Way back in April I bought 5 B52 flytraps, 1 dente, and about 3 king Henry’s. Now in November just before dormancy I have at least 10 of every cultivar. It’s absolutely insane how invasive these plants can be. If it weren’t for their specific soil and water they’d be everywhere in America for sure

@@TheFlytrapGarden back when I was a kid it turns out the only thing that kept killing these plants was acclimation. I’d never acclimate them properly and once I got that down I was baffled at how I struggled growing carnivorous plants over one simple flaw.

@@bouncyblight2001 Hey, I'm having trouble acclimating my VFTs. Could you share some of your tips? Thanks
@bouncyblight2001
@bouncyblight2001 Жыл бұрын
@@accuratesoup3486 the first step is to take them outside for 1 hour for roughly 3 days, then 2 hours the next 3 days, then increase by one hour every week until they can stay outside forever. Venus flytraps are extremely hardy and can survive after all their leaves shed so if you want you can just rush it by just leaving it outside from the get go but I wouldn’t try that if you’re new to the hobby. After they’re acclimated it’s really just a matter of making sure there’s water in their trays. It’ll be self sustaining in its own pot when outdoors. Also during dormancy try not to water them too much because they’ll suffer from root rot. Although do make sure the soil is still wet. And be sure to bring them inside when below freezing. Happy growing, and if you ever want to try out nepenthes pitcher plants I’m growing those now too

Love this video. Learned quite a bit, and I definitely don't know it all. But just a piece of advice that I follow, I try to use all white pots to keep the temp down on the root zone. I'm worried the little plants roots will be very close to the walls of the pot and heat up much more in the smaller black pots. And if there is no problem, it was just my own thought on the subject that works for me. Can't wait to transplant some flytraps and use some of your techniques 🙏

Nice separation and new plants! How much time do you allow before making more plants? Like theoretically 6months, once a year or just watch? Where do baby plants come from, rhizomes shooting out? Any seeds? Nice video, great for me as a newbie carnivore grower! Thanks.
@TheFlytrapGarden
@TheFlytrapGarden Жыл бұрын
Thank you :) usually once a year, when they start growing again they may have 1 or 2 separations. Seeds come from the flower which pops up once a year and if it gets pollinated but it isn’t often advised to keep the flower on the plant. The best method is to watch and see if you get more plants in a season before you try separate anything out

@@TheFlytrapGarden OK, cool. Why is it advisable not to keep flower on VFT? Thanks.
@TheFlytrapGarden
@TheFlytrapGarden Жыл бұрын
The majority consensus is that it drains the plant of a lot of energy and this causes the plant to grow with less vigour. If a plant is grown with bad care, the flower, in that case, would cause the plant to die. However if you have an extremely vigorous plant and a colony of them, people often let them flower to collect some seed

My wife got me a VFT for my B-day because she knows how much I love them. I also have a sundew (Drosera capensis). I repotted both. The sundew I left with the soil in came with and simply added more moss to the bigger pot. It's growing beautifully. The VFT ... not so much. I had it for MONTHS in the little pot it arrived in and it was thriving wonderfully under the sun. Then, I followed these videos that show the person taking off all of the soil from the roots before repotting. In less than two weeks my beautiful VFT was dead. Not dormant. DEAD! It went from no less than 20 bright burgundy traps to every single one black and wilted down to the roots, which are also black now. Be careful following these videos.

Last year I got fascinated about these plants so did some research and went on a mad carnivorous plant buying spree at end of summer. Brought about 20 pitcher hybrids, 7 species of vsts and a sundew (which doesn't need dormancy so was indoors in winter and is now 4 plants :). My big pitchers were full outside, vsts and smaller pitchers in a coldframe over a cold uk winter. Every one of them survived and back to growing, but the bigger plants have really started new growth quickly :) Ive read links that say you should put carnivorous plants in darkness if needed during dormancy? How true is this? I only chopped off browning leaves in late winter, anything green then left as they still photosynthesis and energy gets stored in the rhizome for next season which I think is the best way of pruning, they don't get pruned in natural habbit? I water mine deionized water when got no rain water and they seem to love it. My medium is roughly Peat moss 60% Pearlite 25% 10% horological sand 5% Sphagnum moss
@TheFlytrapGarden
@TheFlytrapGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi Mate. I have never read of any carnivorous plant that needs full darkness for dormancy, perhaps the only one would be tuberous sundews if you were to remove them from soil during their summer dormancy but I don't think you've read about those just yet? Your cutting method seems good, only cut the pitchers off once they've gone completely brown as the bugs in the pitcher is still used until it has completely died back. Your soil also seems very good, generally 50 : 50 peat to perlite is what is recommended but that mix is very good too. You are doing an excellent job

A comment about terminology. What you have been calling leaf cuttings are not. They are leaf pullings - where you pull the entire leaf free from the rhizome.

Everyone carrying on about rincing roots off with tap water have no idea what they are talking about. The plant doesn't have time to absorb the tap water. You shouldn't water these plants with tap water as they stand in this water and if you use tap water minerals build up over time that will kill the plant. So please don't comment unless you know what you are actually saying.
