That was all so awesome, I didn't want it to end. I live in East central Florida, and one of my all-time favorite lakes down here is Blue Cypress Lake. EXCELLENT top water fishing for trophy bass. I had been fishing there a lot, when I took a friend. On the way out, I told him several times NOT to instantly set the hook during top water strikes, but to count to 2. He didn't realize I was watching him, as he was slowly popping a large surface popper. All of a sudden, a HUGE bass struck his lure, and I'm not kidding, it was an extremely violent strike, looking & sounding like a small bomb going off. It actually scared the hell out of both of us. Of course, out of reflex, he set the hook instantly and lost that fish. I began laughing so hard, as he spun around, eyes as big as saucers, and said "Did you see THAT!!!"...........He never could get that fish to hit again, not even with a back up lure. To this day, that was the biggest & most violent top water strike I've ever witnessed. Aside from the explosion, that bass was so big, it displaced enough water to create a boil that was the size of a king sized mattress. I mean we were both shaking after it happened, and only about 30 feet from the boat. Back about 2002, the FWC went to Blue Cypress to do a fish count by shocking them up. Blue Cypress is a very difficult lake for shocking up fish, due to all the wood & heavy vegetation in the water, that soaks up most of the electricity. They still managed to shock up 400 bass over 3 days, ranging from 5 to 8 pounds, with some even larger. The biggest bass weighed 14 lbs. The lake record is 18 lbs. I've caught countless bass there, including several from 8 to 10 lbs. And I once lost a fish there, that dwarfed even the three 12 pounders I've caught at the neighboring lake called the Stick Marsh/Farm 13. I was using a large buzzbait, and was able to turn that fish twice, and got a good look at her as she swam right past my boat before spitting the hook. AAARGHH!!! I know that fish had to go at least 15 pounds anyway. I love your videos. Keep em coming!

A few days ago I felt I needed some inspiration... so watched this video. I was so pumped to throw topwater that I went out fishing later that day. First cast on a livetarget rat a giant inhaled my frog like something out of one of your videos. I landed it and it ended up being my personal best at 5.85 pounds! So I guess I partially owe it to you for helping me catching it. Thanks Bama Bass! P.S. by the way this is probably my favorite video on KZbin!

A note to new top water anglers, pay attention to when he sets the hook. The slight delay is intentional for 2 reasons, 1st is to reel in the small amount of slack in line if any and the 2nd is to ensure the fish closed its mouth and has a good hold of lure for hook set. Don't set the hook the instant you hear or see the blowup or you can pull it out of its mouth. Also if he misses the lure you still have a chance to work the lure because you didn't try to set the hook too early.
@ShmeeOakee9 жыл бұрын
what were you using in the heavy mats? it looked weedless but it had the body of a frog. Was it just a rage toad or something?
