Thank you, Johnny. Lovely to see the lights, although I prefer the Hazelton Lanes of days gone by, when you could skate inside, then grab a hot chocolate at the little cafe. I think the ROM has no money, so no lights for the holidays. (The world is 6,000 years old, haven't you heard?!! And probably flat, to boot!). Looking forward to seeing more of the lights around town. Cheers!

Love the channel, never been to Toronto but it seems like an interesting place. However, I do feel like it has a long way to go and that its still pretty far from being a "world-class city" (I dont mean not a world class place to live mind you, obviously Toronto is up there with the best in that regard). A great city is alot more than alot of people and big buildings. From what I get from these videos is that Toronto... cant really put my finger on it, but it feels like its something between a city and a suburb. Now this is not the only North American city that suffers from this. L.A. which i do know quite well has this problem too, as many other car centic North American cities. Now this has a couple of reasons in my opinion. First and foremost its of course completely developed with the car in mind. All these huge intersecting roads prevent that real inner city feeling. Secondly its perhaps the climate. Which such a large part of the year being cold and wet or snowy, its harder for city life to occur. Last of all and perhaps most importantly, it doenst have an old town like Montreal for example that gives the city a more European feel. A possible solution for this is to simply reduce the amout of roads in the center. There are many ways to do this but an interesting one is creating "superblocks". Instead of having roads around a single block, have roads around 4 or even 9 blocks and pedestrianize the roads within the superblock. Now you could still run street cars through it or bike lanes, in Amsterdam thats really common, as long as you get rid of the cars. You could plant big trees instead, allow restaurants to have (covered) outdoor seating. Maybe add a fountain, a statue or some other art installation in central crossing of the superblock... You get the idea. Im sure Toronto does have some places like this and its not all bad, but it clearly needs more to get it to the next level. You could even cover the entire superblock with a roof to create a giant arcade, dunno, get creative. Its all about creating a lively, more pedestrian friendy enviroment where you dont have to walk along side major roads with lots of traffic and having your path blocked by crossings wih lenghty traffic light waits. It would also make the city much more tourism friendly and potentially make it a more desirable destination for city trips.

Hey Sander, you kinda nailed it. The city is in fact extremely aware of this and that is why city planning initiatives are focusing on reducing car-dependence, increasing public transit and walkability and building neighbourhoods that are more urban and pedestrian-oriented and vibrant. This is primary going to be around future planned transit stations and is called ‘Transit Oriented Growth’ as well as densifying streets currently zoned for single family homes. For some of Toronto’s future developments there is a massive pedestrian only street being planned in the north of the city (Downsview) as well as mid-block connections akin to what you see in European streets. You also will see this in the massive East Harbour site, a new employment district being planned in the east end and the massive 2150 lakeshore Blvd site that is the spitting image of Europe imo. this aligns with the govt of Canada 15-min neighbourhood endorsement. Similarly, in Toronto’s suburbs like Vaughan or Brampton, there are serious planning initiatives to build pedestrian connections and densify/infill to ensure that people’s primary node of getting around is walking, cycling or transit as well as investing in Arts/culture industries and futurist and iconic design to give a more wordly feel. The latter being Brampton.

@@torink8229 It just feels a bit frustrating how scared some cities seem in really pressing forward. Maybe it's the politicians not wanting to piss off voters who get stuck in traffic and blame them. Maybe it's just the North American mindset of wanting alot of personal space, big car, big detached house, big parking lots, all that. I always think about 5th avenue in New York. Ban cars for the entire length, maybe add a streetcar or a dedicated cycling lane. Plant big trees the entire length. Add park benches. Have cafes spill out onto the pavement with big Paris style terasses... You'll have a truly world class shopping street right there. I dunno, maybe I'm too idealistic. I mean, there is the homeless population too, streets like that will probably work like a magnet for all types of unsavory business. But then again, it's also kinda defeatist to let that issue dictate your city design.

Interesting observations. I would argue that aside from NYC every other city in NA has the same faults but to an even greater degree. Cheers

@@JohnnyStrides Well yes sadly for the most part. There are some exceptions like Montreal, Vancouver seems a bit more lively as well and in the US cities like New Orleans, possibly San Francisco and perhaps Boston which did a great job putting that awful highway in the city centre underground. I do expect Canada to move forward quite quicker that the US considering creating more livable city centres. There just seems more political will to do so and they suffer considerably less from the homelessness issues, with all the tents and whatnot on the sidewalks in the downtown areas. Not Just Bikes is a great KZbin channel by a Canadian guy who moved to Amsterdam and has some really strong opinions on cars dominating NA cities. Thanks for showing us all the work that's being done in Toronto! Keep it up!
