One of my favorite things about the early series is how Arakawa refuses to let the audience become too comfortable with their opinion on Roy. He's clearly someone the Elrics trust (to an extent), so we're inclined to trust him too, but he's also part of the military, which we learn very quickly is VERY shady if you didn't already have suspicions about them going into it. His friendship with Hughes is clearly genuine and we see that he's just as suspicious of the military and we're wholeheartedly on his side, and then the incident with Maria Ross makes us second guess ourselves again. It's such a fantastic way to handle the secondary protagonist (if you count both Elric brothers as the main protagonists)

The boys are great, but Roy honestly has one of the best character arcs in the entire series. We see how the war both broke and shaped him, how he formed his convictions and where his ambitions come from. We even see those feelings which have been building up over the course of the entire series spiral out of control when he finally confronts Hughes' killer, and how he is barely able to make it through that. Easily some of the best character progression.

Also, let us not forget that Roy was complicit in the genocide of Ishtvall. His hands are *BEYOND* bloody. Which is why his drive to change Amestris is so compelling. He's seen and executed upon the absolute worst impulses of the country and knows firsthand how evil it is.

To kinda explain Mustang's abilities & that fight scene, the way his Alchemy works is that on his gloves is a transmutation circle for changing the density & arrangement of air. His gloves themselves are made of a material called ignition cloth which when enough friction is applied to it, creates a spark. So essentially what he does is use his alchemy to create a trail of combustible gas leading to a target that is surrounded by newly arranged oxygen & hydrogen pulled from the air to create a violent reaction when he creates a spark to ignite the air he's arranged. The reason why water disables him is that if his gloves get wet, they can't produce a spark and he can no longer ignite the air he arranges. Conversely, in the fight against Lust where the room is flooded with water, Mustang takes out a different glove with a different transmutation circle on it to transmute H2O-> H2 & O, or water to Hydrogen and Oxygen, the exact thing that he uses to make explosions in the first place. It's also why Havoc had to throw his lighter, the gloves couldn't make a spark to ignite the gas, but the flame of a lighter sure can. For their final fight, he's using the lighter to create a spark from the friction on the flint in place of his gloves.
@EskChan19
@EskChan19 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's also why being able to transmute without a circle like the Elrics is such a big thing. It's not just because you don't have to wear a glove or something but because you don't need specialized circles for specialized tasks, you can make them up on the fly. In a world where everyone is a one-trick-pony, being the jack of all trades is something quite amazing.

@@fallenleaf3461 The thing is, one might think that using magic to make free oxygen atoms struggling to bind with _something_ (which releases energy) would make ignition a non-issue. Then again, Mustang's mentor was specifically trying to make fire, IIRC, not burn the world with free atomic oxygen.

Roy is easily one of the coolest, most competent characters in not only anime/manga but fiction in general. He is so well devloped. Everything from the casual mention of how his lips get stocky with fat which references his past as a human weapon to LITERALLY CARVING A TRANSMUTATION CIRCLE INTO HIS HAND AND SEARING HIS WOUND CLOSED never feels out of left field for his character. He seems like the kind of guy who would do that to protect hia loved ones.

Last time I watched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, I watched it with friends who had never seen it before and basically only knew the basics. Everyone got pretty attached to Mustang making the whole arc with Maria Ross and the events with Lust SO much fun. Needless to say, people were happy it turned out he was innocent. Hohenheim has also got some of my favorite stories within this series and it's always fun for me to see how people react to that! I won't say anything else on that but you're the first person I've seen that didn't immediately demonize him out the gate. BS all the way. That anime sucked so hard I almost skipped over the manga. All the homunculus are a series of coincidences of a "forbidden technique" done 7, no 6, no 5, no 6 times. Over a period of 400 years. And they work for Dante because they read the original manga... I guess. And the reason for everything? Body swapping... which meant Honenheim was NOT Al and Ed's biological father... A PLOTPOINT WHICH YOU CAN"T GET MORE UTTERLY WRONG. Spoiler for s spoiled story. I was just thinking I was glad we were finally leaving this crap back in the past, just to get this.
