The thing that I have always loved about this song is the line "all the white horses are still in bed" until the very last time it changes to "all the white horses have gone ahead" it is a melancholy song about missed opportunities...especially when you don't know how to value yourself. When this album came out in 1992 Tori was exactly what I needed and the entire album is brilliant!

I've seen her live twice and both times you could hear a pin drop throughout the audience the whole time she performs. Never seen a performance that comes close to her.

Seeing her early in her career are some of the best show experiences of my life. The audience was utterly rapt and like you said, you could hear a pin drop. She’s still an amazing performer, but audiences don’t show the same respect at shows that they used to.

This is such a gorgeous song and Tori always has a fantastic delivery. There’s another video of her doing this song - very similar, but she wears a blue dress - and her use of pauses and volume is so different. When it’s just you and your piano, without a band to keep to the same cadence, you can add so much flexibility and creativity, and Tori does it masterfully.

In terms of virtuosity, musicality and expression Tori IS one of the best of all time. She pulled a similar (or even better) feat for "Winter" at the same location one year earlier (1991). I would really advise you to check out more of her repertoire cause she is a gem that only comes around once every century.

Tori is an artist that is truly amazing live. She rarely performs a song the same way twice. She is absolutely brilliant and I think she is one the best artists of all time.

Saw Tori live in 1996. Concert changed my life. I got her 1st albulm in 1992 “Little Earthquakes” when it dropped. I lived with her they HS and beyond! Later she performed her concerts with 3 different types of pianos around her and played all 3 during the same songs!!!! She was accepted full scholarship to the famous Peabody School of Music at 5 yrs old!!! Virtuoso on piano, singer and composer! One of the reasons you love the pauses and silences is because she is known as one of the greatest artist in using breathe control. Letting it out over extremely long series of singing and pausing. In other songs she uses her breath intake as part of the sounds od the songs. Brilliant. Great job. ❤✌️

Tori is an amazing story teller. This song is especially special for me. I nearly lost my father a while back, I still remember every moment of the conversation where he was essentially handing over the guard to me (oldest). It hurts to hear this but it’s also like a cleansing cry. My dad made it through; but this one’s gonna hurt a lot more when he does pass.

The other Tori Amos song you covered was Me and a Gun, which, in this concert, directly precedes this song. Back to back, these 2 songs are an amazing concert closer. Yes, Tori is an absolutely, heartbreakingly captivating performer. Even more incredible is that this is one of her 1st concerts after her album debut. A bit of fun trivia, Tori, at age 5, was the youngest person to be admitted to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins studying classical piano. Tori is such an amazing artist, incredible piano player and singer and when asked she thinks of herself a composer first. I prefer her live recordings before her studio recordings. Her studio albums are beautiful, but live there is a raw little edge and so many emotions washing over you. Thanks!

Her songs are always up for interpretation, and there are conflicting ideas about this song, but i do believe the last verse and chorus are meant to be Tori flipping it back to her father, "hair is grey, and the fires are burning, so many dreams on the shelf", like most parents, Tori's father sacrificed much so that she could have her opportunities, and she asks him, "when you gonna love you as much as I do?" It really is one of the most loving tributes a father can get. Tori has some criticism for her father, but that comes later in her catalogue.
