What I really liked: In your blacksmithing videos, you often go do some gardening or other household task while a piece of steel is cooling. In this video, you went and did some blacksmithing while you waited for the concrete to harden. Classy move!

I love how you include all of the construction sounds in your audio instead of covering them up with music or even just muting them. This gives the videos such a simplistic feel that really helps me relax in today's busy natured society. Whole hearted support from me!😁. PS. Also your accuracy when hammering nails amazes me, I guess that is what being an amazing blacksmith will do.

That insulation appears to be much nicer to work with than most I have seen here in the United States; perhaps the most common for similar applications here is fiberglass backed with paper - nasty, itchy stuff. Your workshop looks warmer already. I am very glad you are beginning to trust your voice on the videos. Your English is excellent and you have a very nice voice.

My basement shop window was situated about the same height as yours. My carpenter bench below. Had I my druthers, I'd like a large window coming right down to just above bench level, maybe 6-7". The light. The transom windows openable. My bench was against a wall, but now believe it should have walking clearance all around it given the space. Nice work.

Hi Torbjörn. I'm tremendously impressed by this series. Here in the central US I'm about 37 degrees north latitude, you are probably 25 degrees further north. You really know how to make a structure tight. My blacksmith shop is currently uninsulated. Maybe you will inspire me! I'm writing this after you have posted the entire series. I was looking to see what your insulation was, and I see it is rock wool. I will investigate this. Thank you so much for including us and posting this series!

I’m confused by the holes covered with screen tot eh outside? I appreciate the need for the screen because of the holes, but why drill the holes? Ventilation? I would thing this is not necessary, it actually creates an avenue for moisture to enter? Loving this build so far, I was impressed with your hatchet use, especially when you cut the stripping to match the contour of the ceiling. Impressive! Thanks for sharing this, Dave.
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need ventilation behind the wall siding and the insulation. Moisture in the siding needs a way to ventilate. That's why I create the gap behind the insulation. Since this was originally build without that in mind I have to provide for air flow somehow. The mesh is to prevent bugs and mice to enter...

Tnx for sharing, coming along nicely ... pretty cool hatched use there, guess if it works it works, and may not be so weird for where an axe is as common as where you are. Mostly interested in what the spaced horizontal beams, on the inside of the insulation, are for; or is that just to hold things in place? guess i will find out in part 3 ... ohw, and wanted to also mention that you may also want to consider insulating the door :) (cover with 3mm ply wood to reduce weight and thus stress on hinges, a good use for it afterwards is blackboard paint and some chalk makes for a great surface for plans and list of reminders). Pretty sure that once all insulation is in place, it's already a much more comfortable space to be in.
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The horizontals is for another layer of insulation and for fastening the plywood I plan to screw onto the walls. Good tips for the doors, but I'm replacing them altogether. A bit reluctant about that but there is really no good way of making them good enough.
@dutchcourage7312
@dutchcourage7312 6 жыл бұрын
Another layer? well i guess it's colder up there than here in the Netherlands. Though i do wonder about not having a reflective side on the stuff you put up, so maybe that's on this 2nd layer? ... replacing them? hmm are they broken? i mean it's hard to see the state of them on screen here, so i guess if they are falling apart it's inevitable, but they looked sturdy enough and with more than enough room to put insulation, maybe with say a space blanket on the backside of the 3mm plywood to reflect the heat... then again, don't know which cold they need to hold out. Though do keep in mind you are building a woodworking shop, not a sauna ;) ... Still though, hard for me to judge, so i'll take your word for it :) Maybe do a close up when you get to replacing them to highlight the issue, or do so earlier, maybe people have good ideas to fix it and save you time ... the painting with chalkboard paint might still be an idea for the new doors, i thought about storage, but i personally dislike that on doors, they move (sometimes slam) so stuff tends to fall off ... lastly, tnx for taking some time to respond, it's really appreciated :)
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I will have 10cm of insulation in total... not much compared to a real house here where you often put in 20-30cm. The doors are not broken, but to make them air proof and seal well to the frame + insulate ... a big job that probably never will get close to 100%. Another thing is I like to add windows to the doors as well.
@dutchcourage7312
@dutchcourage7312 6 жыл бұрын
Woa 20-30cm :o , we go with 7-10cm by the looks of it, with a reflective side though (as far as i can tell) ... ok i see, fair enough, though doing them all over isn't a small project either ;) ... obviously do what you feel works for you. As i find it all interesting to watch and learn from :)

Hey, regardless if the panels have paper on them the seams should be taped. The rule is simple: inside more dense than outside. As shown you risk having a wet insulation, it's a shack but nonetheless...

I'm not done yet... There will be another layer plus a vapor barrier.

Is your planned vapor barrier to be reflective insulation? Because is not, I highly recommend considering it.

No, I don't think we use that kind here.

Odd. It is available in Hungary where I live. See no reason why it would not be available in Sweden. It is also commonly called "reflective insulation", and comes in different types. But when using the correct type for the application, and properly taped, it can be a vapor barrier. I checked, and it is available in Sweden. One product is called by the trade name PolyNum (TM). But I am sure there are others. Anyway.... I have used it. It really does help keep the IR heat in. I used 25 cm insulation plus reflective and glad I added the reflective. It does help.
