Күн бұрын

Last weekend several tornados hit southern Indiana. One of our subscribers, Curt, reached out to us to see if we wanted to help with the cleanup. We loaded up Johnny 2 (John Deere 2038R) with the Artillian Grapple and Heavy Hitch rear ballast and headed down to Freedom, IN. Tim discusses the pros and cons of the turf/radial tires on the 2038R.

@@JDSWeather I did reach out to a local guy who sells firewood. He was tentatively planning to join us the following Friday, but the lots we were going to clear were taken care of Thursday. Turns out he works for a saw mill. He said he had saws and he would donate time, he didn't even want the wood. There is still a lot of good in the world.

It's funny you talked about a more aggressive tire on the front - My BX came with Ag tread front and back - The rear tires were swapped out to turf tires and I still have the Ag tires on the front - the combo works really well for me, especially when I do snow removal - very nice of everyone chipping in to help this family with their storm damage - cheers to you all

I have R4's on my 2032R. They're not bad on turf, and I don't find them to get filled with mud under normal circumstances. I'm not sure it would be my tire of choice if I did more work in muddy areas though. They do well in snow too. The only time I need to use the bucket to push myself out is if I'm on ice, and nothing why of chains would help that anyway. Overall I think they're a good tire choice for turf, snow duty, and light mud.

If I was only going to use my tractor in the woods or fields I would opt for ag tires or the industrial R4’s. With that said, I love my R3+ for my tractor work. Tim, using spacers seems like a good thing. I know trying to flip the wheels to try and get a wider stance is a no no according to my 3039R manual while using the loader. I was wondering if spacers would be the ticket, i work mainly on a slope so I"m looking for more stability.

Hi TTWT....I have a random question on your thoughts on this. I use my tractor for maint work on 3 condo complexes. More and more i'm seeing the dumpsters starting to overflow 2 days usually before pickup date. Personally i'm attributing it to more people shopping online and instead of breaking down their delivery cartons they're just throwing them intact into the dumpsters which is just creating a lot of empty air pockets. 2 or 3 weeks ago I got the idea to start using the loader bucket to try to compress the trash in them. These are all 4 yd dumpsters and I just pull up to them...open both sides of the lids...and angle the bucket downward (open side down)...and just lower the bucket. I am getting good results and maybe reclaiming 1/8th to 1/4 the space. (usually more like 1/8th). It seems limited though by 2 things. First...how deep the bucket can go down inside without hitting the front edge of the dumpsters. But MORESO..it seems like the hydraulic pressure just isn't there. So instead i'm lifting the bucket again and again to just try to bash it down more..which then works some. My QUESTION is this. Is the pressure coming DOWN on a hydraulic system just the loader/bucket Weight? Meaning..theres really no hydraulics instead? It kind of seems that way because it just seems to stop with no real force behind it. What I was also thinking of trying after seeing your video on how much the loader will lift is to just lay the bottom of the bucket on the overflowed trash and then curl the bucket down. None are full enough yet to try that theory but thought i'd throw It out there as a question as well. Right now..increasing the size of the dumpsters isn't an option due to the costs involved. (trash..is expensive :) ) And it seems like I should be able to get more out of this idea I had. Thanks for any comments or thoughts you might have. :) (and ps: so nice of you to help out these people with the storm damage. :) )
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 5 жыл бұрын
There IS down pressure on the loader hydraulics. However, it is only going to push down until the front wheels come off the ground. If you could strap 3-400 lbs in your bucket, then push down, you would see more down force, make sense? Also, you might try pallet forks. They would have more directed force. Only the two points to focus your limited down force. ...and it might be easier to add weight to the pallet forks . Any of this make sense, or help you?
@RJ4O4
@RJ4O4 5 жыл бұрын
@@TractorTimewithTim yep. definitely makes sense. I was actually thinking about getting something like a cement parking curb and installing a couple hooks into it. Attaching it somehow to the bucket and using it as more weight like you describe. One issue about putting something IN the bucket is id be losing that extra depth in not really being able to tip it down. As I mentioned the edge of the dumpster is limiting how far the loader can come down. Im also going to have to test on a flat surface whether the bucket can lift the front off the ground. It just REALLY seems like the downward pressure isn't there and more like its just the weight of the bucket. I get that sense because there seems to be no "push" behind it. Anyways..Thanks ! and i'l play around with it and come up with something better. Just another reason to own one of these things though :) real money saver. I mean, if I had to upgrade 4 4yd dumpsters per condo complex we'd be talking 100's a month. :) Thanks :)
@RJ4O4
@RJ4O4 5 жыл бұрын
@Tractor Time with Tim So..i did a little test today on the front. And yep..it does lift the front wheels off the ground. And so, I guess the push is there and for some odd reason i'm just not really feeling it. I actually had another thought today though that i'm going to test when the dumpsters get fuller. I'm going to try putting two car ramps in front of the dumpsters to let me raise the front end. this should let me get the bucket in deeper when i'm lowering it instead of hitting the edge. Anyways..thought i'd report on this because this can be a real money saver. I mean..if I can fully utilize this it will save the cost of upgrading SIXTEEN dumpsters from 4yds to 6. I mean...that's like buying a new subcompact every six months with the savings. :) Thanks TTWT!

The galaxy’s are an option on the 2038r from the factory. You shoulda ordered them.

@@TractorTimewithTim The 2032R that I am getting was at the Dealers other location, so they will have to swap out the tires.

The grapple came in handy. Cutting up trees and moving debris is hard work. I hope the house is not damaged very much. I bet the interns did not expect to get in on a project like this. I know the one intern said he was from MA, but I failed to catch where the other was from.

They worked really hard and even after it all they had actually helped me get a bigger group of volunteers to go back on Friday but the Amish came and cleaned up place we were going to work on, as well as their neighbor's places, for firewood. Tim and Christy were planning to come back down too. Tim and Christy, as well as the students I worked with that day are the real deal. There is still a lot of good in the world.

Looking to get a 2038R with radial tires and MX5 brush cutter. I also plan on getting the 2" wheel spacers and running front end loader when cutting. Will this setup handle the slopes and hills? I wouldn't be doing anything steeper than 15 degrees. Thanks.

15 will make you pucker. But I suspect you can handle it. I highly recommend Rimguard for the rear tires.

@@TractorTimewithTim would a 3039r be more stabile for side hilling with an MX5? Also can you get the radial tires on a 3039r?

No, 3039r will be LESS stable, and radial tires are not an option from the factory on 3R

@@TractorTimewithTim not arguing, just asking for information sake. Why would it be less stable with the larger frame and larger wider rear tires? More top heavy or something?

Not much wider if I remember correctly. …and it is taller. The cab version is worse. Open station might not be too bad.
