I picked up a $600 1971 Mini in NZ from a helicopter mechanic coming back from Antarctica. I was just coming out of the South Pole. My girlfriend and I drove that Mini all over the South Island of New Zealand and to Auckland. Great memories of a stellar car. The girl friend is now my bride of 22 years ;)

Clever tip Jonny. When a battery is completely dead. Take the terminals off and connect to jump pack and it'll start. If the dead battery is still connected it'll just sapp the charge out of the jump pack

Absolutely beautiful Minis. I started out with classics after passing my test and sadly they rotted away. I currently have a 20 year old R52 Cooper convertible and a 2023 F56 Cooper SE (electric). I love Minis so much, I even named my second daughter, Mini.

Ive owned 23 proper Mini's, All in various stages of rusting out. I learnt everything i needed to know welding and mechanical wise, Replaced or patched just about every panel, Made my own steel flip front on hydraulics with new panels, Fitted a Metro turbo engine (on drum brakes!!!), deseamed three Minis and one Clubby and my favourite colour was the Vermillion Orange with a white roof.

clean up all neutral connections, battery to body and chassis to starter or run a jump lead from neutral to starter casing, not only do they fur up on the battery, but the body also, builds up fuzz.. awesome find, can't beat a classic mini, some of my best driving was done in a mini.. and so simple, didn't need the garage and to re- mortgage the house to service them.. a true people car..

As an owner of a ‘91 Cooper, just gotta say SPi Mini Coopers didn’t come around until ‘92. ‘91’s were still carbs. Margaret seems so similar to me. Still have my ‘91 and had an ‘05. Got myself a flip front kit, never installed it though. The BMW lasted 3 years mechanically. The Rover’s still going strong.

7:20 In the early 2000's Alex Moulton, the engineer behind the suspension of a number of BL cars from the first Mini to the MGF, banned BMW Minis from his estate in Bradford on Avon. They had to be parked outside The Hall grounds! He really despised them.

I use a small plastic seringe ( no needle) with fresh petrol into the plug hole 3-5ml per cylinder It wets the rings, helps the suck stroke… Rocking it in 4th gear gives you more power torque against the stuck engine than 1st…. I winched a stuck engine in 4th with oil I each cylinder… it dragged the wheel then turned the engine

Can’t beat an original mini. I have my first ever Clubman saloon in the parents garage. Not moved since 1995. Sadly the old man sold the MG Metro engine that was supposed to go into it. It will live again one day. Ideally with a full custom multipoint cage and a mode engine conversion with custom subframes and wishbones front and rear. I really need to get up there and start scanning it so I can design all of the stuff for whenever it is I’m able to find somewhere to restore it.

I used to produce co-polymer blow moulded fuel tanks for the 'new' mini back in 2000-2003 and we literally couldn't make enough ! We ran Sunday-friday 24hour (3x8 hour shifts/day) plus overtime on Saturday (3 shifts) and Sunday (1 shift). So I'd say that this car was phenomenally successful !

Beautiful little original mini. I had 3 original minis. A yellow 1275, a green 1000 and a white mini van 1000. When the BMW mini was released I thought it was too big and unattractive. I've changed my mind now- it's a nice design.

Hey Jon the early minis were called ‘one’ in trim level :) then cooper then the cooper s . Few differing option packs on each trim . The ONE was the non cooper variant As a classic mini person I vowed never to have an early r50 😂 now I have a 2001 cooper chilli pack and I love it ! They’re great . I parked my 1974 Land Rover Series 3 beside a 'new type' mini, and it was longer and wider than a Land Rover. Not much Mini about it ! But I did have a mini 1000 called Bubby, and she was a great wee car, full of lovable character and charm. The originals are very small outside, but surprisingly spacious inside, and have such a lovely face IMHO.

That airbox with the mini logo engine cover is really cool. Quite funny how they made tiny changes like that to "modernise" the car. They are perfect cars apart from safety. The Coopers were the first of the Mini line to have fuel injection, first introduced in 1991. This makes this particular one quite rare, with only 19,000 non injected Coopers made during 90 and 91. The last Minis received injection in August of 1994.

Great find! Worth all the hard work to get the garage doors open. The Classic Mini is a 1991 Mainstream Carb Cooper. It was the model between the 1990 RSP and the 1992 Single Point Injection. The seats are ‘Racing Crayons’ fabric. Although not as popular as the earlier and later models. They are getting quite rare. I would say it’s done 29,000 miles, and was looked after. Would love to see a follow up video on both cars! 👍

Crikey! Jonny, you said you like doing barn finds authenitically - it makes your life harder. Chainsawing through dirt will make anybody's life harder! Saw will be blunt straightaway. Here's a tip - wash off all the dirt before you chainsaw the stump. Then you wont need the big handsaw. Probably not a tip you'll need often, but hey, happy to help. Love your Barnfinds!

I had a BRG S-reg (1978) Mini Cooper back in 93, loved that little car. Brought it as a non runner for £400 spent the whole summer stripping down and rebuilding her. Then in October that year she was stolen and set on fire...Gutted. Really miss that car. Im 6ft 4 so I fitted ford sierra seat mounts so I could fit properly and built a special console for the extra dials i had fitted.

Interesting to compare the size and weight of the cars. From what I read (I stand to be corrected) the '91 model is circa 1,400 lbs. A current mini cooper is circa 2,800lbs. We're all being told that we should be more environmentally aware. Yet, it's pretty simple maths to work out which car requires more energy to provide inertia. Progress is a funny thing.

The same principles apply regarding mass. The greater the mass, the more protection is needed in the event of a crash. If all cars were smaller and lighter, the dynamics of safety apply. It's a chicken and egg thing.@@MrAdopado

If a super-light car could pass the tests we wouldn't have ended up with the current set of designs. Also, crash safety isn't the only reason for heavier cars. Many people choose a physically larger car for reasons of comfort. People also prefer quieter cars so they now have sound insulation and vibration resistant features which all add to the weight. Even wheels and tyres are large and heavy compared with 50 years ago ... so large that there isn't room to include a spare in many vehicles ... which is just as well because that would make the already increased weight even greater!

I love this channel.. BUT this episode in particular resonates…. I had a 1990 Mini Red Flame, 998, with a factory cooper kit (flowed head and exchaust, twin SU carbs, upgraded Cam, georgious steering wheel - small alu spoked with a fat leather wrapped wheel).. It has the same plastic guard for the electrics that was useless - used a marigold (washing up glove)to seal the distributor which fettled the misfire in the extrream wet of Scotland! Miss that car! This is a beauty!

That’s perfect, Johnny! You showed one of the main reasons I prefer older cars. Regarding the 2002 car - “the battery’s flat so the boot doesn’t open” - say no more. And I will never mock you for owning/using manual, analog tools and cars - Luddites unite!! Pay no mind that I’m using a computer to write this…..

lIVING THE DREAM - in the Pacific Northwest in the colonies I know these barn finds exist because of the number of old cars found and restored in the area , I have no idea how to go about finding them. Going way back in time I was stationed in England 1967 and picked up an Air Force staff car. We got on the M1 and I asked the driver aren't we going a little fast? He said there was no speed limit. About that time I heard a bit of a high whining sound looked over and we were being passed by a Mini Cooper by at least 20 mph faster. What and amazing sweet machine.

I literally gasped when the classic Mini was revealed. Such a lovely car.
