To be fair, the mother promised that she WOULD come to visit him again, and we don't necessarily know that she'll break that promise. She just decided she would rather have lived in ignorance, with hope that her son could come back one day, than knowing for sure that he never will.

That moment when you're not sure if this is a genuine problem, an April Fool's joke, or an inside joke from the episode about missing people.

I have more sympathy for the mother here. She has exhausted herself physically and emotionally looking for her son and what she finds is a tortured shell of a human being, that she is powerless to help. Everything she did, from obsessively looking for Jonah, to demanding the truth, to being broken by what she found, was completely human in my view.

Love this episode, one of Chris Chibnall's best scripts and it was what inspired the direction taken for Series 3 of the show as well. Bit more sympathetic towards the mother. Her son suffered a fate worse than death essentially, and in so many ways she's lost him. But equally he's still in there, as she saw for herself. That must be like emotional torture. She's way beyond grieving. She never gave up hope, and yet cruelly it was actually finding him that crushed all her hopes. All those months spent with a binary vision of 'is he alive or is he dead', only to face an outcome essentially worse than either. And to make it even worse, there's nowhere and nobody to properly vent the anger and the grief of this at. She's a single parent with nobody to look after her. Her close bond with her kid is now damaged beyond repair. And there's no villain behind all of this, no one to take it out on. It's just pure, unfair tragedy, and because of that I think her response whilst irrational, is also entirely fair enough.

I've always loved this episode. Torchwood is great at being silly, so it's so nice to see a serious ep. Plus, it holds a special place in my heart as I can see Flat Holm (the little island it is filmed on) from where I live - always makes me smile when I see it!

His mother keeps going to see him but she's suffering now too. Before, even though she was suffering she had hope. She no longer has any hope. She's asking Gwen not to take away the hope of the other people. But she's still going to go see him during his 4 down hours. Can't go when he's screaming. The sound wave is too strong.

I think Jonah has really been living all this time on another world, north of a huge wall in a keep with all his daughters. This was why his mum was horrified and wants nothing to do with him.

Perhaps if a quest goes on for long enough, people forget the reason for the quest and it becomes an end in itself. Even if they find what they're looking for, if it doesn't match their expectations they'll reject it because it no longer fits the pattern they've created. For the mother, suddenly confronted with the reality rather than her idealised mental picture...

This is one of my favorites of the show!!! I feel like it’s a mystery done right presents a question that sticks with you for a while. Which for me, is peak who/torchwood. That ending is absolutely brilliant. I think y’all are a little too critical of the mom but she’s definitely not exempt from her being a bad person. 10/10 episode… we don’t get a lot of those in torchwood.
@zemoxian5 жыл бұрын
Finding her son was the day her hope died. Finding something beyond her imagination in the place of the child she lost. Finding out he wasn’t dead but was pretty much in Hell the whole time makes her reaction pretty believable. But at least knows now and has the opportunity to come to terms with her new reality over time. And, if she chooses, she can be there.

I voted for it on the big community poll from a while back, but I don't have patreon to vote on those patron polls.
