Toronto Freeways - Highway 404 - Keswick to the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway

Fantastic video as always. Now that you mention it I love all the vegetation that surrounds the DVP, very beautiful especially in all the shades of Autumn. Too often nowadays 'Parkway' is now just another word for freeway, it's easy to forget that these roads were designed to provide a scenic recreational driving experience in mind, in addition to being a main thoroughfare. The DVP really has a lot of parallels with Southern Cross Drive here in Sydney. Both were originally intended to be primarily a short commuter drive and not the only route into the city, but then had full blown expressways (in this case the 404) connected to them by short-sighted planners after other planned routes got cut, despite the fact that they were originally not constructed to provide such a function, leading to significant congestion.

Thanks for the comment. It's true, when the DVP was first constructed it was envisioned to be just one of many routes into Downtown Toronto. Rightfully or wrongfully since none of the other routes into the city were constructed, the DVP is now the only major route into the central city from both the north and east.

Wonderful video as always. I always am dumbfounded by the fact that the DVP and the Gardiner (and the other municipal expressways for that matter) have not been uploaded by the province yet. The gaps in the design standards are becoming more and more clear as the years go by, the cities keep running out of money to maintain them properly and they’re often utilized by exurban residents. Realistically speaking it only makes sense that the province take it over and in particular repair that painful bottleneck at the DVP/404/401 interchange.

I went south from Woodbine & Ravenshoe to 404 only once back in 2016, and I didn’t notice that left-hand merge until you showed it. Meanwhile, 🤣 at 0:52.

I heard the plan was eventually to link up Highway 404 to Highway 12 or 48 near Beaverton but that's MANY years off from completion... and traffic levels don't exactly warrant it *yet* (though if the Regional Municipality of York continues its explosive population growth, it might get built sooner rather than later)
