The guy the did the drums on the album is the same guy that did the drums on Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn...".

Love this album! The next album is To Venus And Back which is almost like a sequel to this album. Both albums are fantastic

I know you were only planning to do her first 4 albums, but considering the sounds you liked here (Cruel, iieee) it may be worth checking out her next - To Venus and Back. Probably even more electronic.

this album is the clearest example of her incredible voice, her vocal stylism and versatility is unmatched. And it´s so beautiful also...

Yes! I i e e e might just be my favorite Tori song... I feel it as this trippy journey with dark spirits in the wake of a personal tragedy. Incredible.

I’ve really enjoyed your reactions to the Tori albums. I’d suggest also doing “To Venus and Back,” (the studio album portion at least, if not the live second half) and “Scarlet’s Walk.” I’ve always considered these first 6 albums as two trilogies. Little Earthquakes builds up to Under The Pink, and everything she learned while making those 2 albums culminates with the 18 track Boys For Pele. From The Choirgirl Hotel starts a new phase, builds into To Venus and Back, and again, she took everything that worked from those albums, trimmed back some of the electronics and again completes the cycle with an 18 track magnum opus. Those 6 are THE essential Tori. Everything after had been hit or miss, but last year’s Ocean To Ocean is probably the best since Scarlet’s Walk.

I believe some of the instrumentation you can't figure out such as accordion/sax in Playboy Mommy or strings in Iieee is actually Tori first fully experimenting with keyboard/synth. 💙

This album is about a miscarriage Tori had, especially Spark, Cruel, and Playboy Mommy. This has to be one of my favorite Tori albums because she is so experimental. Can't wait until you get to To Venus and Back and Scarlet's Walk.

Yay! Thanks for reacting to this. I know you said this might be your last, but To Venus and Back is a continuation of the full band/electronic/dark tori. :)

Tori Amos has a lot of hidden gems amongst her many albums. One of her songs went to #1 in the UK, something she surprisingly has never done in the USA (although her albums have). Of course, "units sold" isn't an indicator of musical talent, but it's worth noting. I've always loved her song Caught a Light Sneeze, but my favorite album of hers is Little Earthquakes (which is probably the most accessible one, too).

Scarlet’s Walk, To Venus and Back, Unrepentant Geraldines and American Doll Posse are my favorites. Please react to those albums too.

First off I love your in depth reviews. You obviously know your stuff. I’m just surprised you didn’t delve into the games she plays with time signature… especially in songs like hotel. For me it really propels the track and gives it a very restless and driving feeling.

cool to know you dwelved into watching tori live performances . her interviews are quite something too . personally her ' boys for pele ' doc/presentation is the best , you really get into who tori has an artist is . also , have you considered reacting to some videos / live performances of music artists ?

Oh yes my body is ready! This was the first Tori record I bought, in 2000 I was 14. I had heard about her from fans of Kate Bush (they thought of Tori as a copycat, which is only superficially true, they play piano, write and produce their own stuff and can hit high notes, but thats where it ends). I bought the record because I liked the artwork (She was laying on a huge ass scanner, thats why it looks so weird). Its such a dark album, no? Also 1997/1998 is the time where the alt ladies went electro, Choirgirl, but also Pj Harvey's Is This Desire? and Kylie's Impossible Princess and lets not forget Ray of Light by Madonna. Btw its obvious that you weren't around in the 90s, complaining about the harsh kick drum in Raspberry :P. I love how unrelenting it is. I think for that track she was inspired after the club remix for Professional Widow was a no.1 in the UK.

OMG. If you like Cruel you must hear the live version of it - the best is on the Disc 2 on the album To Venus and back. It's slightly different from the album version and so powerful that I have goosebumps anytime I hear it (and I heard it for like milion times...)

This album is where my love for Tori Amos began. I tired them, but her previous works don't engage me. I have tried, trust me, but BfP is still rubbish to me. Tori has a few hit-and-miss albums on this ride, but finally return to form with her current one. I'm interested to see and hear your reactions to her albums that I consider "forgettable" and "throwaway". I won't write their names but just want to watch how you feel about them as you go.

While I do love this album, am with you on being alone in disliking what most fans love, and for me that's BfL, which is mostly either forgettable or rubbish. I have delved and re-delved into that album, trying to hear what so many do, and I just don't hear it. Maybe later it will come to me or not. For me, O2O is her return to form since "American Doll Posse". While I love NoH, I prefer Tori and her band. Tori's fans mostly seem to think that her albums WILL draw you in at some point in your life. Maybe that's true, but I don't think it's that deep. Not every piece of music from any artist who's been doing it so long as Tori will be thought great be it present or future.
