Legend, I fully agree with your assessment of this game being boring to anyone who isn't interested in WW1. I'm biased because I love WW1 more than any other European time era and have sunk probably over 70 hours into this mod. I don't see you coming back to it, but the mod can get really challenging and personally I think really fun. Russia in the war was actually a sleeping giant that took forever to mobilise, but once they did, they were endless. This mod does that perfectly. As the Germans, I managed to take Belgium, France, UK, Swiss, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. I reversed WW1 by holding the line against Russia while having a war of movement in the west. For all those countries I've taken, ever single western soldier I've killed, I've probably killed 60 or more Russians, they are absolutely endless and relentless. I wish this mod was better, but I got use to using the "trench warfare" and loving the era already, this is one of my favourite mods. I hope Relic and CA make a TW/Company of Heros mashup for an actual WW1 game. Also to continue the comment I've been leaving on every mod review video: - Broken Crescent for Medieval II - Republic of China 1924 for Medieval II - Genghis Khan/Mongol mod for Rome: Barbarian Invasion - Morning Sun (Total War Centre version) for Shogun II

Thanks a lot for the shout-out, I appreciate it. Agree 100% with you. It’s a real shame the mod turned out this way, but it makes sense. The best mods for Napoleon are the ones that expand on the foundations, like Napoleonic Total War 3 which makes the battles extremely realistic. Or Darthmod, which just improves the game all around.

@@keizoxd5623 Tbh, the map in Shogun 2 is limited, its just they added stuff in that is limited by the AI, ive played those bigger mods with Korea being "added" in, AI doesnt work well with stuff it was coded in. @darkfireslide

Using a 19th century framework for 20th century warfare doesn't help. It could totally be done. All you would have to do is make it so that it's possible to field many armies at once, make supplies matter more than money, have many settlements and different settlement types to reflect production woes of the time, and have it so people can build trenches--some of these features exist in Rome 1 and Medieval 2, actually (towns vs castles, building forts). Make entrenched armies nearly impossible to bypass. For the battles you'd need to widen the maps significantly and make the AI respond much faster than in most TW games. It's totally doable. Just probably not within Napoleon's framework. Nothing is possible within Empire/Napoleon's framework.
@Koelebig
@Koelebig 5 жыл бұрын
@@darkfireslide Well yeah, but with 20th century warfare you'd have to think in front lines. Imagine a game like Hearts of Iron 4 combined with Total War mechanics. Then imagine that you'd have to play (or auto-resolve) every battle. Then imagine how many battles you'd have to play. Then think how much fun it would actually be.

Also, this is the province map of Hearts of Iron 4: imgur.com/Wxq4KKP Please let me remind you that in HOI4 you move divisions and attack enemy armies from one province/region to the other (just like good old STW and MTW) and you'd have tons of battles going on. Like I said, it's doable, but would it be fun? And also, how many battles would you play? And: Wouldn't it become sort of a Hearts of Iron IV clone anyway?
@merlin4084

I think WW1 could be achieved in total war, but I think only in the Empire infrastructure. I am sure that if a custom map was made for that game you could create a garrisonable trench system, like you can with stone walls in Empire. However, a dedicated game would be better. And the campaign map doesn't need to change all that much. All CA needs to do is make a map if the Western Front with lots of smaller provinces with instead of cities is a series of bunker systems, which have a small garrison of their own so you don't have to recruit huge amounts of soldiers to garrison them yourself. So you could only have the funds to have 3 armies that move around in the "big pushes" but the AI could do the same somewhere else in the line and you have to defend that province/sector with whatever troops are garrisoned in that sector, which can be upgraded through upgrading the bunker complex in that sector. WW1 Total War is possible, it just needs the scale to be brought down from continent spanning to theatre focused. But that doesn't seem to be anything CA are capable of doing.

Look at the flag of the German Empire. I just HATE when people do that. What do I mean? That's a flag from the Empire, yes, but not the state flag. It's the service flag of the colonial ministry and foreign ministry. So many people see flags of the Empire and think "Oh, that's cool!" and that use that instead of the real one. It's just stupid. The biggest offender being the Iron Cross on the Black-White-Red backround, which was the naval jack of the Empire.

I played the mod as Germany on Normal (mostly cause ive found difficulty means the AI gets bonuses and i get debuffs, which is stupid). The gameplay is lots of fun once you get through the early game, its quite boring watching the ai throw armies at you, and yes, the Allied powers do have ALOT of money cheats, but i played and eventually won the campaign, the AI uses machine guns and bunkers ALOT later on. The game gets heated at points cause you have to maneuver around those machine guns and bunkers, and bunkers REQUIRE you to go into melee to beat. The mod does what it set out to do, recreate WW1 in Napoleon Total War, however, the game limits them from making a 1:1 representation.

Totally get what youre saying about the AI trying to fight a 19th century war. I played this mod a couple of years ago and it struck me as really powerful how broken the combat was; just carnage and panic everywhere. It really brought home that in WW1 we learned that the sheer destructive capability of the industrial revolution meant that the rules of war just don't work any more
@winters1942
@winters1942 5 жыл бұрын
The reason for the trenches in WW1 are a combination of machine gun, artillery and barbed wire. Barbed wire slowed down troops that where crossing and the machine gun just mowed people down. Artillery left the ground in such a way that it was also very hard for troops to cross in any kind of formation.

Would you ever consider playing the Sigh of Empire mod for Medieval II? The name sounds weird, but it's a mod based on the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom rebellion in the Qing Empire. The way to model trench warfare is to have half stacks continuously from Switzerland to the North Sea. Napoleon to WW1 represents a dramatic increase in troop numbers. WW1 battles would be emergent behavior in this mod if every side could recruit 10x more troops. Also, infantry in the mod doesn't shoot nearly as far as they should have historically. Infantry could kill at least out to 300 yards, and could engage light field artillery.

In regards to your comments about the Napoleon AI not knowing what century they are in, I find that's an issue in vanilla as well. I've lost count of how many times the AI mills around in front of my line, not shooting and then charging in, or forgoing shooting entirely and charging my line. I really do not believe CA programmed the AI to prioritise shooting over charging because in most battles in vanilla the AI just charges into close combat. Recently I have found a mod that seriously makes the AI in both Empire and Napoleon a lot smarter for line battles, and a little smarter in the Campaign map. It's called the Bran MacBorn AI improvements mod and this mixed with Darthmod for Empire Total War (the modder made his mod compatible with it and comes in a good number of flavours too, with a fix for the Ottoman and protectorate bugs) makes the campaign so much harder. For example, in the Empire campaign, battles where I would have gained heroic victories against armies of 3000 men while losing only 400 of my own soldiers out of 2000 men, now I am struggling to keep 2/3 of my army alive. Custom battles are also a lot harder, but it's not as bad as Campaign battles as you can pick and choose what units you want to bring on both sides. I would recommend you give this combination of mods a go and see what you think. I find it has breathed new life into Empire for me.

Interestingly, Frances first offensive (in Elsaß I think) was pretty much a bunch of brightly dressed soldiers walking into German machine guns and the Germans doing what probably any sane soldier would do in that situation --- mow them down. Also, are those rifles firing at the rate of MGs?
@kill4monney213
@kill4monney213 5 жыл бұрын
Once you unlock machineguns and bunkers you're pretty much already won the campaign imo. You can just march single stack "armies" of mg bunkers into the enemies and they will lose thousands. Even they do eventually figure out to charge the bunkers, the game makes them 1 time use anyways, there is pretty much never any real loss if you do this strat.

10:00 yea that's a pretty fair assessment, the modders did an amazing job but there's only so much you can do with the AI, my mid games just dissolved into me getting the artillery with the longest range and like with all gunpowder era total wars if you outrange the AI they will just start walking towards you, then I just sit back and wait with my rifles and MGs

Can you do a review of the Rome Total War Enhanced Plus Mod for the next Mod Review? Even if you do not do a review of it I recommend it as something to try in your free time. I have been a die hard fan since 2005 and Rome Total War is my favorite of all the Total War titles. For me this mod has introduced a number of new and fresh things while maintaining my love for the vanilla experience. I see it as a bit of a middle ground between EB and vanilla. I love your content and it is great having a channel to come to that has so much love and dedication to my favorite game series. Keep up the great work!

Unfortunately it seems like TW isn’t really the best foundation for WWI battle gameplay. That really screams for a Company of Heroes or Men of War type system IMO. The modders May have put in effort for this mod but I’m afraid it was always going to be troublesome because TW wasn’t ever intended to handle more than about Napoleonic warfare. At most, 1860s-1870s perhaps.

If only it has FOTS features such as naval bombardment and railway, it could've been a mod for FOTS though. FOTS remains the most modern Total War game to date; even though, I would like to see more industrial or modern game eventually. Thumbs up!

I enjoyed this mod a lot but honestly, it doesn't feel like WWI, in the early stages of the campaign is like the franco-prussian war with the armies trying to fight like it was the Napoleonic era, later in the game it feels more like the Soviet civil war with massive armies, bunkers and better artillery

A big issue of the mod is how one can simply win by deploying ordinary infantry in one corner of the map and putting them in skirmish formation. Set the game to fast forward, make yourself a coffee and by the time you're back the battle is won.

It's a shame the Napoleon engine didn't include other continents like Empire did. It was called a "world war" for a reason....the US, Australia, Canada participated in that war...

Machine Guns in this game a BROKEN. Seriously they can cut down an entire battalion like cheese. And your artillery can’t harm them because of the bunkers which are somehow made of Vibranium.

I am fairly certain the men are turning because they are targeting a fleeing/moving unit and are shifting so their front is facing the enemy. Putting htem on Guard Mode hypotehtically should solve that issue but I haven't play NTW but maybe 4 hours so I am not sure if it behaves like E, S2, M2, and R1 do.
