It was technically the best show on cartoon network of its time, because Cartoon Network wasn't really making cartoons at that time, at least not as much as you'd expect from a channel called CARTOON NETWORK. Total Drama was the rare show for me that was guilty pleasure at first, but then I realized how well the 3rd season was written and the high prod value considering they had a freakin musical in EVERY episode. Like that requires WAY more talent than an average cartoon episode. And yes the design and animation of Total Drama is as low as you can get with the Canadian budgets, but something nostalgic of the HANNA BARBERA type shows made me hooked for all seasons, even the shitty ones in later years. 6:41 The worst part about this elimination is that Tyler *completed his challenge.* He had to stay in a chicken pen for a certain amount of time, and although he was terrified and in the fetal position, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. Why didn't he get a point for that? Same reason as Harold, which I assume is that the writers were biased towards the Screaming Gophers
@midnalazuli7932 жыл бұрын
In regards to Tyler being eliminated instead of Courtney, I don’t think it was solely because of his failure to complete his task in the challenge. Even though her teammates didn’t always approve of Courtney’s tactics, they were often effective, whereas Tyler’s physical ineptness made him complete deadweight. On top of that, Tyler wasn’t as socially integrated into the team as Courtney was. DJ, Duncan, and Geoff were all best friends, and Courtney was close with Bridgette, and all five of them pretty much made up the “in-crowd” of the Bass. The person who Tyler was the closest to was Lindsay, who was on the other team. Harold and Sadie were outcasts too, but Harold at least proved his worth to the team, almost single-handedly winning the first two challenges, and Sadie also managed to score one of their only three points in the challenge, while Tyler pretty much always failed to impress in every challenge he competed in.

Considering the additions in RotI and PI, it was a really good move to transition to beyond the Survivor spoof for The Ridonculous Race. PI showed how bottom of the barrel the teen archetypes had gotten when one of them was LARPer who can’t separate fantasy from reality, one was Disney Princess and one was female Owen without the charm, so opening up to include adults as contestants made a massive difference.

Sky, Dave and Jasmine were some of the only not heightened stereotype characters on PI and out of them only Jasmine wound up being sympathetic by the end. I’d use the term archetype rather than stereotype because archetype is a starting point. Characters do show traits not always associated with their outward appearance, like Lindsey being smarter than people give her dumb blonde persona credit for. Make no mistake, she does play into it often enough (particularly when it comes to Tyler, at one stage her not remembering his name right was a running joke) but does have points where she subverts it such as her mechanical skills or being the one to solve to murder mystery in the Action season. Plus her calling out Heather is legendary.

The "almost" in the reality show bit in your description is actually perhaps the thing that saves this show in the end. It leads to an odd niche where it can get the same sort of... whatever that Reality TV shows get you, except that being animated and allowed to go beyond all reasonable safety (in a world that is SUPPOSEDLY fairly grounded) gets you a setting that is zany and exaggerated as well. It can appeal to a cartoon lover who thinks Reality TV is dumb... because it can make use of the fact that it is, in fact, a cartoon to basically bypass the "Reality" part of "Reality TV" by enough to make it more interesting, or at the very least, more entertaining.

One thing I think you failed to mention was Izzy & LeShawna's absence in the bike racing challenge in episode 18. That one detail has always bugged me because it shouldn't make sense. Chris does ask where they are, but shruggs it off like, "Oh well, their loss." So, can anyone be absent from challenges and not get booted? I always thought you have to compete in all challenges, otherwise you'd be kicked out. And if yes, then why don't the rest of the challengers do it? Granted, other examples like this has been done, like the dodgeball challenge where Noah doesn't compete at all, but he got eliminated in the end so it's fine, or in challenges like the talent show, trust, or extreme challenges, not every challenger competed, but for those who did, they were competing for their team, so that also gets a pass, but my point is everyone post merge all competed in their challenges, except in episode 18, because they were fighting for themselves by that point. What are the rules for competing in challenges, is what I'm trying to ask.

But i'd argue that a new project needs more than one video to kick off. Very suspicious I tell ya. 2: I think Ezekiel is overhated these days. He was rather sheltered at home, being home schooled and all, so it makes sense why he’s like that (it could be way worst tho). When Total Drama first came to Cartoon Network, I got pretty excited. First of all, it was great to see Cartoon Network aim for an older audience, even if the show was made by a different country altogether. There was no shortage of iconic characters. It didn't matter if they were male or female, nor did it matter if we're talking about the Screaming Gophers or the Killer Bass, there was something each one had to remember him or her for. It wasn't just the characters that were memorable, as I still find myself quoting this show to this day.

Personally I enjoy your style of commentary Mr. Enter, even if you rag on a show that I like, I still find it interesting to see someone point out the flaws in the episodes/storylines. I will never understand why people have such a problem with differing opinions, but I hope whatever changes you decide to make you stay true to your self.

Or how Owen making it to the final 2 didn’t make sense. I mean I don’t dislike Owen but seeing him survive for that long was pretty illogical

@@marlom7882 The Gophers should have eliminated Heather on the food challenge, and used any remaining bad luck to eliminate Beth. I can't believe me as like a 10 year old came up with that solution back in the day. Lol

When I was a stupid kid, I think this show somehow tricked me into thinking it was actual reality TV.

I caught every episode of Total Drama Island back when I was in middle school. I got home and watched the new episode then immediately watched wrestling afterwards. I remember those days so clearly because I was enjoying myself so so much. The first season is still my favorite and I like the other seasons to different degrees, but Pahkitew Island is actually my 2nd favorite season, I really enjoy the new cast and the story of that season. Looking forward to seeing what you think about it when and if you get to it.

I remember being obsessed with TDI as a kid! Teletoon (Canadian cartoon TV channel) always aired the episodes in order and would play the latest episode several times a day for kids to keep up. They even would air the previous episode some time before the new one so that kids could keep up. Which is something they still do to this day when it comes to shows with on going plots last time I checked!

I remember watching Total Drama a bit as a kid and liking it. I liked it enough that during World Tour, I actually did tune into the episodes, and also ended up watching the later episodes uploaded to KZbin recorded from Canadian airings. I loved finding that as a kid. I liked the first 3 seasons overall quite a bit. Revenge of the Island was harder to keep my interest though. I stopped watching around the middle of the season because I just didn't find it engaging. I was getting most of my cartoons at that time with next day video on demand on the cable box when I ate breakfast in the mornings, and I often chose to watch old episodes of Dexter's Lab put on there instead. VOD wasn't perfect (and was sorta glitchy at times), but it was nice to have back when streaming wasn't as robust as it is today considering I would have rather watched preschool shows or the news than whatever was on Cartoon Network or anything.

Revenge of the island is interesting, because the show is kind of a victim of power creep, where challenges just get crazier and more sadistic, and it would have felt wrong to see these characters we've come to love get "POW torture camp" challenges, but doing it to characters we don't care about is fine.

A very fair review, I'd say. Owen and Ezekiel are two of my favorites, so your hatred to them was hurtful, but I get it. And, while Island is good, I would say World Tour, Pahkitew, and even the spin-off The Ridonculous Race are all better. So, hopefully you get to them!
