I still can't find if there is a benefit for getting a toric lens if I want a close (near-sighted) lens. If I get a non-toric can't I just get contacts and glasses to correct the astigmatism?

The benefit is that you are not required to wear spectacles as it would correct cylinderical number also. Yes you can use lenses to correct astigmatism if you get non toric.
