I will never forget this trip... Almost two years ago I took this train from Toronto to Vancouver and it was simply amazing. Being in a single room, with no distractions, a heater, toilet, sink and my own bed made the trip so accommodating. Waking up in the middle of the night to the moon shining through the northern Ontario pine trees, knowing you’re in the middle of nowhere yet amongst others just makes it much more comforting. I recommend this to everyone, you’ll spend 5 days on this train and you won’t regret a single moment. It will also make you appreciate this country a lot more, we have such a beautiful wilderness that’s still untouched and hopefully it will always stay that way.

When it came to food, it must not be a food you have to refrigerate or heat up. This website should answer all your questions: www.viarail.ca/en/travel-info/baggage. Thanks for the memories. A single 23 year old immigrant from England, I took the train in April 1966 to Vancouver (4 days) after a horrible crossing (force 7 gale) , arriving a day late in Montréal and missing a layover night at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Arrived in Vancouver with $400, no job, nowhere to stay. Six months later was in Vernon, BC working for The Bay. Been a Canadian citizen ever since, but living now in Vermont. In those days the train went through Calgary, Banff, the Kicking Horse Tunnels, Rockies, Salmon Arm, Kamloops, Fraser Canyon, Hope to Van.

In 2008 my wife and I took this train when we moved from toronto to vancouver island. Wonderful trip. We did the sleeper class. It was comfortable. The folks in economy were pretty uncomfortable by the fourth day though, and they didn’t have shower access. Recommend sleeper class if you can do it. We took two dogs and two cats with us. The staff was great about it and we could access baggage every 8 hours to take the dogs out to pee. The pets were relaxed the whole trip, and the staff kept the entire car heated. This was in late October.

I did this trip when I was 5 years old , I’m 55 now and one of the most memorable trips of my life ! My parent and I had our own room with lavatory. I remember the porter coming at night to prepare the beds. The sky view cars where amazing to sit and take in this very flat country until you hit the Rockies. It’s good to see it’s back in operation. A must for all Canadians.

I don’t know how old this tape is, but those cars look like what they used for the Ocean route back in the 80’s-90’s My daughter and I did that route from Halifax to Montreal for 10 years 4 times a year. It was a great for small children because they had child programs like , movies, crafts, snacks, for free. Miss those years. ☺️

I done that journey several years ago. Had a single sleeper cabin. Had to pull the bed up to get to the toilet in the night! Job sleeping on it at night. The food in the restaurant is very good. You get called to meals and very do often have to put clocks and watches back one hour. I thoroughly recommend this trip.

I've taken this trip twice. Once going from Vancouver to Toronto in the summer of 1982, the other time going back the other way but at the height of winter in 1993 (when the fare is almost half price). On the summer trip they still used a car at the end, what you call the Park car in this video, that had an outside platform big enough for a couple of seats. It's too bad they don't use those cars now. Sitting at the back watching Winnipeg recede as the sunset was one of the best memories of my life.

An excellent video - thanks for posting it! I took this trip in 2013 and highly recommend it. I had a Sleeper Plus compartment (it's bigger than it looks in the video) which was very comfortable. The food was excellent; I met and enjoyed the company of some wonderful people, both crew and passengers, and experienced some of the most amazing scenery in the world. A vacation in itself, I hope to make the trip again some day (if the pandemic subsides), and I encourage anybody who's considering it to go for it - it's unforgettable!

As a kid in the 1960’s, when trains were more affordable, my family made this trip three times and back. Back then, CN covered most of this route, starting in Montreal ( where we lived), and traversing through Algonquin Park to Ottawa, Pembroke, North Bay, and then to Capreol, where we joined with another train from Toronto. The rest of the route is the same. So now it seems that the CP cars are used along most of the old CN route. Still, with the changes, this video brought back such memories for me. I was so lucky to travel this way as a kid, and also twice by train to PEI. Great times!
