Yeah, no one wants to get caught up in the civil war of another nation as a diplomat. Partly because you need to let those wars play out until one side has shattered the other and to the victor go the spoils, or you need to let the two sides figure out on their own that they are both destroying themselves and hammer out their own peace deal. Brokered peace deals on civil wars almost always fail within a generation as core issues and hatreds were likely never properly settled.

So many commentors trash Gowron's demise on DS9. As if it was a betrayal to the character. What betrayal? Picard & Worf basically supported Gowron as "the lesser of 2 evils". Because the alternative was the Duras family. It wasn't because Gowron actually stood for anything. Gowron was an opportunist (and a guilty pleasure to watch) and demonstrated he was a politician from the outset... resulting in Gowron basically trying to ignore Picard's hails for 3 days before sending a stooge (played by Erick Avari) to basically blow off Picard. This resulting in Picard demonstrating what political blackmail over subspace looked like... to get the cloaked vessel for the mission to Romulus in Ambassador Spock's 2-parter. Gowron put Kurn on the Council, then kicked him off when Worf didn't join him in the Cardassian invasion. That's what Gowron was... petty, impulsive... Like when Dax introduced Kor, the Dahar Master to Worf... "...any enemy of Gowron... is a friend of mine." Worf, Kor, Martok... they acted with convictions. They wrestled with their conscience. Gowron was ego & rage personified. Total scene stealer. Fun to watch... but at some point... wasn't going to last.

Its hilarious that this kid even had a shot at the big chair. I doubt he would have been able to beat Gowron in a game of Checkers, let alone fight for the throne. Where the hell did he get that kind of confidence anyway? If the high council wanted the Duras Sisters to run the empire so badly, they should have just cut the middleman and allowed them to challenge Gowron directly for the big metal jacket.

Toral was being manipulated (behind the scenes) by Lursa and B'etor to become the Chancellor. His confidence came from reinforcements from them that he would one day hold the position of Chancellor. He was somewhat naive as he did not realize that while he would sit on the Throne, Lursa and B'etor would be the ones telling him what to do.

​@victorpradha9946 I thought DS9 let Gowron progress to his inevitable end.... Worf paved his way to power... so it was basically his responsibility to correct the problem. Gowron was an outsider from a minor House... sold to us as the "lesser of two evils" compared to the Duras family. But Gowron being less corrupt than the Duras family probably means still corrupt. Gowron was already dismissive of Picard when Picard needed a cloaked ship to get to Romulus... resulting in Picard demonstrating what political arm-twisting over subspace looks like. [It's on KZbin] Gowron elevated Kurn after defeating the Duras Sisters... then destroyed him to retaliate for Worf not backing the Klingon invasion of Cardassia. DS9 basically just let Gowron evolve into the political monster we enjoyed watching... but, deep down... needed to be retired from the Chancellorship.

Klingon "Honor" is a joke. Worf is the only one who really holds to it. Their government is a corrupt mess, their houses constantly plot and scheme against each other, and their military runs around in cloaked ships waiting to strike from hiding. As Worf said in DS9 "There is nothing more honorable then victory". It sums the Klingons up pretty well, they make a lot of noise about their "honor", but if something dishonorable will help them win they'll do it.

He was a better choice for leadership than the House of Duras but that's not saying much. He is willing to execute a *child* until Worf specifically asks him not to. The idea of Gowron coming to power and turning into a vicious, jealous nutter who is willing to sacrifice countless Klingon lives in pointless attacks to humiliate a potential rival to his power well... power corrupts, especially in somewhere like the Klingon Empire where getting thrown out of power usually results in your death.

I actually think he would have been an interesting character if he were not allied with warf, or the Duras family directly. Like in that he is a young Klingon man seeking to live as a Klingon should, even though his ancestory was that of a family of cowards an traitors, but he was actually trying to bring back honor to his family. THe idea of a honorable Duras that both worked against Warf out of a sense of family honor for what he did to his family, but still had a certain amount of respect for him in how things happened to his family, while also being a semi-ally when dealing with trying to retake his family from his aunts/sisters so he could try and take leadership. That would have been quite interesting I mean I could see Warf even understanding him in that even though the Duras are cowards, an traitors, they are still Toral's family an that is always something to be honored. The idea of Toral attempting bring back honor, or atleast turn his family into a honor respecting family also could be something Warf could respect even if he hates the Duras for what they did to his family.

Yeah, it is kind of odd. My guess is it is just too time-consuming or costly to go pure spoken Klingon in the scene and subtitle it. Sometimes too it could be some of the studio's suits that don't like cluttering a TV show with subtitles as they are of the attitude that no one watching a syndicated TV program wants to read the screen like they were at an art house theater showing avant-garde foreign films.

This scene is the genesis of the civil war that rages in the Klingon Empire. The implications are significant as in the DS9 timeline, the Dominion are making their foray into the Alpha Quadrant. Between the Klingon civil war, then Klingon-Cardassian war, and then conflict with the Federation...and then of course the heavy toll of the war with the Dominion, the Klingons are were in no position to reassert their empire. The only real powers left were the Federation and the Romulans. It's a pity Gowron went batty toward the end of the war with the Dominion.

IF I remember the story right, La Forge proves this child to be a clone of Duras instead of being his child. I don't remember if it is in this episode or in the brief civil war where it is revealed. One thing I enjoyed about the civil war episodes is where Data breaks the network only to reveal the Romulan warbird trying to cross the net.

He was about to be made the Klingon Chancellor (leader of the Klingon Empire,) when those two ladies showed up with their nephew. Those women, L Ursa and B 'etor, are the sisters of Duras, who challenged Gowron for the Chancellorship. Duras was killed in an earlier episode. The boy is Toral, Duras' illegitimate son. This incident starts the Klingon Civil War, which also involves Worf from the Enterprise.
