I did a lot of research on the battery powered mowers and I don't believe one can't go wrong with either mower so my advice is buy the one you like based on features, looks and comfort. Forget everything else like run time, power, cut quality because the two mowers are just to closely matched and you aren't going to notice a difference. I stuck with a gas mower for the simple reason that I wasn't willing to spend the money on a expensive battery somewhere down the road 5 - 6 years from now. But when I was looking it came down to the mower I bought and The Ego.

Hey Brett, love your channel. I have followed you for along time. I hate to be negative but I do feel the cards were stacked against the EGO. 1. In the test in the field it beat the Toro by a whole lap and instead of giving it the win it was chalked up to the speed John was walking. And that may have been but in that case would have loved to seen a side by side test to have a true winner with no excuses. I think the ego would have won personal. 2. In the deep grass test #1 The ego started at 7:47 and Stopped at 7:51. 4 second run. The Toro started at 8:11 and stopped at 8:15. 4 second run while stopping a mowers length short Not a huge difference but still went a little easier on Toro maybe. 3. Deep Grass #2 (this test was the real issue) The ego started at 8:41 and Stopped at 8:48. 7 second run. The Toro started at 8:53 and reached the geo approx at 9:06. 13 second run. To me it look like you went half the speed on that pass with the toro as the ego and of course the cut will be cleaner if your going half the speed.. And I think you missed one to the things I personally love about the ego, The mower height adjustment system. The toros system is old old school.

Would love a response if you have a minute. The ego won 2 it of 3 test and was cheated on the third test in my opinion yet you and Jon gave the win to the toro. Was this because Toro gave you a mower?

The one lever adjustment has it's disadvantages too. For example, sometimes when mulching lush spring grass, a mower can start to leave clumps. A lawn care pro trick is to raise the rear wheels one notch above the front wheels which will often help with this. Also in the fall it is advantageous to be able to raise the front end of the mower higher than the rear to allow the mower to mulch leaves better without just plowing them out of the way.

The current recommendation by the turf researchers is to mow cool season grasses (bluegrass, fescue) at 3 or 3-1/2 inches all year. Don't change cutting height at all. It encourages greater root growth which means greater ability to withstand drought with less watering. And mulch, never bag. So blade height adjustments and ease of bag removal are irrelevant. I have an older battery mower and a 20-year-old gas mower, neither with power drive. The battery mower is much lighter and I love it but have to charge the battery after mowing the front or back.

I wanted a change so i bought the toro. It's very nice and this is my first self propelled and in AZ, no idea why I waited so long. I don't feel as tired in the lovely summers of AZ, as I did. The pace self prop. control works amazing. The only thing I miss about the ego is the weight. This toro is heavy, unlike the ego it only noticeable when you have to push it when it's off or store it. Battery life is good, my yard is about 1/3 of an acre and the battery easily finishes it. I'll probably keep the toro until it dies or if they make a plastic body.

I bought the Ego 3rd gen 2 days ago. If I knew about this Toro E-mower I probably would've went with that one just for the cut quality. I think for my lawn the ego will get the job done, but I would recommend the Toro over the Ego to anyone else(I may attempt to return the Ego and go with the the Toro if I can). a few remarks: I'm not too concerned about top speed as my lawn isn't big enough to warrant fast paced mowing anyway. Would only be a factor if I had a huge acre and a half lawn to mow. The bag/mulch switch on the Toro, while it's a nifty and useful feature, won't mean much as you have to take the bag off anyway in order to store it. the only benefit I see of this feature is not having to remove the bag for mulching. some may say that not having a plug is one less part to lose but most people are gonna bag once for the season and then go back to mulching. Some states don't allow you to bag grass so the plug thing isn't going to be as big of a factor as some may believe as you're hardly ever going to remove it. Nevertheless, you buy a lawnmower to cut the grass and while the Ego has a lot of nice creature comfort features, The Toro excels in the sole reason you buy a lawnmower...Cutting the grass.

This was a cool comparison, but with a rather fatal flaw. The Toro comes with a single blade, a gator-type high-lift blade. The Select Cut comes installed with a standard "mulching" blade (in addition to the second X-blade), which is a smaller, narrower blade. This is the blade that was used in the test. But Ego *also* includes the gator-style high-lift blade, which is usually a separate accessory for other Ego mowers. In my experience on my super classic 20" Ego mower, the high-lift blades makes an extraordinary improvement not just on pulling leaves up but also on the ability to cut through tall grass without bogging down. It also leaves no wet grass clumps nor "mohawk" stripes as someone mentioned above. I imagine the greatly improved vacuum effect of the high-lift blade has something to do with this. Yes, the high-lift blade is louder, but if you wanted to compare apples-to-apples, you should've reviewed the Select Cut with the same type of blade installed. So, so close to a perfect review.

BTW - the 2021 EGO XP (LM2156SP) has an easy-to-set variable speed drive from about 1 mph to 3 mph and has a 6 LED battery charge level indicator and the cutting blades are 100% metal and are a reasonable thickness comparable, but slightly thinner, than gas mower blades. It also comes with 3 interchangeable blades - Standard, mulch, and a higher suction bagger-blade (comes with the mulch blade installed). The 2 on/off drive buttons, each about 4 inches long on each side of the push bar, are convenient to allow you to turn off the self-propel feature at the end of a straight cut allowing you to quickly turn the mower around and then re-engage the drive. Also, these young strong guys think the EGO is super light, but it is not “light” since it weighs 63 lb with the 7.7 lb 10 Ah battery installed. The current Toro Battery Recycler with the most features (21466) weighs 95 lb. The smallest Toro battery model (21356) only weighs 75 lb. Bottomline - you need just enough weight to keep the mower on the ground, but no more. The more excess weight you have makes it harder to handle. Th 65 lb EGO XP has enough weight to keep the mower’s wheels on the ground while mowing. Note that the best Toro battery is 7.5 Ah, compared to the 10 Ah EGO battery. The smaller 7.5 Ah Toro Battery takes 3 hours to charge. The bigger 10 Ah EGO battery only takes 1 hour to charge. EGO has a 5 year mower warranty. Toro has a 2 yr warranty on models 21356 & 21466 and a 5 yr on the 21388 which has a cast aluminum deck. Toro only warrants their battery for 3 years while EGO gives you 5 years on the battery if you register the mower within 90 days of purchase. One last thing about the mower deck material - this really doesn’t matter much. The part of the mower you want strong is the motor-to-blade drive train which no one talks about and which I don’t know about either (e.g., what happens when the blade hits a stump or metal stake?). Maybe someone rich can do a deconstruct on both the EGO and Toro? Did you also know that EGO makes an impressive looking zero-turn-radius 22 HP riding mower that can fit enough batteries to mow 4 acres?

Thanks for the review guys! You guys totally convinced me to buy the EGO hands down. I don’t care about traditional mowing experience. I’ve had that experience already with my old Briggs and Stratton and hated it for 25 years of mowing. The Ego has a way better battery and mulches super good. Manoeuvrability and the light weight along with far more versatile self propelled system gets my job done faster with a superior cut. That personal pace on the Toro is clunky and you can’t be as precise as the hands off/on as the EGO. The demo is unrealistic mowing a tall pasture with a battery mower. For personal home use and the ease of use and the awesome fold and storage of the EGO is way more convenient. You could store it on a shelf in your garage or shed if you want. Toro is nice, but offers nothing new in terms of technology or design other than the battery power.

I'm with you. See my comment above: the test was using the standard mulching blade that comes with the Select Cut. Using the high-lift blade (or, even better, combining the standard and high-lift blade in an X configuration as Electric Lawn Services/Electric Cuts have demonstrated) will likely have leveled the playing field in terms of cutting through the gnarly stuff. It may have even exceeded the Toro's performance, given the dual-blade configuration normally "clears" debris better by chopping it up more finely.

the ego select cut is a great mower I run them commercially only isue is lift and suction and it can be mostly fixed with some blade modifications, I hope EGO makes a more professional unit in the future as the lift could be increased which would make this mower more or less untouchable. The toro seems interesting in the suction or lift but I know you wont get as good mulching with a single heavier blade. Ego makes the best batteries which was very impoartant when making a decision which electric tools to use commercially.

There’s a potential issue that no one mentions; repair. The Tora can be repaired by any Toro dealer and probably many independents. The only difference between it and the gas version is the motor and battery vs. engine. The EGO, which I own, can only be serviced by EGO, especially during the warrantee period. My first EGO was returned to Home Depot after the 3rd mowing when the self propelled speed control failed. My 2nd EGO’s speed control failed the start of the 3rd season. One must return it for warantee service through Home Depot. It has been 3 months and I do not expect to see it again this year. I hope your EGO does not break. BTW, I’m curently running an old 2-stroke Lawn Boy which I have kept running myself for 20 years.

Absolutely fair points! I think the real unknown is the long term reliability of the battery mowers.
@irongoose3865
@irongoose3865 4 жыл бұрын
The long term issues that might arise with battery powered mowers was the reason why I bought a Toro Super Recycler over The Ego. That SR should last a long time and I expect to have it for at least 10 years and maybe a lot more. It's a high quality mower so I don't expect to be messing around with petty things on it either like wheels and ropes. Plus the deck is aluminum. It cost $50.00 less than The Ego at the time too. The Ego on the other hand will require an expensive battery at some point, present costs for a 7.5 amh bat is like $300! I probably won't spend that much on my SR in 15 years and if I do it will be spread out over those years and not all at once . Now if I made a lot of money this might not be an issue for me and the convenience of a battery powered mower......... You are the first person I've heard having reliability issues with your Ego and I'm glad you brought this to light. One of the selling points of battery powered mowers is maintance free but what good is that when they aren't reliable and it takes forever to get one fixed?

Earlier this year I returned a reconditioned Ego because it didn't cut well, the drive system was clunky and noisy, more difficult to attach the bagger and only even inch cutting heights; no 1/2 inch. I got a Toro that has been a virtually seamless transition from my old Honda gas mower and it cuts essentially as well, and corrects the deficiencies I had with the Ego. Occasionally I will get a missed blade of grass but only occasionally. It packs more into the bagger than my Honda could. On my 1/4 acre lot's net lawn, I get a full mow with charge left to spare.

I know this video is old, but it just popped up in my feed, probably because I had the 60v Toro and recently switched to Ego. Why? One major factor is that battery life on the Toro was crap. I live on a corner lot in a subdivision, and I couldn't get through my less-than-0.25 acre lot plus the surrounding parkway on a single charge with the Toro. With my new Ego mower, I can do that all and still have about 50% battery life left. I also absolutely love the easy height adjustment on the Ego, and find that the dual-blade system mulches significantly better than the Toro. While I did have some reservations about switching from the Toro's steel deck to Ego's plastic, I know several people who have had Egos for years and have had no issues. And the lighter weight is a plus to me, because it makes it easier to move and store the mower. I don't even use the self-propel feature all the time because it's so much easier to push. Just some thoughts from someone who has owned both.

What about bagging performance?? It has been found the exit ramp on the Toro is so steep it won't blow clipping into the bag very well - leaves a lot of clippings on the ground. I like them both, trying to decide between these or the Greenworks, but I need a snow-blower too on the same battery platform. The Ego Select-Cut has better cutting performance, and their snow machine is really nice with the steel auger. I really wanted the Toro, I started pushing them around when I as a little kid - Grandpa always had Toros. But half the season we bag as the grass grows so fast, so it's kind of a bummer in that regard.

OK, this may piss some off, but I don't care, as I'm actually looking to buy a mower. So to sum up: 1) With 7.5ah battery the cost win goes to EGO. $599 vs $659. 2) For the thick stuff the test was flawed since you took your time with the Toro and the Toro had the conventional blade. I'm not saying this was intentional. I have seen another test where the EGO beat 17 other electrics and 6 gas mowers including 2 Commercial mowers. It barely lost to a Commercial grade Honda. Calling it a draw. 3) Ergonomics is a mixed bag and is largely an unknown since you just can't make a proper decision without using each. Heavier/lighter, handle adjustment, ease of storage, and drive type and controls. 4) Features: this a tough one with the mulch/bagger switch and the visual battery charge LEDs. But... you can easily push the lighter EGO with its ball-bearing wheels and you cannot with the Toro. So, to me it is a tough call from my chair. The biggest thing for me is I think I want the steel deck because I generally hate plastic. Of course the plastic will never rust. At 83lbs the Toro is still light(my cub cadet is 135lbs). Toro does have larger wheels(you should have mentioned this) 11/9 vs. 9/7. Toro has 22" blade vs. EGOs 2 21" blades. EGO goes farther on a charge using self propulsion and can be pushed without using it. And then there's the Kobalt mower that gets the heads up on another site as best overall. This is gonna be really tough. Did I sum it up fairly well?

The mulch blade on the EGO hurt it on the large grass competition. If they each had the same blades, it would have been close. The EGO does do a bit better job mulching than the Toro does. Also, the Toro is built tougher but it does have plastic wheels while the EGO has ball bearings.

One thing that I don't think was mentioned. My son has an ego which I borrow a couple times a year (I live in an HOA which does all the grass cutting except a couple times a year which is when I borrow my sons Ego). The Ego does a very poor job on sucking up leaves or mulching. I had a gas Toro Self Pace and it was outstanding sucking up leaves and grass clippings (Sold it when we moved into HOA). I just wonder if this electric Toro Self Pace is as good as the gas Toro. I had ours for 25 years and loved it.

Talking about how long the batteries would last, Ive owned EGO brand for close to 3 years and the battery warranty is 3 years. When I noticed 2 of my 2.5 ah batteries lasting only 7 minutes on the 56v leaf blower (should last at least 15 on full blast) the EGO company replaced them under warranty. The 5.0 ah on my EGO lawnmower is still going strong. The EGO has a reset button on their chargers and the chargers will stop charging when the battery is full. It is a great product! I like Toro as well my previous mower was a 22” recycler (gas) fed and super heavy. I’ll keep the EGO.

I have had the same success with warranty on an EGO 2.5 ah and 7.5 ah batteries. The 7.5 ah started to blink its light a month before the 3-yr warranty was set to expire. For perspective, I use the 7.5 ah battery in my LM2102 self-propelled mower for about 9 months out of the year, and each mowing session is about 45 minutes, so I felt I got the life out of the battery. As for the 2.5 ah battery, it gets alot of use in my EGO 530 cfm blower - blowing leaves, drying the car, etc. Overall, no other warranty issues with the mower, line trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer, or edger.

I had a great experience with EGO warranty as well. After owning my mower for 4 years it’s starting having power issues. Since EGO was unable to pinpoint the issue, they shipped me a brand new mower. No questions asked, no runaround, no making my life hard. They simply said a new one will be at your door in 4-6 business days!

I think you guys did a very fair review of both mowers. I have a toro gas personal pace, and I just bought a greenworks pro 25in duel blade. Love the Toro personal pace and the heavy build quality of it. The Greenworks is lighter and easier to maneuver in small yards especially if you have pull it backwards a lot. The Toro is a little bit better in quality of cut but not by much.

I watched your video a 2nd time and thought about... your comparisons. Accept for the crazy high grass cut comparison, which most people don't get into, either works well, especially on normal lawns. I just whish Toro would adopt the pin push or one-lever height adjustment, because after mulching grass, picking up leaves in Fall and Spring at a lower setting for more suction is my greatest need. Also, Toros are made in America, which is always good to support and may become a factor in the future parts and service.

Driveline loss in the belt driven slipping transmission is one reason to design for electric. You don’t put a new electric motor into a rear wheel drive car and keep the same heavy transmission, prop shaft, rear diff and axle. I think Toro should keep this deck, but use a separate motor for self propelled.

I'm a new homeowner here looking for a lawnmower (who has never owned one before), and that particular Toro was one that caught my attention at the store. As someone who wants a good, quality mower at a decent price (and thinking electric, not gas), would there honestly be any reason not to go with the Toro? Or would the Toro be a solid choice for someone in my position? I'm not looking for anything extravagant, just something efficient enough for me to cut all my lawn in one single outing (the lot my house is on is about a quarter acre or so), that will last, and won't cost a ton.

I’ve owned the 2nd gen ego and noticed when cutting at 4 inches it left grass laying down with Mohawk stripes... I sold that one and purchased both the ego select cut and toro 60 volt and the cut quality on the toro is far superior... the select cut still left Mohawk stripes where the toro cuts clean. I think if you mow at 3 inches or less with the ego it cuts fine. Love the toro 60 volt cut quality!!! Great review by you both!

@steviem5279
@steviem5279 4 жыл бұрын
I feel better because I thought I was the only one with that same issue. I purchased my Ego last year and it took me a while until I noticed that the suction was terrible on the higher settings. From the #3 setting up it was terrible. In the fall I purchased the high lift blade and it help a little but not much and I have to mow at the #3 setting which they say is roughly 2.5 inches. The #4 setting (3 inches) with the high lift blade is ok but not great either so, I'm stuck mowing at 2.5 inches, it sucks having constantly go back to where the grass matts down, rake it up so it stands and then mow it again and its tough to get every spot. I'm going to finish out the season with the Ego and get rid of it for the Toro to use next year as I've heard that the lift on it is very good even in the higher settings...I also heard the Greenworks Commercial line (21 inch) is very good too but its pricey.
@steviem5279
@steviem5279 4 жыл бұрын
I tried to contact Ego about this but they never really gave me a straight answer but, does the lack of suction or lift on the higher settings have anything to do with the plastic housing? The thin blade? or a combination of both? You pointed out on the video that the Toro has a similar blade to a gas mower and of course it has the steel housing so, I wonder if that's is the reason for the gas mower type lift?
@ArielCowan

It seems like the bar across the handle arms would get in the way lifting the bag off the EGO. On my gas mower, the bag comes straight up between the arms - super easy. When it comes down to is user preference LOL I think you were leaning more towards the Toro. I think the ego is more futuristic lighter and last longer and the battery is charged faster. Also show the condition of the blades looks like you did a lot of heavy cutting which blade takes more abuse and we all know the battery all last longer and charge faster on the ego that's important to me. Again seems like you guys were leaning towards the Toro. What I did like about the Toro is the bagging and the mulching option but still looks old fashion to me eagles more futuristic. They Spent more time talking about their tests than they spent setting them up properly. I have not seen a single electric lawn mower video where they have a decent test lawn to mow, you know, a lush thick lawn that was previously cut correctly and has grown for a week and needs recut. Regarding this video - Who would push any mower crazy fast into an uneven mess of 2 foot tall weeds on uneven ground? That was not a test at all, almost any mower gas or electric would fail that and the conditions were very different for both mowers.

I find 2 areas of the EGO that I really don't like that you guys didn't address. First, it "feels" bulky and heavy. I still have not found a comfortable way to do "the turns" when going up and back - I've tried doing a high swing around, a low swing around, a few different pivot points and the thing is a boat to drive :) Would have like the drive to be on the front wheels, it's heavy and clumsy. I have to wonder how the turn around feels on the Toro. The other thing is SO SO many times the EGO gets "caught" in its forward gear drive when you want to manually pull the mower back out from under the bushes or other similar situations. It gets locked into forward motion and if you have no room left to roll forward you have to DRAG it out from the place it locked itself into. These are not small insignificant points to me. In fact, those 2 points made me look at your video :) I think I saw one spot where the Toro seems like a handful to spin and turn but there is not enough video there to see it clearly.

Guys. If you are going to compare grass cutting mowers it would be much more helpful if you compared them doing what they were engineered to do which is cut standard length gas. Not cutting foot high field grass and weeds. No one is going to use them for that. That really showed us nothing. Run the mowers side by side on a normal lawn. Plus you didn't speak about the second most important aspect which is the self propel mechanisms. You didn't compare the personal pace vs ego's dial system. I'm not trying to be negative just my opinion.
