Im so ready to see your Tori journey. I was a huge fan of hers in the early 00's but she kind of lost me until her most recent album from last year. Her discography is a bumpy ride but a fun one! A really talented artist.

One thing to know about Tori Amos is that she has a form of synethesia that causes her to perceive sounds/music as lights/images. So with every song she's literally painting a picture for the listeners.

For some background on Tori… Tori was a child prodigy on the piano, playing by ear by age 2 1/2. She was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory at 5, as the youngest student ever accepted there. The plan was for her to become a concert pianist. But she developed an interest in rock music, and was thrown out by 11 for “musical insubordination”. She started playing in bars at 13, and later moved to LA to start her career. She spent 10 years playing piano bars while trying to get an signed to a label. Everyone told her that the “girl with a piano”-thing was never going to work, so she eventually started a 80’s pop/rock band called “Y Kant Tori Read”. They got signed and released an album in 1988. It was a huge flop and the Rolling Stone Magazine called Tori a “bimbo”. She was devastated, but it was that experience that led to her writing the songs that would eventually make up “Little Earthquakes”. The whole point of Little Earthquakes was to center the piano, and to write from a personal perspective, to not try to be the “rock chick” that she had tried to be on the “Y Kant Tori Read” album. So that’s the reason why there are so few guitars on the album. The studio had no idea what to do with the album (they suggested pulling out the piano and replacing it with guitars, but Tori threatened to burn the tapes if they tried), so they sent her to London because they thought the Brits would be more open to her music than the Americans. They were right and the album was a success. The reason parts of the album doesn’t sound as good as the best recorded tracks is that Tori and her producer (and boyfriend at the time) Eric Rosse had very little money to spend on recording. Much of it was recorded on a home studio set up in a closet in their apartment. After handing in the first demos to the studio, they got a little bit of money to record a couple of songs in a real studio, so that’s why some of the songs sound better than others. Going forward, Tori’s albums are among the best sounding in the business.

Thank you for the in depth comment into Tori Amos, these really help me 😅 But i think they did pretty well with the recording with not really that much money!

For me, Tori is at her best when seen live. She has a way of singing and playing directly into your soul -- or maybe she lets you into hers. The albums are fine but don't do the same thing for me. When asked if she is a pianist or a or singer first, Tori responds that she is a composer first. A few musicians and composer reactors have reacted to her live performances very favorably. When performing live Tori goes all in, and find it intersting because while she considers herself a composer first her live performances have a real improvisational quality about them.

I‘ll look into some live shows, I unerstand if an artsist works better listening live… but I am just kinda the album-listener-guy haha :D

@@luggareviews I think music is subjective in general, but especially with some artists, and I think appreciation of Tori falls into the extreme tails. She has a very devout following, but many see her as a poor womans Kate Bush. I am in the former category. I really shouldn't like her. I'm a Jazz guy, real jazz--Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Elington...I like prog rock, some classic rock, some metal, Frank Zappa, some singer song writers, but I'm not much for pop music in general. But Tori's live performances put me in some kind of spell trance :)

“slamming on the piano like a butcher” 🤣🤣 That’s a pretty apt description of Tori’s style at times, but I love it. She’s my favorite artist from the ‘90s, and I thought about requesting a reaction of her through Ko-fi, but I didn’t think you’d be into her style. I enjoyed this reaction, and I'm excited about what you'll eventually have to say about Boys for Pele.

I have known about Tori Amos for like twenty five years, and I love music but I never really dug into her music that deep. I have gravitated towards a lot of Fiona Apple in that time (maybe instead). This is great stuff, I should check her out.

Silent all these years is on a whole not her level. I'm coming out of a 30 year marriage to a narcissist who never shut up about how I was never good enough for him. It has been my rock whenever I soften towards him. Never going back to being silent.

I've only heard Tori Amos' bigger singles. This album seems very much like a Kate Bush thing. Sort of. Kate is great though. If you haven't heard The Ninth Wave side of her Hounds of Love LP then you are missing something incredible.

I like her first three albums, but lost interest later. Bob's Burgers did a brilliant parody of her. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ7canaKo5urg9U

I have mixed feelings about that parody. Its funny but it also misrepresents her in the same way as the press did in the 90s. But I agree that her discography is patchy.
