I've been silently singing along with this song all these years (three decades now) and still don't quite know all the words by heart (yet) because it touches my heart every time so much that I choke up. Such a beautiful and marvelously moving song. Still absolutely stunning after all these years. 💜

I guess in a funny way everyone is rediscovering their inner voice with the times that we're living in. I love this track, it still gets me from hearing it the first time in the back of King Tut's all those years ago, it was a magical night, magical song.

You would think that, like most artists, she'd be totally sick of playing this song yet again, even though this was the 'gateway' song for a lot of her fans (like myself.) But when those opening notes come in, and that voice just HITS you right in the depths of your soul... I mean it's Tori, what else can you say?✌❤

Original as they come. She is like no one. And not just different, but that difference, is all of the technical excellence yes, but what it really is, is this sort of a "restrained tension". The cry of womanhood. Men roid rage, and destroy shit and put their anger and pain all in everyone's faces. Women, often "seethe", with a deeper sorrow and even in their most tortured moments, hold back from just letting it all out, often because they feel society has relegated them to that limited expression. The pain grows and becomes a demented, quiet beast of it's own. Not her, her pain. For that reason, men just don't know the true level of pain, anger, and frustration many women experience. You can feel her powerfully express it, but in a contained kind of way. The simultaneous contradiction, explains women, and nobody I've ever heard has done it. And yes, some men, including myself, can feel that as well. I feel it. I live it. I understand it (not that I don't occasionally rage).It resonates through all of her music. It's "quietly" more powerful than any Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden. It's real. You can't fake that. It's so much a part of her, she has made a technical artistry out of it and can impose it on anything. That's why she is awesome with any cover song. Overlaying the original with Tori is just something entirely new and magnificent. No better example than Teen Spirit. Kurt felt it. Which I guess is no surprise he's no longer with us. He expressed what she does, but in his style. That repetitious listing of things, part in anger, part in frustration, part in a I've-lost-it monotone perversion of communication. Then when Tori takes that same feeling, and expresses it in her style, well It's like a lovely duet of tortured restraint. And she's so in touch with it, just a few piano keys and immediately you feel her brand of restrained tension in the song, like nobody else can do. I sat in a concert hall in Dallas (working there temporarily) and it was the only time I've seen her besides TV. So close, it was fantastic. Such an artist at work to behold. I was in the middle of a bunch of young girls who you could tell followed her around the country. I'm not sure what they thought of me, like the only middle aged man, singing every song. For me, it was as it should be. I joined them in spirit, elevation and admiration. We were on the same ride. The power of music, can break through the shell of our outer and get right to the inside, which can be the same stuff in there, no matter what differences we have on the outside. I'm straight and rather stereotypically so. I've said sometimes that Tori puts me in touch with my feminine side. I think it really puts people off when I say that. They might wonder about just what I mean. I've tried to explain it, but they won't understand if they don't listen. Without Tori, I wouldn't fully understand that aspect of others and myself. There are other artists that express a contained frustration, but not in such a feminine way. And for any fool out there, that is not to say weak in anyway. Extremely powerful. And how she expresses that, and also such beauty all at the same time, seems impossible. Such is a woman. Thank You.

You're young yet. Men can seethe and women can rage. It may not be terribly common, but it happens.

You may or may not know that she was once raped. That might explain the tension you can feel in her haunting, yet beautiful voice, particularly on this song. She's a survivor, but that trauma must surely stay with her. Listen to her song: Me And a Gun.

So, who's the best female singer, ever? Well, as far as soulfull, I'd have to say Joni Mitchell. Best soprano voice, Joan Baez. Most pure beautiful voice, Sara MaClachan. But the most hauntingly beautiful voice would have to be Tori Amos. Particularly in this song, it gives me chills. That's my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

i've always loved this song but what the hell is she singing about? mermaids don't wear jeans because they have no legs, jeans of his with her name still on the tape? theyre his jeans so why would he have her name on the jeans. is that a way of ownership? why is she having beef with her mother-in-law for showing up in a nasty dress? is it that bad for the generation above you for having a different fashion sense?
@user-kh9ki3kq8m7 жыл бұрын
okonh0wp it's music. Don't be so critical. She also has a song about how lucifer calls her a water color stain and she spied on him from an airplane and says someone is hiding inside a hotdog. It all has meaning.

From Tori herself..."So I was with my niece Cody, who was a little girl at the time, and she's very much a part of "Silent All These Years," because she loved fairytales and stories, and we would share the Little Mermaid story - Hans Christian Andersen and the idea that she'd lost her voice - and watching Cody respond to this young woman giving up her essence and power, all for something else, and in that moment, I realized that when she had no voice, that just completely took me to the place where I needed to go to reclaim it."

Nice way to bring politics into something that people need as a respite from the weary world... and also has nothing to do with the things you brought up. 👌 Oh and also congrats on your attempt to degrade something transcendental like this song by bringing it down to earth and showing your own biases. Lucky for us it doesn't change the inherent beauty of this work of art.
