It happens to also be the location of the infamous ' Tate ' murders by the Manson clan ( Charles Manson ) 1969 ... I learned that this week . Darkly fitting given the interpersonal lyrics ... which is why she asked Trent to do vocals I read ... A man with rage that also had a soft side .

The mission is a reference to a place, like where a missionary's base residence is located. Overall, this song seems to be about Mary Magdalene and Jesus.

Yes, this song is Tori's 'The da Vinci Code' long before that book was published; it's about the fabled romance between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, or at least it touches on that heavily. It's influenced by the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail and by the Gnostic Gospel of Mary Magdalene, which seems to have had a profound effect on her life.

What I love about Tori is how interpretive her songs and videos are. Really, and I believe she would agree, no one is truly 'wrong' in their interpretation. They may not guess the true meaning behind her songs, but Tori knows that people will see different things in her words based off of their own unique life experiences and she encourages that. I've heard her say that she is sometimes vague on the meanings because she does not want to impose her ideas of what a song means on others.

i interpret tori and the women laying down and letting the priest pass through them as a metaphor for her letting go and allowing the trauma of what happened to her to move on, instead of wasting her time, energy, and mental health mulling it over (thus reliving it) endlessly and blaming god/the universe/whatever for something she can't change regardless.

Okay here is what I interpret this to be. Notice it is "only women" that follow her and the two young girls (which I think are her "younger selves". and more and more women "join her. But then the '"Head priest" stares her down, he seems to have great power' and notice, I believe it is "only the women that "Laid down" for him to "walk over or around"...to me that is one huge metaphor message about "men and their "so called power' over women, along with some religion mixed into it, as Tori was brought up in a very strict religious upbringing, which a lot of her songs are about her "finding her own way" and being "Free"..

@@SaeedReacts. You're welcome. I have all of Tori's body of work, so I've learned how interesting and unique she is in her lyrics. She uses a lot of metaphors n them.. Her music got me through my divorce many years ago..

This album actually had several videos! Pretty Good Year, two versions of Cornflake Girl (a US version and a UK version), Past the Mission and God.

"'Past the Mission' is about a girl who refuses to be a victim anymore," Tori Amos explained in a 1994 issue of the fan magazine Really Deep Thoughts. "But she has to face a lot of thought patterns to do that. I wrote this when I was reading the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail. It talks about different theories on Christ. It talks a lot about Mary Magdalene. It's an underlying theme about how the church, the mission, has suppressed all this truth down through the years - the Goddess energy. They refer to Mary Magdalene as the Black Madonna. She had this cult following in France. They believe that she came to the shores pregnant. When they say the Holy Grail, they mean the Holy Blood, the Blood Royal in her body, Jesus' baby. And some scholars believe this. The other parts don't necessarily ring right, but there have been these secret societies. That's what I'm talking about also in 'Space Dog.' There are loads of secret societies, this is only one of them."
