Had two total knee replacements in my early 70s and they came out wonderfully. Of course the post-op therapy hurts a lot for awhile but once its all done its a terrific outcome. Feel nothing, pain free, excellent movement, highly recommended.

I got my partial in 2009 and did well about 8 years. I then needed a total knee in 2017. The dr said it was a harder surgery. I was 43 when I got my total. In 1999 I had to get a tibial tubercle osteotomy because my patellar tendon shrunk and my knee cap fell down. Several docs saw my X-rays and had never seen this happen. I got four screws put in but when I had my partial or total they took them out. I’ve had a total of 11 surgeries on my RT knee. Last one was in July. I keep tearing my medial retinaculum. Last three open surgeries for that. Thanks for your videos. 💝 Victoria from Ohio

A meniscus replacement was invented in Israel over a decade ago. A trial has been done in the US with good outcomes. The Dr I visited about it was one that participated and indicated it might be approved soon in the US but that was almost 2 years ago. I was a candidate. Unfortunately you can't be bone on bone for too long. Because it's not yet available in the US yet and not approved I had to go with a TKR on one knee 6 weeks ago and the other will be done the end of this week. You can travel to Israel or Belgium and pay out of pocket at this point. Look up NuSurface for information. You Tube has a few Drs and patient interviews that have participated in the trial.

A friend just referred me to Talking With Docs, and I'm hooked. I had both knees TKR'd by Brad the left in Feb of 2014 and the right three months later in May. The quality of my life improved immeasurably. Plus, he and Paul are hilarious. AND, Brad played the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" for me in the OR as the drugs kicked in. Zero anxiety about the whole process, from initial diagnosis to recovery to back to normal life. Well, OK, physio wasn't always a walk in the park, pun intended.

When I first met my surgeon, he suggested a TKR. After the visit, I looked at my x-rays which clearly show bone on bone on the medial compartment, the lateral looked fine to me. So I sent an email to my surgeon asking if a partial knee replacement would be a good option for me. He wrote back saying that the lateral compartment was also diseased which I couldn't tell so I'm not a candidate for a partial. Always good to have an open dialog with your surgeon to make sure you understand why he has prescribed a specific surgical procedure. Two months out from my surgery, still in PT and continuing to make progress. Having so much fun, I've scheduled a surgical date next year to have a TKR for my left knee which is also bone on bone. Cheers!

I'm in the UK, it's a little different over here as you know. You get referred to a consultant and he will give you his recommendation. As a patient you tend to go with it. However, on the day of my partial knee surgery my consultant sat down with me and said, 'John, the plan is a partial, but with your permission if I believe a full is necessary are you happy with this'? Of course I agreed. I had the partial and now eight weeks in all I have is scar tissue pain which I can deal with and in time will pass. This may sound to others here a little hit and miss but not for me, I knew I was in good hands with a respected surgeon, who am I to question him?

It was the same situation for me. I was down for a partial but surgeon said he would make a decision on the day and would do a full knee if needed. I only had the medial side replaced and that was in June 2021 at age 76. Not had any problems with the replacement but had IT band problems which has restricted me much to my disappointment 🙋‍♀️🇬🇧

@@yorkshiregal Had my left done in January, again a partial. Have to say the healing process on this one is slower than the right. I realise each procedure outcomes are different, I'm sure with time the pain will subside. It does make me smile when I see all the KZbin knee replacement warriors down the gym or jogging up and down dale after 5 weeks.

@@minijms1 😂 agree with you there, one woman I spoke to said she was walking 4 miles a day after only 6 weeks. I thought where am I going wrong. Initially I was in a lot of pain for a few months, I had a lot of swelling and bruising but worked hard to get my range of motion. Was ok pottering around the house but as soon as I went out for walks on hard surface it was painful. I was so disappointed as expected to be able to walk at least a couple of miles a day once the knee was done after a decent recovery. I Had always been fit and was a dance teacher before I retired and walked 5-8 miles daily at one point. My consultant said I had been unlucky having the Iliotibial band syndrome, unfortunately an injection into the IT pocket didn’t work and I won’t take strong meds so just try and do what I can and take each day as it comes. Good luck with your second knee, no way would I have my other one done lol, now 78 will take my chances.

Great video! I had a partial medial knee replacement 20 months ago. The surgeon was great in explaining both the total and partial replacements. We both decided that a partial would be a good option for me. I still have some pain in the joint, but it's better than before surgery. Post surgery X-rays show no abnormalities in the prosthesis and I have full range of motion. The knee really feels weird when I kneel on it. I will see the surgeon in 3 weeks and see what's going on in the knee.

Great video! I met Dr. Joe Miller (Miller/Galante) in the early 80’s and we soon began doing about a hundred partial knee replacements each year. Surprisingly, we had patients of all sizes, weights, activity levels that went on to very long-term good to excellent results with their partial unicondylar knee replacements. For the “right” selection of patient: age, activity, joint involvement, etc…… a partial knee is superior. Wishing you all Health and Happiness for the New Year.

I got my patellofemoral done 5 weeks ago. I'm 63. No one here seems very familiar with it which made me nervous, but I've had pain under my patella for years and I just didn't want the TKR if it wasn't necessary (though I'm wondering if it's much harder than the patellofemoral - pretty challenging). So far so good - I'm walking a half mile at a time and ready to do more. Wondering how your surgery went.

A very senior Orthopedic Consulting consultant and Orthopaedic consultant had this very conversation over my knee yesterday in Salisbury Hospital UK yesterday. It was further complicated because the Senior Consulting Orthopedic Consultant also did an operation where the leg was broken and then realigned to make the patent walk on the outside of the knee joint. (I am currently having to wear a off set knee brace to knee me use the outside of my knee joint on my right knee. ) Together the 3 of us decided I need A TKR due to my age and CPPD. Without a diagnosis I have been suffering from CPPD for at least 5 years. I had been taking Naproxen for neck whiplash injuries for many years. Been hospitalised twice each time for a week then suffering from chronic acid reflux. A GP phones me up in December 2020 tells me to stop taking Naproxen. Following day abdomen feels so relaxed next day my neck locks up. Three week later mid morning my knees lock up. I exercise to free neck and knees up. (Foolish me) I tear my medial meniscus in both knees. 10th March 2022 I have my left knee replaced. Recovery does not go as planned. I make progress then set back. In this time my feet one at a time swell up then goes down and I lose toenails. Physiotherapist refers me back to my GP who refers me to the Urgent treatment center in Poole Hospital. CRP 160 and admitted to hospital. Who think I have a knee infection. I have extract from my knee and microbiologist can not grow anything. Few days later I have my knee washed out microbiologist can not grow anything from the washings. Kept in hospital for 2 weeks. On IV antibiotics. Discharged from hospital on Oral antibiotics for 6 weeks. In this 8 week period my CRP goes up and down. The day my antibiotics finish I have an appointment to see orthopedics in hospital again. I express a view that the antibiotics are not working. I am given another blood test CRP 180. I am admitted again. 3 days later I am diagnosed with CPPD prescribed Colchicine. and discharged, Colchicine Tablets make me feel a lot better. Have been on them for 4 months now my left knee swelling has been much reduced and I have almost got full knee movement in the left knee which was replaced last March. Now I am waiting for an appointment to replace my right knee. It's been a long painful haul.

If someone is becoming bowlegged, is there a specific degree of outward bend like let's say 5-10 deg that would indicate surgery needed?

No Tory. We have replaced knees with 35 degrees of bend. The indication for surgery is pain that can’t be controlled by other means. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and subscribing

I’ve had a nasty tibial plateau fracture 1.5 yrs ago.. meniscus and cartilage is toast on one side and towards the center. My Dr is now suggesting a total knee and another Dr thinks I should do a partial.. I’m honestly at a loss here🤦🏼‍♂️ really don’t know who I should believe or what to do🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

I had some severe trauma to my left knee in a car accident when I was 20. I had surgery to repair the knee, then an arthroscopy about a year later. Last year at 50, I experienced a tear, and had another arthroscopic surgery. I feel like I still have a tear, and now my right knee is giving me problems, in particular when sitting. Wondering how many arthroscopic surgeries my knee can tolerate?

Sorry Eileen we did. A partial knee replacement is appropriate when only one compartment is damaged. Usually the medial or inside one so the inner part of the shin bone and thigh bone are replaced with metal separated by a hard piece of plastic. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Doctors I had quite a difficulties in my left knee TKR, even after 18 months I have tightness around my knee. I have sciatic nerve problem. L-4 and L5 was infused, but after the TKR, left heel is numb and when Electromyography test was done showed that L-5 is pinched. A bit shocking as it was infused. I am suffering pain in my feet, heel and leg. I am so afraid for going for my 2nd right TKR soon. Seeing my Orthopedic surgeon in two months. Since my right knee has only pain in the inner side of my knee. Ask for a MRI and check with other options with him. I am almost 79 now!. Please advice so as from your video I feel that partial is not so successful. I watch your videos often after my TKR.Thank you 🙏

So it may be worth dealing with the issue than is likely coming from your back and causing the numbness before getting the second knee done. Partial knee replacement can be very successful in the right patient. Best of luck.

@@TalkingWithDocs let me beg you guys for another question please, when I went to the office, saw the PA and the x-ray showed loosening. I had the CT scan done, and it came back clean, as per the radiologist. I am yet to see the surgeon, is there a possibility that my knee is OK? Mind you, I’m in a lot of weight, bearing pain and off weight, bearing pain and swelling. Infection has been discarded. I just need to know if the x-ray shows loosening, and a CT scan doesn’t, where does that leave me ? I wish it was a way I could show you the picture, which I have.

Good evening I've been watching your videos and I appreciate all the information and your advice, my surgery is November 22. I'm kind of nervous about the pain I may have after I know everyone's pain tolerance is different. I'm trying not to stress out , I guess I have a hard time wrapping my mind around being up and walking right after surgery and dealing with pain I've shared with my surgeon I don't have a plan for care after and requested going to a rehab, he told me he'd see how I was after surgery, can I ask you both why he wouldn't agree to sending me there I have stairs in my home and steps going into my home I appreciate the video and if you have time to respond I'd appreciate it. Have a blessed Thanksgiving 🍂🦃

Hi Lori. Good luck Tuesday. Most patients are independent on day 1 with a walker. You will likely do some stairs with physio before you leave. You are slow but it is manageable. Many hospitals have very limited rehab capacity. Some patients do go to respite care. Slow and steady wins the race. Best of luck on Tuesday. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Thanks I had to get a second doctor's opinion for a tkr because of my age which I was 40 year's old. They said in 10 year's. With so much pain I'm in plus bone on bone even from my previous surgeries I had on my knee they don't want to replace it to soon. Plus I'm to young for it also they said. I'm counting down the year's on when I can get it done. 😂

*I got a very painful full knee replacement surgery last February '22 that I'm still struggling with pain and limited movement. Last week I realized that I most likely didn't even need it replaced. I got a bad hip replacement on the same leg in 2020 at the same hospital by a different Doctor and while I was going to see other doctors for my knee I mentioned that I had a painful hip from that replacement. Not one time did any of them say that my knee pain could have been related to my hip. They just said that since I had AVN in my hip that it must have moved to my knee.* *I had my hip revision at another hospital and the new surgeon pulled the old Stryker stem out of my leg with just his fingers. He said it looked like it had been that loose since the replacement 2 years prior. Needless to say, my knee hurt since then and I never connected the dots, I'm a dopey guy, not a Doctor.* *I am so mad right now.* 😕
