I flew on BOAB London-New York 1981, for the princely sum of £1500. I thought I would never have such an opportunity again. Was en route to Montreal , emigrating from UK. Canada gave me the opportunity to learn to fly, progressing up the ladder to G4, Challenger, plus DC3 rating and time on that. My biggest impression, apart from the obvious technology, was of how utterly effortless the flight was, compared with any other way of crossing the pond, even first class. I could see how people could go to the US, do business, and return in 24 hours. What a plane, nothing like it now

I miss the days of the mighty Concorde it was such a majestic bird and modern marvel of ingenuity. I was in the service in the later 80's and got to see one landing out in NY where I was stationed. The fact that they retired her after the one in 2003 had run over a piece of metal banding from another plane causing a tire to explode and puncturing a fuel tank was beyond tragic. I wish they still flew, their beauty is unmatched even in today's aviation!

My wife and I flew the Concord from JFK to Heathrow Dec 13, 1997 to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We were taking a repositioning cruise on the QE2 from England to New York and BA standard airfare was included in the cruise cost, but for $500.00 each, we could upgrade to fly the Concord. No brainer. This is the same day there was a fire in the Burger King restaurant ventilation ducts at Heathrow and for a while we were told we might have to land in Paris instead of London. We were eventually cleared to land in London. Without question, the most impressive flight I have ever been on.

I flew on that plane back in 1998. It was a first class ride all the way. All 144 seats were first class. The food, cheese and wines were like something you'd dine on in a 5 star restaurant. The ride at that height was as smooth as silk, not even 1 bump from air distortion. After 3 hours and 10 minutes, we touched down at JFK. It was the best flight ever, nothing like the cattle cars we are stuck with now. Superb aircraft.

Whether it was this particular aircraft or not, I do not know. But, we were allowed to look at their hoist and also enter the aircraft. I was amazed how antiquated the flight deck and controls looked. The long pathway from the flight deck door to the actual seats were filled with electronic control black boxes. The controls reminded me of a 727. Obviously they were not, but I expected the flight deck to have controls that were semi glass cockpit. I was still impressed and still consider this to be the most beautiful passenger aircraft that was built. I wish that they were still flying.

The Captain of that Concorde flight came to our model flying club a couple of weeks before the accident flight and gave us a talk on flying Concorde. At the time, I was working for a UK TV News organisation, and was on duty when the story came in. I managed to get a VHS of the report and forwarded it to the Captain. One of the things we learned was that every Concorde was "hand-made", and that, as a result, parts were not readily interchangeable between aircraft. A new rudder had to be fashioned specifically for that aircraft before it could be flown home!

But like the Constellation, the reality of changing economics, regulations, and advanced technology made it obsolete. The complexity and operating costs of the Concorde mean it has a future only in museums.
