Plain and simple: If a game explicitly refuses to support Linux, or if a kernel level anti-cheat is required, Then I'm no longer going to support that game. Kernel-level anticheat is just malware. One of the biggest if not the biggest reason why people switch from Windows to Linux is privacy and security; you can't have a nice secure Linux system with a rootkit on it. Good riddance, Apex. Linux not supporting unacceptable standards is not a failure of Linux, it's a failure of the industries that push anti-consumer technologies. People should be able to use Linux for their daily driver machine with all their personal stuff AND their gaming stuff, and dual booting makes no sense for privacy when you still have all the same SSDs installed. Accepting this argument that kernel-level anticheat is the answer to cheating is like believing drug prohibition stops people from doing drugs.

@@thatoneannoyingtornadosire8755 It's all about upholding this myth that more control over the user's computer and their data means less cheating. Anticheat can be handled server-side and it doesn't even require machine learning, although that would help a lot. So much of it is mere statistical analysis, you don't need a rootkit running on players' PCs in order to determine that the guy whose cursor instantaneously flicks to head hitboxes and hits them 100% of the time, hitting heads the instant a single pixel comes around a corner, is in fact cheating.

Except, it does dramatically reduce the number of cheaters in your game. Valorant has significantly fewer cheaters than CS. Cause valves anti cheat is shit and Riots is actually does something. That isn’t really arguable. It might be “ anti consumer” in your eyes. But it is providing a service the consumer wants. A competitive game with noticeably fewer cheaters in it. I am absolutely willing to play a game with Kernel level anti cheat to play a competitive game that is actually competitive. I can isolate that system in other ways.

@tauon_ 19 күн бұрын
@@hastyscorpion you don't need kernel-level or even client-side (although this is better, see vac and warden) anticheat to ban cheaters though. kernel level anticheat is pointless, as cheaters can always go one level higher. for instance, we are already seeing UEFI based cheat programmes that auto-inject into games, and the kernel can't see anything wrong because the cheat is neither kernel level nor a program.

It reminds me of what happened with Virtual Reality in the early-to-mid-1990s. The technology was hyped in films and media making it look like it was capable of much more than it actually was at the time, so when people saw real VR in action they were terribly disappointed and interest evaporated. It's only recently that the public became interested again, despite computer power being up to the task 20 years ago. Now, with computer power already in place, it's even easier for marketing to over-hype A.I. As a side note: last year all of the e-learning voiceover work disappeared because companies wanted to use A.I. generated text-to-speech. They quickly realised how bad it was, and returned to hiring voiceover artists. The difference however was that they wanted real people quality at A.I. costs! The real villain in the A.I. saga is greedy companies' implementation of A.I. and not the technology itself.

Their Anti-Cheat arguments are really bad. First of all, lots of online games, including competitive ones, work on Linux just fine. And in most of them cheating isn't an issue. And second of all, anti-cheat checks do not belong on the client at all. This is like making payment processing client-side, then expecting the OS to grant you kernel-level permissions to prevent faking transactions and giving yourself free DLCs. I mean, hello? All this stuff makes me believe the theory that Microsoft is forcing these game publishers to kill Linux support.

People keep talking about the cheating narrative in the Apex story but i'm willing to bet their reason for dropping Linux support had nothing to do with cheating. EA has been hemorrhaging money, unsurprising since they haven't had a good release in 8 years now, so they're engaging in cost cutting measures. Switching BFV and BF1 to EA anti-cheat wasn't about stopping cheaters, it was about eliminating Fair Fight, which is server side and expensive to maintain. Likewise they dropped Linux support because they didn't want to pay people to maintain proton and update EAC on Linux, more than likely they did a cost analysis and determined Linux players weren't buying skins. Of course a multi-billion dollar company saying they can't afford to patch a game sounds lame so they concocted this "Linux users are all cheaters!" story as a CYOA and a way to generate goodwill, since they've spent the last year making the game into utter garbage. The strategy didn't really work and they're currently getting review bombed on steam.

My hunch on the Apex story is that this is a machine masquerading as Linux. I've been doing a lot of research into the cheating tool space, and I have yet to see anything that actually runs on Linux. The real long-term sustainable solution here is moving anti-cheat away from the user side and onto the server host side because that way you can ensure it's not being tampered with. But I don't see that happening before it's cheaper for these companies to use invasive chroma level anti-cheat. And in that reality I would probably support a steam kernel module or a proton kernel module that allowed a anti-cheat system to perform kernel attestation or kernel testing.

12:30 that's the entire point. The goal is clearly to make people feel like Windows is their only choice for gaming. Wonder who benefits from that idea... It won't do a single thing to stop cheaters but it gives them a boogeyman to compare to Windows. If there really was a surefire way to stop cheaters then developers would've done it ages ago. It would be great for their customers and their bottom line. The fact that they haven't is proof that they can't and are just looking for somewhere to pin the blame.

Outside of gaming, what is one example of client-side validation of the protocol? Luckily your game isn't worth accepting that, none of them are.

It's so bad so often, it's like a troll or saboteour, the stuff looks (only looks) fine and is 'nice' and 'polite' (in that faux polite way), but it's often wrong: movie and game plots of popular stuff, Arabic and Spanish (so big ones, not some niche languages), C and Python code (again - not niche tech), and from more niche stuff: Pascal code (I ask about FPC, it gives me Delphi answers).

It's ironic when Linus bashes AI when the Linux Foundation has put over $250,000,000 into AI projects. I know he's not the guy who decides where money goes (that's largely up to the big donors, which is another issue in itself) but it pains me to see so much Linux funding being funneled into a bunch of planet-burning ponzi schemes that were _always_ going to be best supported under linux because of their reliance on server/high perf. computing which is _dominated_ by Linux.

I do understand that the client-side anti-cheat strategy EA and others use have a problem with Proton. I would still give EA management crap for this. You can also fix cheating via community run servers or server-side anti-cheat. But who am I anyway. I use anti-cheat software as an indicator that the game is too competitive to play for me. Playing those games doesn't do me any good anyway even if their publishers were more chill
@Todd_Coward
@Todd_Coward 18 күн бұрын
This whole kernel level thing is just developers trying to cut costs, it really has nothing to do with stopping cheating. EA used to pay for Fair Fight, and it was fairly effective when used in conjunction with traditional anti-cheat solutions, but it was expensive to maintain. Kernel level anti-cheats actually generate money, because they have ring 0 access you can datamine your users. EA anti-cheat can see pretty much everything going on in your computer from what programs you run, file names, even web searches. That info gets sent back and they can build a portfolio of their users for market research purposes. It's totally unethical, but all of this allowed in the TOS people mindlessly scroll past so they can play their games.

If Valve makes a kernel-level anti-cheat, I want it to be an "opt-in" sort of thing, AND for distros to not install by default. I imagine Valve would want to do it, if they want to stay competitive against Windows handhelds It'd be great, if it's open source, too so that, while bad hackers may take advantage of it, good hackers can help improve on it. On regular Linux, I would love it if there's a flag that I can use to disable it at boot time with a flag. Others may not use it, but it'd be nice to have, especially if it decides to act up

It's not about cheating. It's not our job to evangelize in that way. The real issue is that the GPL doesn't fit into their world. There's no "LinuxOS" to trade lawyers with and write user-carving partnerships with. Valve has done interesting things hacking around this capitalism problem, but they'll always be trying to route around roadblocks, because the GPL has user-freedom features which the industry believes need to be disabled, so that they can make user-hostile license agreements with each other, and carve the market. It's payola, and there's no one to play ball on the LInux side (by design).
