Kate Bush is only five years older than Tori Amos is. Tori is a musical prodigy who played piano at 2-1/2, and she is the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music at age five. She studied music formally throughout her young life and began playing professionally in bars and hotels at age 12. Her primary non-classical influences are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Joni Mitchell and other musicians from the early-mid 1970s. She and Kate share a lot of superficial similarities, but their music is actually very different if you really listen to it. I think the two of them may have some similarities just because they are of the same generation and were exposed to similar musical influences. Tori has said she admires Kate's music a lot for its beauty and its strength, but Kate really was not a presence during her formative years and it's awkward for her to have to explain this all the time because people interpret it to be a denial of an obvious influence, which she really just wasn't much of an influence on Tori's music.

I think this song is her masterpiece. Her harmonies w/ her piano. Her voice and the piano harmonies keep making major chords. The girl is brilliant.

Oh yeah, the clash on '...ning' at the start of the chorus where she drops onto a major with the piano still in the minor. Just delicious. The real genius of this song I think is that it's one of her most accessible, musically, but is not at all diminished in quality or creativity for being accessible. Absolutely a masterpiece.

Tori's style was developed in the conservatory (ages 5-12), gay bars, & D.C. hotels. Her music influences came from her mother, who worked in a record store prior to getting married, & her older siblings who sneaked Led Zepplin & Steely Dan records into the house. One of my favorite covers that she's done is Do It Again. It's so fucking badass.

Her father was a minister in Potomac, Md. A number of her songs, like Father Lucifer and Mrs. Jesus were kind of off-handed jabs at her father. I dated a girl who sang madrigals with her in the choir. Unlike Tori, she just remained in the D.C. music scene.

Thanks for playing tori. A cornflakes Girl is a mean girl. She had haters in school because she's so unique. One of the girls fighting has red hair. Representing tori. At the end she's telling herself to drive away from them. Thus, where'd you put the keys girl She was the youngest person to ever get a full scholarship to peabody. AT 5 YEARS OLD I've actually never listened to Kate Bush. That I know of

So interesting to discover tori later in life - i got hooked on fiona apple and listened to her for the last year and found my way to tori a few weeks ago. I definetly hear kate bush in her upper register. I can confidently say shes the best live musician/ piano player ive ever seen - her on her piano is just fucking incredible to watch and her melodies physically make you move. However i dont connect with her lyrically the way i did fiona tbh- but her music is just so moving!

Sweet! Takes me back to 1994. I'm hearing a touch of Annie Lennox in the later sections. The backing harmonies in the lower range have a cadence reminiscent of "Missionary Man" by the The Eurythmics.

You are right about the “duel” comparison in this song - cornflake versus raisin. Listen closely and you hear the old western whistling “duel” theme - kind of like “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly”

I would have always grouped Tori Amos with Kate Bush in terms of their unique styles, and lack of conformity. But its hard to believe there is only a 5 year age difference between them!! That might come from the fact that Tori Amos had her breakout success at 27, while Kate Bsuh was only 19/20. Regardless I'm a huge fan of both. Tori's piano playing in particular is amazing. Although she sounds totally different to Tori and Kate, I'd put Bjork in a similar bracket, or child prodigy to idiosyncratic solo star.

From wiki: “The inspiration for "Cornflake Girl" came from a conversation Tori Amos was having with a longtime friend about female genital mutilation in Africa, specifically how a close female family member would betray the victim by performing the procedure. Amos has said that growing up, the name they gave to girls who would hurt you despite close friendship was cornflake girls.[1] The reference to corn flakes and raisins comes from their distribution in a box of breakfast cereal, implying that "raisin girls" are much harder to find than "cornflake girls". “

That song you were thinking of, perhaps "Crucify" or maybe "Winter"? She also did a great, but VERY different cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I don't think she ever got that much airplay, certainly on LA stations. Maybe KROQ when it was great or 92X out of San Diego. 91X didn't seem to give two shits about the FCC in the early 90's. But all three of those songs got quite a bit of time on MTV and VH1.

Raisins are natural, cornflakes are an artificial variety of a natural product. So the girl hasn't been socially conditioned or programmed, she is a free spirit.

I think the message about the foods is that cornflakes are kind of plain and predictable. A cornflake girl is a common person who doesn’t stand out in the choir. Raisins are unique additions to the cereal bowl… there’s not many of them, but they stand out and definitely make themselves noticed. Look closely at a raisin and it’s dark and complex and uniquely shaped.

This song has one of her best piano solos but if anyone says they can figure what this song was supposed to be about without looking it up they are lying. This is off her second album and this when she started to lose me. Her lyrics became so abstract with so many references only she knows, I couldn't appreciate them anymore. This is coming from someone who loves "Little Earthquakes" and saw her in concert the year it came out. P.S., I had a crush on her too.

Kate Bush and Tori Amos started playing professionally around the same time. Bush in 78, Amos in 79. Tori Amos writes all of her own songs, and she is a classically trained musician, who originally started by playing metal.

It was an original and the cornflakes are the boring stuff and the raisins girls are the more interesting ones. I think I prefer her live recordings above her studio recordings. She puts so much passion into her live singing and playing. The piano to her seems to be an extension of her emotions. Strangely enough, I feel that her a capella performance of ‘Me and a gun’ shows her at her most intense: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYjbi4por89qhrM

You are right!!!! Saturn in Aquarius for those born in 1963,. They are highly individualistic and does not follow the crowd. She was born in Dhanishtha the 1st pada (quarter) . Her sense of rhythm never eclipses her soul feeling of her mudic. 1st quarter is ruled by the Sun and Dhanishtha is rhythm. So the piano comes out beautiful.

I was a total 12 year old Tori fanatic on the 90s and had no idea who Kate bush was. When I met my gen x husband he immediately schooled me on how Tori was so derivative of Kate Bush. I can't say he or you are wrong in your analysis. Tori fans don't get it twisted with "she studied in the conservatory" like she didn't have ears or lived in the world.

She has never talked about Kate being one of her influences, when she's been so open about the others (like Joni Mitchell). So I think it is more likely that it was a case of parallel evolution of their sound. I think it is sad that two brilliant artists get pitted against each other, when they are both geniuses and masters of their craft.
