Louie Simmons who is probably the among the top 2 power lifting coaches in the world advocates this device as supplementary for the normal squat. It has it's uses such as forcing the body to stay more upright when doing squat.

Ive been using the Manta Ray for 6 months now, I don't feel the bar digging into my traps, I went from using 200 lbs in the squat to using 320 lbs for 5 sets of 8 reps, I have tried other rep schemes in which you do a few warm up sets then dive into the heaviest weight you can handle on the squat, ya don't have to use a shizz load of weight to develop your legs so I use the set scheme 5 sets of 8 reps on each and every set with a minute and a half of rest period, the thing is the shorter the rest your gonna use less weight but your gonna get good leg development and in time use heavier weight, I increase the weight each week by a little bit of weight .The Manta Ray it is a top squat as the Dave Draper top squat bar is, I tried the Dave Draper top squat bar I like the Manta Ray better. I don't grab the bar behind me I placed two metal chains onto the bar which I hold in front of me I am in a squat rack, I then come down as though as I am going to seat in a chair,I see that my leg development has progressed alot. After squats I do 3 sets of leg curls and 3 sets of leg extensions. I'm very impressed with the Manta Ray.

Thanks Barry. A decent review from someone who's got experience with the Manta Ray. I'm just getting back into barbell back squats, due to front squatting mostly for last couple of years. I'm trying to iron out some wrinkles and I'd been looking at both the Top Squat and Manta Ray. I'm going to purchase a Manta Ray now after reading your post.

i like it, im not going for super heavy just my own weight {200} on the bar this works for me im used to the bar but this is more comfortable

Glad I found your vids... I'm using a 3 day split right now. ..I think I'm going to give your a try. Currently in using "huge in a hurry" is a book. .

You can account for the bar placement by sliding it down an inch or 2

Good explanation Lee on the Manta Ray. At first it looks like a great tool but not using a pad or manta ray is the best way to go

I just squat with a hooded sweater on, adds more grip for bar and hood keeps good amount of pressure off my neck…

I Gave Up The Belt & Gloves Many Years. Only Utilize Chalk During Deadlifts, And I Am Seriously Considering Doing Away With A Pad, During My Squats. With That Said, I Have A Quick Question: Does Front Squats Engage Your Glutes/Hamstrings, As Well As The Back Squats?

Manta ray is purely for olympic high bar squats to keep you upright, not for comfort

Thanks for the review! I JUST discovered this piece on bb.com Am curious to give it a go, but the cons of having the bar a few inches above traps may take some serious getting used to as you mentioned.

I bought it and don't recommend it and actually gave me injuries squatting cracking my back. it completely changes the movement

Can the Manta Ray be used with no hands on the bar for lunges per se? Similiar to a safety squat bar. Cheers.

I wouldn't use buy such a thing but it could be a good tool for those who suffer from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome since it looks like it helps pushing your chest up.

Whenever somebody doesn't like something it's always the same comment - it's no good for serious lifters. By what a serious lifter is judged, by if he uses a Mantaray?? wtf

..I am 13 and in the 6th grade, I have been bodybuilding for a year and can out lift most of the highschool in my town... But I can not find good cardio to help me loose that stubborn fat I still have on my upper body

First off stay away from bread and anything with sugar, then go on the Intermittent diet of which you only eat dinner, you will lose alot of body fat, for breakfast and lunch consume bone broth to keep hunger at bay plus your getting vitamins and minerals

I love your vids Lee, and have a lot of respect for what you are doing and have done, however I find that going so high bar opens you too more risk to your neck, elbows, wrists and lower back when sqauting. Well, just in my experience. Resting them mid trap level I find most comfortable. May also be because I am a 6'4 ectomorph. I've found higher the bar means more tendency for forward tilt and therefore stress on lower back. Peace.

If you want bigger arms, work out your entire body. When you are working out your entire body, you are producing more testosterone. That and a diet with all your macros and micros (equally important, imo). As for bicep isolation, anything that stimulates the biceps, really. Bar curls have always worked well, but so can other unorthodox exercises.

If you have a problem with the bar against your neck as he stats then you're doing it wrong to begin with. So if this is you and you understand that the con of the manta ray is that it makes it sit to high then why is it a con to you? Learn proper bar placement and you won't need this.

Anything that takes me further away from the weight, I avoid. One, due to lack of complete control, and two, due to lack of real life application. However, I suppose people who are strictly bodybuilding for aesthetics would benefit if they had an issue with bar placement or pain or something... but in that case, might as well skip squats altogether and use a machine.

This equipment will sit pretty well with crossfitters, noobs and those who are "inspired" to get into shape only at the beginning of the new year. But i don't think you should even consider using it, if you are a serious lifter. This kind of thing makes your body lazy, because it doesn't allow your body to automatically adjust the weight on your shoulders. I'd use the money for this to get myself a good squat belt.

To the Paradise City on a NightTrain! How does it make the body ‘lazy’ when it actually makes squatting HARDER?! As someone above said the strongest powerlifting gym in the world Westside Barbell use it as a squat variation to build their regular low bar back squats!!!
