Tom, I have a Master of Science degree in clinical mental health, and the operant conditioning you do is textbook. So nice to see this. Sometime makes me want to switch from working with people to working with dogs...lol. Keep up the good work!

Where in your clinical mental health textbooks do they recommend treating nervousness with physical punishment out of curiosity? Being able to correctly label operant conditions doesn’t mean you know when to use them.
@elizak1007
@elizak1007 3 жыл бұрын
@RR I am fully aware of the definitions of each operant condition. You are using a tool to discourage a behavior through pain it doesn’t really matter which one. Yes it works. But, the overwhelming consensus of academic literature shows it to be less effective than only rewards, links punishment to increased cortisol, stress, etc and these types of tools have been shown to be correlated with higher rates of anxiety and agression in dogs trained with them. So why use it?
@elizak1007
@elizak1007 3 жыл бұрын
@RR I am pretty sure slip leads especially corrections are often labeled as positive punishment as you are adding something (tightening of slip lead/ correction) to decrease behavior (reactivity/pulling ). So I’m fairly confident it is an appropriate word for slip lead in this case. Are you not giving corrections? It sounded like you weren’t against them. If you don’t that’s great. I still think though the slip lead is painful. I haven’t read much proving the efficacy of negative reenforcement being added to positive renforcement. Feel free to link me too them. Painful experiences in general increase cortisol which seems harmful in a scared dog.

@@elizak1007 dogs in the wild will bite/nip each other to correct one another. I don’t know how a quick pop on the leash would be considered “painful”. Every dog and situation is different as well. I assume you’re against a prong collar or electric collar as well, but have you ever had an aggressive (not fearful) loaded gun on the end of your leash that would rip your someone’s face off and reacts to anything and everything and could be a potential liability? I have, and a harness and a “leave it” will do nothing in that escalated state, so I feel that a quick pop on the leash as a correction is perfectly fine for a fearful dog, and if it’s not then you would try a different approach. I’m not a trainer, but I worked at a kennel for a year or so with a trainer/behaviouralist so I’ve seen a lot of different situations and tools used for different things. It’s very situational, but of course you’re entitled to your opinion. I think @RR makes a great point and explained it perfectly.

@@tatjiannasavoie9725 Yes, I have a reactive dog that is pretty much fine now with consistent counter conditioning and a harness and I specialize in taking on reactive fosters of which I have had multiple of multiple breeds. I’m 100lbs and never had a dog I couldn’t handle it’s all about knowing their threshold. Dogs and humans do lots of things in the wild that are suboptimal. That doesn’t mean they should be used. This is an appeal to nature fallacy and dogs have been domesticated to live with humans for a very long time. More over you are not a dog, your dog does not see you as one, and acting like one is illogical.

This was beautiful! Tom you have helped SO MUCH in learning how to have a better relationship with our dog. It is so crazy to see how many trainers say "Carry hot dogs, turn around if you see another dog, go for walks at 4am to avoid any triggers" and are so agains any corrections. When you say "A dog needs to know that what they're doing is wrong," it's such a true statement people are so scared to discipline their dogs. If you wouldn't let you 5 year old run wild with no limits or rules, why would you let your dog do it?

One of the best Border Collies I ever had was 'impossible' to have around any other dogs, children chased after anything moving. She was 2 years when I took her on. They are very intelligent and need a job. After a week of basic training I introduced her to sheep. Her out run was natural, she went wide to get behind the sheep (only 5 of them) her pick up and drive back was done at the speed of light, totally ignoring the lie down command! I worked her with sheep twice a day and she was so fast to learn. I took her everywhere, in town, to a busy railway station with loads of people. Her nervous aggression was gone. However she was unsure of my sister's children, all quite young at the time, she never snapped at them but would go out of her way to avoid them - that was until my youngest niece, toddled across the room. She had a cookie in her hand and quick as a flash that dog streaked in, took the cookie and disappeared under the table. When my niece got to me she went to take a bite of the cookie and it wasn’t there! After that incident she was fine with the kids. She just needed a job to do.

My sister in law has 2 border collies-- littermates...not the best situation. She has zero time for them. They are crated all day...and have no place to run or any job to do. It's horrible. I took my GSD to meet them the other day, because the collies are fear aggressive. My GSD was like what the actual heck, lol. They never take the collies anywhere. Trainers have told them to get rid of one of the collies. I'm so glad you have given your border collie a job! Makes me happy!!

I want to thank you for what you do! I was on another YT channel listening to them bash prong/e-collars and saying it's science. I shared my own story of my ridgeback, who at the point of reacting badly to my grandson, I needed to be the "parent" not the friend. I had been watching your videos and knew the tools. I bought them, found a trainer to teach me how to use them properly and now I have a dog that not only loves me but RESPECTS me. He alerts me to "dangers" (as he sees them) but now when I tell him "stop" he's done. The positive re-enforcement only took us so far. I thank God for you everytime I see one of these videos, when you save another dog's life!!

Sad that they malign science too. It incorporates experimenting, watching, note positive/negative outcomes, determine what works and what does not, then draw a conclusion. There may be different outcomes using the same tools but different trainers. So to compare a true apples to apples would take a lot of investigating - dog n issue, human n communication with dog, and tools used: what works, what does not, and why. If making a statement without real data, then they are misrepresenting a lot. Tom seems to only need to correct at beginning - to get dog/human connection. Once established, rarely needs to correct it seems. Look how well they did at end - no leash! I wonder how they explain this outcome? Peace🌠🌄

I think people who are really into certain breeds can sometimes end up making excuses for undesirable behaviour by labelling it as a quirk of the breed, or whatever. All I know is that I’ve yet to see a dog of any breed where Tom’s magic and the No Bad Dogs approach hasn’t made a difference ☺️

My sister in law needs to watch this video. She has two female border collies, littermates. They have zero training. Cannot be in the same room, they FIGHT. It's horrible. They are crated all hours of the day/night. No running nothing...no jobs. Makes me so sad. I've tried to help, but can only do so much.

That’s cruel these dogs need a lot of stimulation they are basically going mental please try to get her to re home them or phone a dog charity to rescue them

@@TASIAawful1 I 100% agree! I told her to reach out to farmers in the area. They seem blind to the fact that the collies are going insane. She should have never got those collies. She has 2 toddlers and a brand new baby now too. So zero time for the collies. She says that they will have a fence up soon, so the collies can run. I told her that they need way more than just that.

Woah that sounds like you should call animal control, sounds like she shouldn't have those animals.
@gundog4273
@gundog4273 3 жыл бұрын
@@radiationshepherd animal control doesn't take animals just for being crated all day. If they have food and water, don't look underweight, aren't in unsanitary conditions, and are overall healthy they won't be taken. We happened to catch our neighbors dog the day his water was frozen and were able to get the animal removed. He just sat on a lead outside all day and barked, and barked, and barked, and barked some more. They haven't got another dog since (:

i love this ladies enthusiasm when she takes over! i thought it was interesting how you said she wants to trust new people so she goes up to them then reacts. my border collie does the same thing sometimes he is fine with people sometimes he isn’t but he always approaches them first.

Great video Tom, l nearly cried watching it. We had a similar problem with our Doberman and after watching your videos l worked out l was the problem. I was so stressed when he would start barking and lunging at other people and dogs that l would pull on the lead and freak out, l didn't think about it transfering down the lead. I have since spent countless hours, days and months undoing all the bad l created. I now have a more relaxed and happy dog and l am no longer stressed. Thankyou for all the time you put into your video, l have learnt so much and greatly appreciate it.
