When they blew up the building? Yeah… they blew up the building. And drove a truck off a bridge, jumped a motorcycle off a ledge, flew a helicopter under an overpass… All practical effects. The CG was reserved for the T-1000 effects, and most everything else really happened. Edit- Also, the hospital cop and Linda Hamilton really had identical twins, so even the face-to-face doubles are practical and not CGI.

Well, they didn't quite blow up the building, what you're seeing is a bunch of oil drums filled with gasoline and debris with explosive charges at the bottom being fired out of all the windows on that floor.
@ryanclark6402
@ryanclark6402 2 жыл бұрын
@@CruelestChris OK, so “blew up the building” is a tad hyperbolic. I’m aware of how movie pyrotechnics work and that vaporized, ignited gasoline is neither a low nor high explosive but merely an incendiary substance. My original point was that this footage was achieved practically, in full scale, live to film, versus CGI or some kind of model miniature/matte process. Yeah, technically it’s not an “explosion,” but don’t tell me every crew member didn’t use that word when describing their day to their significant others…

Yes they used some CG for the T-1000, but most of the effects with it were actually practical. They only used CG to clean up the practical effects and to create scenes that were physically impossible to make with practical effects. This and Jurassic Park are why I believe CG should be used to complement practical effects not replace them.

Great to see you getting to Terminator 2, Jen! 😄The plot for Terminator 2 was actually what James Cameron had originally wanted to do in the first Terminator movie, but lacked the technology to realize it on screen. Also, yes, composer Brad Fiedel returned to do the music for Terminator 2 after having worked on the first Terminator movie. He described his "metallic-sounding" score as being the "beating heart" of the Terminator. Feidel also composed the music for Fright Night, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and another James Cameron action film, True Lies, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, which I hope you check out.

"Tell me how they filmed that helicopter scene where it bashes into the back of the vehicle." The final highway chase was filmed along the Terminal Island Freeway near Long Beach, of which a 2.5-mile stretch was shut nightly for two weeks. The idea of flying the Bell Jet Ranger under the overpass was all James Cameron’s idea because of course it was. Cameron has made a career out of being an “all or nothing” kind of director, and his approach to this helicopter stunt was no different. In fact, storyboards indicate that originally, believe it or not, the entire chase scene was going to take place in a tunnel with the use of miniatures. When this proved unfeasible, the location was moved to the Long Beach freeway, and Cameron’s big dream of a tunnel chase was relegated to the overpass stunt. The stunt was performed by Charles A. “Chuck” Tamburro, a veteran stunt pilot as well as an actual Vietnam veteran.

Hi Jen! Some thoughts/recommendations; - Ignore all the 'Terminator' films beyond this one, with the possible exception of 'Dark Fate' (Mr. Camron had nothing to do with the franchise beyond this film, and 'Dark Fate' acts at a (sort of) sequel to 'Judgement Day). - You may want to consider the short-lived television series 'Terminator - The Sarah Conner Chronicles', as it continues the story (again, sort of). You might also consider Mr. Camron's first foray into television, 'Dark Angel'. - You've seen 'The Abyss'. You really (REALLY) need to see the documentary 'Under Pressure - Making "The Abyss" ', if not for the channel, for your own information/enjoyment. - Oh, and while I have your attention, please consider 'The Wizard of Speed and Time' (1979 (3 minutes), and 1988 (90 minutes)).

Avoid all the sequels after this and just pretend it ended here.

The field of computer graphics was reaching a point in the late 80s / early 90s where it was able to go beyond crude wireframe models (such as the schematic of the Death Star shown on the screens in Star Wars) or low poly cartoonish angular shapes (e.g. Dire Straits' Money for Nothing music video) but it was still not able to create photorealistic textures of everyday materials, such as cloth or skin. That is why lots of CGI from this era uses chrome-like reflective surfaces (e.g. this, the Abyss, Flight of the Navigator.) From a CGI standpoint, a mirrored surface is actually quite straightforward to render, because as long as you have images of all the surroundings, it can just distort and transform those as reflections. Modeling something like clothing or skin requires a lot more effort (simulating shadows, fine surface details and imperfections, etc.) to look like a real world object. Skin and hair are notoriously difficult, which is why it would be many years until lifelike CGI of actual people became possible, and some would say it's still not quite there. That's why you have stuff like 1995's Toy Story which was a generation ahead and pushing the state of the art and was still only attempting to model materials like smooth plastic. So that's how computer technology led to the design of the T-1000, because Cameron was very aware of these realities when designing the film. But there were still some practical effects. The scene where the T1000 reassembles itself as it reheats was all practical, literally just a dude with a hairdryer blowing little blobs of mercury metal along a flat surface. The rest of the Terminator sequels are a blight on the world. T2 ended with such a great resolution (the nuclear war is averted, Skynet does not come to pass) that you can imagine it is very difficult to tell a compelling story in this universe that doesn't somehow undo the sacrifices made by the characters in T1 and T2. There's also the problem of actor availability, like what do you do if you want to tell a story in this world but you don't have a key character? Also, there's the issue of one-ups-manship. There is this constant need in the mind of a hack screenwriter to take what has been done and repeat it but bigger and better. Except it's never better, it's always just dumber. It's what ruins most sequels. Cameron had the rare ability to make the "bigger and better" choices of T2 make sense in terms of the story, world, and characters, without going to excess. Needless to say, I think you'll be happier holding on to T2's fantastic ending as the way the series ended. But I understand if curiosity compels you, just don't expect anything nearly as great as T2.

I’ve seen another reactor think the T1000 was the good guy up until he walks out of the flames and reform into the street cop persona. I think the thing some forget is the Terminator doesn’t really do fiendish plans. And it sorta seemed like Jen thought Arny was trying to take John somewhere and then terminate him, and not that if he were there to unalive the kid he would’ve just done it.. The thing I would’ve probably questioned though, is why is the Cop not yelling at John to stop, or saying something like, “I’m here to save you!!” But I honestly think Jen’s reaction is the reaction you’re supposed to have, up until the T101/800 exposits that it was sent to protect John by John’s future self..

One of the best things about this movie is how Cameron didn't reveal Arnold was GOOD until he protected John from the bullets. And I thought you might say, "Hmmm???," but you stayed true to the Arnold-bad idea. So much fun to see reactors experience this. Wasn't it great when the condescending, yawning psychologist watched the liquid-metal terminator walk right through the bars, dropping the syringe cap out of his mouth? Believe Sarah now, jerk? Note: Linda Hamilton worked out with Arnold to "get in shape" as the "new Sarah Connor.";) There are more "Terminator" movies, but nowhere near as good as the original and "Judgment Day." Hi Jen ! Actually Terminator 2 : Judgement Day is actually not a sequel of The Terminator film At first, James Cameron (who created the Terminator concept, the screenplay, who produced the film and directed it) didn't have the budget to do what he had in mind, so he had to modify the scenario to reduce the cost ... And with the success of the 1st Terminator, he earned a lot of money and he decided to do a second one (direction, scenario, production) as a kind of corrected version of the 1st, truer to what he had in mind for the 1st at the very beginning. There was not supposed to be a Terminator 3, 4, 5 or 6, James Cameron did not want it and he officially and strongly criticized the 3rd Terminator in the press, he did not produce it or written, nor produced. So the REAL story of TERMINATOR, the most faithful to what James Cameron had in mind from the start, is Terminator 2, but Terminator 2 could never have existed without the first Terminator film He wanted two Terminators in the 1st film : one mechanical and and one in liquid metal (but the CGI effects were too expensive at the time ... In 1984, effects made by computer were extremely rare and very expensive ... That's why special effects in the 80's movies were not using CGI) and even the war zone in the future (in the 1st Terminator) was not exactly like James Cameron wanted it to be. The 2nd Terminator film is a remake and that's why we find so many similarities from the 1st film in the second one (the Terminator saw naked by people, and is laughed about his nakedness, the fact which one is the good one which one is the bad guy, the fact the fight opposes it to a thiner adversary, the Terminator thrown though a window, the car chase in the highway, the fact Sarah Connors has been injured on the leg, the factory where it all ends, the conclusion on a lonely road), the but with some adjustments to give it a commercial reason to be, this is why some elements in the second film were the next steps of the 1st one... But the Terrminator 2 film is the first one improved ... James Cameron didn't want to start a franchise ... That was not the aim

The Terminator (1984) was kind of a niche movie when it was released (in a year PACKED with science fiction releases like 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Star Trek III, Ghostbusters, Buckaroo Banzai, the 1984 version of Orwell's 1984, the list goes on and on). Though well regarded on release, it was a sleeper hit inasmuch as it really found its audience on cable TV and video rentals. So by the time the sequel, T2, was released, seven years later, it was this mega gigantic event that everyone dropped everything to go see in its first weekend, a true phenomenon. And of course it made a TON of money, look at Titanic's budget, which I'm sure it helped justify, or maybe even directly finance. Have to add another shout-out to Gale Anne Hurd, who co produced Aliens, Abyss, and this Movie. Sarah Connor and Ripley owe so much to that woman's mind. Gale Anne Hurd went on to do many more worthy science fiction movies with other collaborators than James Cameron. Hurd's contributions are far too often overlooked in discussions like these, which is an injustice.

Fun Fact: Terminator 2: Judgment Day, almost didn't get made. James Cameron had wanted to continue the story even as they were making the first film, but his work on Aliens and The Abyss delayed work on a sequel. Also, Cameron and Schwarzenegger did not want to work with Hemdale Film Corporation again, the studio that made the first film, after its co-founder attempted to alter the end of the first Terminator without Cameron's permission(which nearly led them to blows). When Hemdale Film Corporation began struggling financially, Schwarzenegger went to Carolco Pictures(having worked with them on Total Recall) and convinced them to buy the rights to The Terminator. Carolco's founders, Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna(who produced the Rambo films) agreed, and bought the rights, paying $10 million to Hemdale and $5 million to Cameron's ex-wife, Gale Anne Hurd, who also partially owned the rights to The Terminator and stayed on as executive producer for the sequel.
