I disagree. I've seen many Tori Amos concerts from the beginning of her solo career playing at very small venues. For me, her earliest performances were more personalized and poetically emotional journeys. It was mostly just her on piano, with some a cappella thrown in (Most famously for "Me and a Gun"). As her venues grew, so did the size of her backing band. As she was emotionally healing herself through her music, she had less raw emotional pain to draw from in her concerts. Couple that with a larger band and larger venues and we had less of a personal experience with Tori. I feel her albums reflect this as well. Her first solo album "Little Earthquakes" is an absolute masterpiece with every song. She did some real soul searching on that album that she hasn't equaled since.

You missed the point. She LOVES her father and the whole song is a retrospective of her relation with her father, the guidance and advise, her decisions about her path and the need to have the same protective presence in her life even when she has "grey hair" and "all the white horses have gone ahead". The magic phrase here is "when you gonna love YOU as much as I do" as a token of a father's love for his growing daughter.

You are right it is pretty much her singing poetry because pretty much any thing she writes is a form of lyrical poetry . She writes so much that she wants to be subjective and have people interpret it how they need for themselves . Yet so much of her work is pointed and specific . Performances like ME AND A GUN there is no misinterpreting her message . She is one of the most powerful writers to have emerged in modern music . Can’t wait to hear your other reactions to her !

I saw her live 5 times. First time was in 91 during that tour. I sat about 7-10 feet in front of her in a small theater on the UCSB campus. And this is exactly what it was like. It changed my life. I know this sounds lame, but she looked straight into my eyes several times as she sang. Absolutely amazing.

Tori was the youngest person ever accepted into John Hopkins at the age of 5..then expelled at age 11 for basically being a rebel..then they had her do a commencement speech later on...just shows you how much of an artist she is...she is a genius because she combines vocal command, music arrangement, and visual emotion....but what I love most is her writing ability...she tackles alot of subjects with no fear and her use of imagery in her writing is basically poetry at its best.

Omg you have no idea what’s ahead of you. Tori Amos is insanely incredible. She is a piano prodigy FYI. She still holds the record for being the youngest individual, at the age of 5, to be accepted into the Peabody Music Conservatory. She is very well-known and has a huge devout following. Every song and album is different and superb in their own right. Her lyrics are a lot of fun to analyze. She uses a lot of metaphors. Start with her debut album, Little Earthquakes, and go in order from there. Please react to more Tori. I would recommend reacting to her song Precious Things live next. Please. Thank you for the reaction. :)

This performance is the absolute best version Tori put on display. The raw emotion and on the cusp of tears vocals leaves you in awe every time. This is a gripping and gut wrenching performance of perfection. Her piano solo was off the hook, without even looking she hit the keys hard, fast and perfect. There probably wasn’t a dry eye afterwards and yes Pin Dropped they were in amazement.

This is how it begins. I was in the 4th grade when I heard this song. I'm 31 next month and I've been obsessed with her ever since. You should just listen to the entirety of Little Earthquakes, from Crucify all the way down to the title song Little Earthquakes. She's so nuanced and her lyrics will take you a lifetime to figure out, after another lifetime of trying to actually figure out what she's saying, because she sometimes will almost speak in tongues. When she's performing, Music takes over, and she's not Tori in that moment. Other live versions of songs (i don't think they have videos for these specific performances) are Sugar, Waitress, Cooling, and Precious Things from the To Venus and Back live album. Welcome to the Tori Amos fanclub, lol you'll never run out of things to listen to.

Like others said, any song from Tori Amos will work if you liked this one! The track is titled 91/92 because she released a live album called Montreux 91/92 (Montreux is a famous jazz festival in Switzerland and she performed there those years). Precious Things from the 91 concert is fabulous and shows a more confrontational side of her!

To me, the white horse are the self waiting and waiting to come out and play. But for some, it never happens, or like here, it happens too late, when the bloom of youth or the innocence has gone. The need for recognition from her father is so gripping. It's a life story in 3 minutes. A masterpiece

From full Peabody at John Hopkins Music scholarship awarded for her already self composed songs by the age of 5, they dropped her at 11 for basically wanting to write music she wanted not just what they wanted her to write. Her music is more then poetry, its like her reading her personal diary out in song. She commands a piano, the piano bows to her. Saw her on a morning talk show, the host joked about how easily she composed songs and laughed. She then created song, piano and lyrics on the spot, and it was catchy.

I wouldn't even try and work out my favourite Tori track but I do adore "Past The Mission", in no small part due to Trent Reznor's incredibly understated and weirdly sensual backing vocal

She portrays this song... her voice matures as she ages in the song. Then she remembers back to being a child with the lilt at the end.

Hi Dereck. As other people said, this live performance was taken from the "Live in Montreux" dvd which is really really good. Someone said she got better and better after her debut, but I don't think I would agree with this. Her first 3 albums were, for me, the best she did, peaking with "Boys for Pelé" which is a masterpiece. Then, she made another great album ("Scarlett's walk" which is very interesting too), After this, I must confess I felt more and more disapointed by her production, allthough there were still very good songs. Reacting to Tori Amos seems strangely relevant just after a week reacting to Kate Bush because during many years, and especially when she released her first album, Tori was constantly compared to Kate, and in many ways, that sounded so logical. You might feel surprised because you only reacted to "Running up that hill" which is very different from Kate Bush's typical piano/vocal ballads (KB uses an incredible amount of styles in her compositions, and so does Tori Amos). If you want to compare, here are 3 songs in which KB performs live piano songs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/povMkpeYaMejhas (After "Winter" by Tori Amos, "December will be magic again" by KB might feel relevant.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3eYiXuQZbODfcU ("The Man with the child in his eyes", a song she wrote when she was about 12 or 13! Same TV show as the song before.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpvdqqaGmb-FfZo ("Feel it", taken from her first tout at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1979) I don't intend to put both singer-songwriters in any kind of competition as the two of them are very important and interesting artists. I do prefer Kate Bush for many reasons but, as I said before, I really love Tori Amos' work, especially on her first three albums. Allthough they belong to the "same family" of artists, each of them definitely has something different to offer. As I already requested last time, PLEASE react to "Wuthering Heights" (version 1) official video, you might feel a bit "disturbed" by her quirkyness, but I'm sure you'll find it very interesting. Thanks for reacting to great artists like Kate Bush and Tori Amos in such a positive and clever way. Cheers!

From the choirgirl hotel is another masterpiece. I´d say her first 5 albums are masterpieces. From Little Earthquakes to Scarlet´s Walk. Venus is a good album, but I would no say it´s a masterpiece.
