Tornado takes off from RAF Northolt - Low & Loud!

Very rare sight of the desert pink "Operation Granby" Tornado GR4 taking off from RAF Northolt in London after visiting for the 2016 night photo-shoot. As you can tell, the pilot gave us something to smile about by giving us a nice low pass with afterburners on!

Officially the last Tornado to visit Northolt. The type has now retired from service as of March 2019.

I was based at RAF Northolt quite a number of years ago, we had a tornado as a static display for families day. As I remember, the runway was only just long enough for it to land. The traffic had to be stopped on the A40 for it to take off (it departed from the other end of the runway to this video) The crew gave those in the traffic jam something to watch, as soon as they cleared the perimeter fence, they pulled up pretty much vertical over the line of traffic! Quite a departure!

Ah yes, those were the days, could have multiple tornados visit on a families day. I too seen quite a few go in and out over the years but this is the only one I managed to film!

@@northoltflightwatch I also had a great posting to RAF Cottesmore back in the TTTE days, that was a tornado fan's paradise! I remember one year (1995 I'm fairly certain) the display ship was painted gloss black. The pilot would use the chimney at the police dog section as a reference point to approach the display line when they were practicing, which meant that they would scream overhead at around 250 feet.. quite often even lower!

@Irigouis88 I'm not sure of the technical reason (I seem to remember the aircrew saying that the landing is the bit that is right on the limit) The tornado obviously has thrust reverse but the runway is still only just long enough to get down. I base this on four years at RAF cottesmore (ttte back in the day) various other postings with operational tornados (gr1, gr4 and f3) and six years at RAF northolt... So I knew the runway quite well!
