar.

I think the biggest issue (well for me personally) during singles is to run in necessary pace to return the balls. I grt tired very quickly and start losing the balls or even start tanking. I think your physical preparedness is very important too

How do you construct a point? I'm great at consistent passive play with giving them easy balls. I just get dictated in the point all the time. Maybe I should work on warming up too. I play point by point but can't muster any urgency or intensity. It's not like I give up, I don't know how to play with intent to win. My goal is to play not to lose and outlast them to capitalize on their balls that go out or into the net.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Awesome! Thanks for the response! I'll try to use that time in between points to visualize and think about the next point before I play it. I know you have some fitness videos already, but I think it would be cool to see some of your personal off court training sessions blog style. Like walking us through your gym session and explaining what works for you. I never know if I should be running more, strength training more, or even what the optimal combination of both are to be able to perform at the highest level when I play.
