These bikes look great, but I think I'll stick with the XR250R! Doing an engine rebuild, even once a year, is just too costly. The old XR engines go for years and then only need a piston and rings, which is not very expensive. Superb review by the way! All your reviews are excellent.

Great review. Just the info I was looking for on the crf250x, as I was thinking of replacing my old dr350 that I've been riding for the last 17 years with one. My wife would kill me putting that much into maintenance and doesn't sound like it would suit the slow technical riding I do in Colorado. Hello, I'm George and a 250X owner. My first Honda and first experience with SOHC. I just finished the valve job converting to steel so hopefully lasts longer than 20 hours. Previous owner didn't understand the importance of a clean air filter that is correctly sealed. I have grown to really like it I can feel the bike is really close to what I'm looking for on power but something you mentioned might help get it. I rebuilt the carb last year trying to fix my rough idle and hard starting problem. (LOL little did I know that soon came a valve job) Well during re-assembly I went with the stock position on the clip because no other mods have been made? I also stuck with stock jet. I also know exactly what I'm doing tomorrow! Great Video!

I have to disagree about reliability. 2004-2006 bikes had reliability problems. Honda made cam and valve changes. After 2007 the bikes became very reliable with routine maintenance, presuming you haven't bought one ragged out when you got it. Change the oil a LOT and keep your air filter clean. Stay out of the rev limiter. No problems. I think you do the bike a disservice in your evaluation, though I understand you are recounting your own experiences. I have ridden a 2007 for 3 years with no issues at all. It has shined on Rocky Mountain trails, held its own on a MX track, and struggled on eastern US twisty trails. I think it's a great bike overall, and an absolutely excellent western US trail bike.

I own a 2007 250x and 2009 230F. Both have been rock solid reliable. 230F has reworked suspension and carb work. Different bikes for different uses. I ride all over the country. Tight, twisty eastern trails = the 230F w/o question. Rocky Mountains and high desert = 250x. Plush suspension and lots of power. May be the perfect mountain bike. I also own a KDX220 and find it a great compromise between the two. I am 5'11" and 185 lbs. If you are taller than 6' go with the 250x. If you are under 5'7" go with the 230F. If you have $5k to spend and want a "perfect" bike let Jeff Fredette build you a KDX220. Love all three bikes but the Fredette KDX is beyond compare and the sweetest bike I have owned (I'm 67 with 52 years in the saddle). Lots of seat time on all but Overall the KDX is superb. Better than $9k KTM's by far. Just my opinion fellas.

I'm curious why there is not a titanium frame option available on all the CRF lime up from the 50cc on up... The simplicity and reliability of the old XRs are real... Can't believe Honda stopped the model presence in the USA. CRFs just got fuel injection and have electric start aside from the little 50cc. Honda acts like good suspension and light weight bikes don't matter for the trail bike line up. And why don't all the CRF at least come with quick plug and play for a head light and brake light for good night time trail capabilities. And the rear fender pouch is classic XR which the new trail bike CRFs did not carry over... What a shame... And last the quick airfilter access was also key to XR fans which was not carried over to the CRF trail bike line up...

Jim, do you think you could make a slightly more in-depth guide to uncorking this bike, or give a link to one? I've been considering one of these for quite a while to replace my ancient XR200R and I don't really do all that much technical low-RPM riding so I think it would be a fine bike.

+Jack Parker there are plenty of really great instructions out there. I just wanted to show whats involved. Just search for 250x CCC mods and Google will give you a huge list of great resources :)

Jack, did one a few weeks back, skipped the pink wire mod, but did most of the rest. Here's the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqCnlImvm6d5nZo

I’m looking to upgrade from my first bike (A CRF 150r small wheel) because it’s just too small. I’m 6’0 at 150 lbs which is 30 lbs over the weight limit and I can barely even fit on it. Would you recommend this for an intermediate rider/ second bike? Or is there a better Honda I should shoot for? I have my own trails which are pretty bumpy and windy so I’ll definitely need something cushy in suspension but not too powerful. Thanks a lot for reading 🤙

Which other bikes are better to have in terms of maintenance costs? I looking to get one CRF 250 R or X from 2006 to 2011. I currently own a CRF230F 2008, but I want something more powerfull and better equiped (suspensions)... (I will not sell my CRF230F)

On later model year bikes the needle isn't adjustable (1 clip slot only) and requires to replace to a different needle altogether.
