I'm a white guy whom has been to Africa and plans to return. The opening comment about "white people singing about Africa" is odd to me. Just so you guys know, there are plenty of white people who are born and raised in Africa, their families having been there for generations (Chinese and Indians, too). They are Africans, too. Quite a few speak local languages. I think sometimes a lot of people don't realize this. I was just jarred by the comment.

Not all lyrics are cut and dry like a children's book. A lot of songs are metaphorical, inspired from true or imagined events by the author. Sometimes that's the beauty... trying to decipher meaning out of the 'not-so-obvious'.

He didn't have a chance of liking it when he starts the reaction by saying something inane like, "A bunch of white dudes singing about Africa." If he didn't even like Rosanna, their first Toto reaction, then he must just not like listening to actual musicians playing their own instruments. That's what happens when you grow up listening to nothing but "songs" that have had the music "sampled".

The songwriter keyboardist David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. When drummer Jeff Porcaro heard the original demo for the song being played by Paich, he got inspired to do the drum groove reminiscent of rhythmic African percussion. Something that he and percussionist Lenny Castro laid down on the track. The songs almost never made it onto the album, as it was recorded late in their session for Toto IV.

Hey guys, Much love to you 3, Great channel. This is where it's at. I remember when this song 1st came out. I was already listening to TOTO, so I loved it right away. I've never been to Africa either, I'm also a white male living in the US, so like the writer, I had only seen African safari movies etc. From what I'd seen about Africa, I knew it was a very beautiful Contenant, but also "very dry" until the rainy season where everything came back to life again. So back then, with no video, only hearing the song with that Infectious Groove between drummer Jeff Porcaro and Lenny White on Congas along with the message in the lyrics - to me it spoke of something very positive even prayerful like a blessing for rain in a thirsty land. I was always glad to hear this song. I'm still glad but ... Now watching the video, seeing this guy respectfully researching a special book on Africa while the band is set up on a giant book of Africa, then seeing the burning of the pages of the smaller important book that he found ... all the while hearing in the chorus "Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you". IMO, the video visually speaks of an urgency to visit the Contenant of Africa with all of its rich beauty and natural history, preserve it, and appreciate it before it's too late. Again, Much love

Engineer Al Schmitt stated that "Africa" was the second song written for Toto IV and had been worked on extensively in the studio being almost dropped. As eventually, the band grew tired of the song and considered cutting it from the album entirely. Paich refined the lyrics for six months before showing the song to the rest of the band and he also considered saving "Africa" for a solo record but decided against it. The band did not expect "Africa" to be a hit, after the intended success of lead single "Rosanna" (which had peaked at number 2). After Sony found out that the song was gaining traction in New York dance clubs, they decided to release it as another single and a hit was born.... "Africa" saw a resurgence in popularity on social media during the mid- to late 2010s, inspiring numerous Internet memes as well as a fan-requested cover by American rock band Weezer which peaked at number 51. Critics praised its composition and gentle production; the song continues to receive critical acclaim, and has been noted as one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone. In 2012, "Africa" was listed by music magazine NME in 32nd place on its list of "50 Most Explosive Choruses." In January 2019, a sound installation was set up in an undisclosed location in the Namib Desert to play the song on a constant loop. The installation is powered by solar batteries, allowing the song to be played indefinitely. In 2021 the song reached 1 billion plays on the streaming site Spotify all long after the song came out.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, because everyone is different and likes are subjective...but for the life of me I cannot understand how anyone can dislike this song or music. Toto was comprised of a group of the best studio musicians in the country and we're in great demand for producing and writing and backing other artists. Africa has a melody that is beautiful and melodic and up to this day it is easily recognisable....the lyrics are pure poetry....a classic, but then again even Jesus had his naysayers, not so Ollie?

Thanks for the reaction. Toto’s guitarist,Steve Lukather, said the musicians first came up with the tune while just sitting around playing some riffs they came up with. After putting the instrumental part together they thought it was good enough to put on the album. Only then did they come up with lyrics for instrumental so they could complete the album.Steve and Jeff Porcaro (Toto’s drummer) played on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album. They are studio musicians .who Lukather has played with George Benson “Turn Your Love Around “(Grammy for songwriting) Aretha and many others. I’m just glad they put the title “Africa” on this great melody.

"White men singing about Africa without ever having lived there" is the whole point of the song, guys. The romanticized version of Africa that the narrator fell in love with no longer exists outside of old books and movies. By this time, all of it's rivers had been charted; it's far-flung tribes contacted; and it's great beasts hunted down. It's adventures were now over. The version that exists today is more troubling than ever before- a continent embroiled in civil wars, beset by famine (why he said he "blesses the rains down in Africa"), and victims of widespread corruption. That's what the narrator is coming to terms with. The Africa he's idealized can no longer be accessed, no matter how much he wishes otherwise. All he can do is delve into his old books and conjure up it's old memories.

This has to be the LEAST controversial song ever recorded. It's just a soft-pop song by some dorky melodic hippie types from the 80's. The idea that anyone should give AF about whether the guy had visited Africa before is absurd. Guess what, I've never been to m'fu Narnia before either but I can write a song about it. People have written poems, books and songs about their romantic concepts of Paris and Rome and Shanghai and Sao Paulo for ages. It's not a documentary about Africa it's a pop song perfectly adapted to elevator music and background ambience while grocery shopping. People all over the world including Africa have written about America complete with all their bullshit stereotypes and there is zero controversy related to that.

The song was in its prime when I was about 7 years old and I lived in a Native village in Alaska. During this time, I read encyclopedias about Africa just to know more. I was 7. Then during this time I met a white woman that said she was from Africa. I argued with her stating she couldn't be from Africa because she was white and talked like an Englishmen. I had no idea of the history of Africa or colonialism and the horrors that the continent was subjected to but I knew damn well this woman wasn't from Africa. I was wrong naturally. She was like 3rd generation South African. She tried to explain it to me but I wouldn't understand. I guess that is my memory of the song.

Toto has some serious bangers. “Hold the Line”, “I’ll Be Over You” and “Rosanna” are my favourites by them.

It’s a love song about a man’s love for a place. It doesn’t necessarily mean the person that wrote it actually been there. A lot of songs are originally written as poems and then they have music added. This is one of those songs that I think was written in that sense of a poem and they came up with the music after. A lot of poems don’t really make sense at times but they have a certain rhythm at times.

Yeah.. I basically thought, because all we ever saw about Africa growing up were images of starving kids in dry lands.. The singer wished it would rain in Africa. But also I never really tried to analyse it further because to me it's just a pretty nice sounding radio song that I would not play myself if I was to put on some music at home or something. And I didn't have to because a former neighbour was a huge Toto fan and everybody knew without him telling us :)

Hold The Line- Toto. Gents their best rock song hit in the late 70s. I agree that Africa was Meah.. at best when it came out. Easy sing along song and as a kid i was fine with that. Hold The Line is dynamic and awesome! Love to see you react to that one! Hold the Line is better than both Rosanna and Africa . Keep on with the honest and great reactions!

You guys need to get over yourselves, you don't need to have ever physically been somewhere to have an impression of it, just like you meet people from a place and you get a feeling for it, long before you ever go there/or not. Very few songs have lyrics that spell out meaning, sometimes artistic licence is all about, you finding your own meaning in the song. Africa went to number one because its a great song, and when I first heard it, it sounded like a personal homage to Africa to me, and I understood that because I have been to Africa, many times, and its one of the few places in the world where the vibrational frequency of the place connects with you, long before you talk to any of the different peoples who live there.

Next one: Hold the Line. (One of)the greatest things about Toto is that all of their songs are distinct from one another. Can’t say that about a lot of today’s artists.

When this song came out, I moved down to my Aunt Irene Westmorland home, down in Celina Tenn. The song was okay, but I was a fan of ZZ Top, southern rock, blues, early years of Rolling Stones. Big on the blues, not too many people care for the blues now, so sad .

I think a lot of music, particularly in the rock genre in that period, didn't care much about meaning or message. Typically, music was written first, and someone had to put lyrics to it. Lyrics/meaning is often an afterthought, and people who listen would know the lyrics but never think a second about what they mean. Lyrics were often chosen based on what the words sounded like to the ear.
