Classic Mini Restoration
Im Tom
And Here you will be able to follow my classic mini restoration from start to finish! It is an Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc registered in 1986. I bought the car with 2 months MOT and it was running although the slave cylinder had gone. My plans for the car are to restore it to my standards just like my Orange one if not even better... if thats possible. More videos on the way of the classic mini so be sure to subscribe and keep up to date.

Another top upload Tom. Make sure that when the carb jet is lowered (choke / throttle opened)that it doesnt foul the bulkhead when engine is rocked backwards. Cheers Guy

Total car reviews! need your help if you know Ive got my mini clubman running after severn years it seems to run ok but when you rev it, it seems to make a backfire up through the carb. Could it be timing or something else i just cant seem to find the answer on the internet. Plus it runs very rich almost like the choke is on when it isnt

Another brilliant Video Tom. That intake manifold is slightly longer than the standard stock one and moves everything slightly to the bulkhead. I have the same problem, but with everything fastened down tight it shouldn’t be an issue. There’s also a bracket that helps hold the tie bar in place your missing, it would be better to have it, I’ll send you a picture in messenger. Well done on getting into MiniWorld, yep a front page spread when it’s finished. And that Mini of Alex’s ..... I 💖 it ... 👍😄😜

Gavin, thankyou! and I have but recently I experience some bad ones.. I.E asking for advice about wiring then them turning on me slating my day job haha! but as always I take it on the chin and crack on haha!

That is a bit wrong mate. If you watch Bill Sollis dvd on building a 1380, he is always checking the Haynes manual. He also says he took advice on spec ( me thinks it was Swift Tune ) 100bhp/100 ibs . He is a champion Mini racer, and has build one or five A Series race engines, so you ask advice is a top idea. You have a Top Build there.

You forgot the engine bracket. That bolts to the steady bar. Nice to see it coming along 👍

Another great video tom, as someone else said you need the extra bracket on the engine steady, also there should be an earth strap on the engine steady as well, the carb needs an abutment plate fitted between the carb and manifold which supports the throttle and choke cables, keep the videos coming 👍

There should be a bracket that bolts to the outside of the engine steady and to the block and the engine earth strap also bolts to where the steady mounts. Other than that, excellent video as always!

However long it takes, every videos worth waiting for my dude! Alex's mini though, stunning! (as well as yours of course!) Knowing my luck you've probs ordered an air filter but hey! You'll want a 1.5" air filter as you've got a HS4 carb. I recommend a k&n air filter as they sound ace and are better on performance. All the best Tom!

Also Tom thanks for the mini of the week Anyways I have a massive problem with it ahah logbook issues Anyways the log book said it was a jetblaclk and the number plate on the logbook and on the car are slightly different ahhah I got in contact with the dvla and got a new logbook sorted out for my car now so i can definitely confirm it's a 1989 mini thirty haha my mistake but I will get some updates in the verry near future of my mini named foo 😂👍

Great vid. Make sure you put some heat protection on that rear fuel line to the carb. Amazon is your friend and cheap as chips heat line shield.

I noticed that when you put the carb on you missed a head shield plate.... haha not too expensive but they're great for directing the mani heat away from the carb. You can use manifold studs , the ones that screw into the cylinder head !

your fuel pipe should come out the pump in rubber then to a steel pipe on the bulk head then to a rubber pipe to the carb due to the heat off the exhaust. you have a bracket missing on the engine on the steady bar

Hei Tom! Do you have an engine breather connected to a hose and going into the car? On the radiator side?

not at the moment mate, i was going to ask where that goes haha!

That's an engine breather, from that only comes hot oil vapors. That is to connect to the heater inside the car right? That should be connected with the refrigerant circuit, you should have a connection on the hose that connects the water pump with the radiator.

Hi Tom great video as always. I think you’ve forgot to fit the engine steady support bracket, www.minispares.com/catalogues/classic/Classic~Mechanical~Parts~Manual/Engine/Engine~Mountings.aspx?2~12~119 Part number 23. This supports the larger bolt (part 20) that you’ve fitted and without it, the bolt will shear/ or come loose. Keep up the great work pal 👍
