+JayandOscarFishing Thanks mate, yeah epic hit, even more tomorrow! Get out and give the frogs a go while you still have some weed and lily cover, doesn't even matter if you catch or not when they hit like this. cheers bud

I caught one today on a Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. It was surprising as I was trying to catch Largemouth Bass. Great video.

Nice one Chris. Wish we had some of those largemouth over here they look like so much fun!

Some real nice takes you caught on film. I have noticed with the pike you can watch that tell tale V wake coming for the bait because they come hard and fast. Very exciting way to fish. It's hard to give that little pause before you strike. Have you ever tried a smaller frog for the chub? I would think they would eat them looking forward to part 3.
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+Huntnfishnuts Yeah they sometimes come at it even better than that. Had one earlier in the year that was a good fish of about 12lb and it made that big V for a good 20ft or more on the surface. Now that gets the heart going I tell ya. Not easy to tell yourself not to hit it either. No never tried the smaller frogs but I bet the chub would like them. I just haven't enough fishing time in the day I guess! lol

hi paul, very enjoyable video, many thanks, i wanted to ask you how many months of the year does the frog work, is it an april-sept lure or is it a shorter window than that? i used a frog for the first time on saturday past, my pal and me were on a loch in the scottish highlands and without any exaggerating we both had 50 plus hits EACH, we landed 4 each with my best one at 14lb, but the amount of aggressive takes and follows were amazing, i fished it slow and left it static and that seemed to trigger a hit, most takes would come in 3-4 ft of weedy water or right in close, it was just amazing sport and we lost a few decent fish as it was'nt all small jacks! any info you can give me on frogs as to how long a season is for them would be very much appreciated, many thanks

about 70% of the pike come of the hook again or are not properly hooked. I have tried everything. Any tips?
@riverpiker8 жыл бұрын
Are you using the surface frogs? Not the best for pike hook up ratios but great fun to fish with as the takes are scary and edge of the seat stuff. Have you seen this latest surface lure video? It might help you as it was made to deal with your question. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIKueYppgtypaqc&lc=z12cfhkbxtrygvwfp23byftwwzr1vp3rk04

Hi there, great videos. I have been using top water lures myself recently for predator fishing. Do you suggest a top fishing line to use for piking especially? Cheers in advance, keep up the great videos

What pound braid and leader would you recommend?
@riverpiker6 жыл бұрын
It's a tough one this mate. As the frogs are small, ideally you want to go light so you can cast them easily. But the problem is all that thick weed, lillies and so on. if the pike gets its head buried in the weed you need plenty of strength to get them out. Also the braid is not the best for abbrassion resistance, so having some tough thick braid is good. I'd say at least go with 30lb braid and trace but I know some lads who will use 50lb of both.

These look ideal for my local, extremely weedy at the moment, Dorset Stour! Are there any other suitable lures for such situations that you could recommend? Kudos on the channel by the way!
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+akaFonzie There's lots of weedless lures about. Some use a jig head and a thick nylon protector thatcovers the point. Stops most weed but when a fish bites the nylon moves and the hook point opens up. Another way is to use soft shads and an over size offset hook. The point of the hook sits inside the rubber with the curve of the hook out the bottom, as a fish bites on it pushes up the point. If you search weedless lures you'll find these two styles easily. Both are ok for some weed and you can fish through lilly pads etc. For the really thick weed like a matting, you eed to be on the surface with weedless lures like these frogs. If the weed is shallow and you have the top of the water clear of weed you can fish most top waters, from Heddon Mouse, jitterbugs to poppers. Glad you like the channel mate thanks for watching

+River Piker Thanks for the detailed response, I shall have a look at some of these, and you never know maybe one day i'll actually catch a pike using lures! Keep it up =]

+akaFonzie Ha ha, keep at it mate, one day it'll all just happen trust me. Pike can be very localised sometimes and so finding them is the hard part. Tight lines mate

Hi mate! first cast and bit birds nest. the same like I got but with popper and got small pike , but popper was sinking 😃

Nice one catching on the popper Didzi. Think it might have sprung a leak though! lol Birds nest give you something to do while the fish aren't biting anyway bud!

Hi! That my popper has some weight in . So I think it sinking when not retrieve.

The hookup ratio is about four times better with a Heddon Moss Boss than it is with a frog - and they're just as weedless.
@riverpiker6 жыл бұрын
Yeah matey there's so many more surface lures out there and plenty better at hooking up. We had a bit of a craze for surface frogs over recent years but i need to do a few videos on the many other options out there, cheers for the reminder.

but that was twenty pound! ;) ha ha. Yeah they do, pretty spectacular these pike. You can see how tough it was to film on my own so there's some hits I just missed off camera which was a shame but I did manage to get a load more hits in the end. Monday is going to be great!

+PulzeGaming We're out tomorrow, same place I had the big girl from last week. Rained here today but not so bad tomorrow, hope the river isn't effected too much. Good luck if you get out mate, let me know how it goes.

Cut one side of legs little bit...it will have more natural movement,also use SG blood49 wire (make a knot) other wires will make your lure sink
@Diddy2918 жыл бұрын
I got braided line of 50 pounds about and wire trace. in combo it wants sink lures. And all my lures are bit expensive so safe stuff. And I have deeper smart fish finder about 100 gr and that cost 250 € I don't want to chance to loose that stuff
@riverpiker8 жыл бұрын
No you need to use strong gear, don't want to lose lures or the deeper!

All lures I cast with new rod up to 85gr and one of beach rod plus have trolling rod up to 300gr cast weight and other two are less then 50gr I think. I am out in Sweden Now so I can't check ☑ correct cw

+Fiske Dags Never had anything massive on the frogs but to be honest I don't do it enough. I think the biggest would be nearly 6kilo. Best off the surface though is 12kilo.
