So, you’re a passenger seated at the window of a commercial aircraft and you’re about to land. You watch as the trees grow larger, cars become bigger, and roads grow wider. Your plane crosses over the airport perimeter fence, and the runway suddenly appears under your plane's wing. You grab your armrest in preparation for landing, but the touchdown is so smooth that it’s nearly imperceptible. The landing was perfect.
Behind the flight deck door, the flying pilot is silently (or overtly) pleased with their effort. So what might have contributed to making this landing so buttery smooth? Let’s explore all the factors in today’s video!

Speaking of Ryanair, a Boeing 737 800 landing at Kerry airport (KIR) isn't going to be the smoothest because of its 2,000m (6562ft) runway. But the roughest landing I ever had was in a turboprop at that airport. The conditions weren't bad at all apart from the fact that it was dark, so you'd expect the landing to be ok in a smaller aircraft. The initial hit woke me from a sleep and there were plenty of audible gasps and yelps from other passengers.

My Best landing was a Delta 767 coming into LA from Hawaii, My hardest landing was an American Airlines 737 into phoenix.

My best landing was just recently at RIX by HiFly A320. It was so smooth that I could not understand if we have touched the ground or not.

spirit airlines flight from oak to san had a clear air go around due to incorrect approach speeds. Within the plane as we got lower and closer the pilot would push and release the throttle giving a jolting experience. same occurred on second attempt landing with hard braking once landed

The best landings I’ve ever experienced was with any international flight on Philippine Airlines. Does not matter which plane they use. They may not be the best airline around but their pilots are exceptional at executing smooth landings. Most recent experience was into Melbourne from Manila on a 777-300ER (which was surprising because PAL uses these planes for flights to the US West Coast and also Vancouver in Canada. PAL usually operates the MNL-MEL-MNL route with the A330-300). The landing happened close to 6:30am AEST and it was so buttery smooth, a few of us passengers were clapping. The worst landing I’ve ever experienced is probably with AirAsia on one of their A320s. Forget when it happened. It was such a hard landing that I was exchanging looks with my brother, who was seated next to me, and there were whispers in the cabin about the hard landing giving everyone a jolt. Didn’t help that my brother and I were seated towards the back.

Like the french says : L'atterrisage c'est la science des ânes i.e. landing is science for donkeys. It means that passengers like to bla bla talk about how the landing was good or not, but pilots are just required to keep it within certain parameters, and these parameters certainly do not contain any requireemenst for a kiss landing.

The Airbus A330 and A340 are really the true butter machine of aviation as we know it. I do try to make some smooth landings and i do have some videos about me trying to land as smoothly as possible in a real mobile flight simulator and some of them are not smooth and also quite sucks but i upload some of those not good landing videos anyway. I am looking at you 👉Lion Air. I flown with Lion Air twice and at the time, the landing was not hard actually.

Can vouch with the A330… at least in part to Philippine Airlines. Whenever I go back and forth between Manila and Melbourne, the airline operates its A330-300s and never has there been a time where the landings were rough on a PAL A330. Can’t remember much on the A340 landings because the last time I flew on one, the experience wasn’t very good as the cabin was seriously outdated. However, I’ve also experienced hard landings on A330s as well. Cathay Pacific, believe it or not, did this. During a late night flight last July, on approach to MNL, from HKG, the A330 had a pretty rough landing and everyone felt a noticeable jolt. After that experience, I was pretty surprised that Cathay pilots do this. (Given that Cathay is supposed to be up there with the best, the pilots didn’t really reflect that standard with smooth landings)

Rarely got rough landings on the A330. The only time I could remember such was with Cathay Pacific last July from Hong Kong to Manila. (They normally use the A321neo for flights between Hong Kong and Manila but because of the high volume of passengers for the flight I took, they used one of their A330-300s) On approach to Manila, the landing was pretty rough and everyone in the cabin felt a hard jolt in their seats. T’was unpleasant and shocking (pun intended) considering that this was Cathay Pacific operating the flight.

Butter smooth landings - any Philippine Airlines plane landing at their home base MNL, any weather condition (talk about home court advantage). Worst, a Sri Lankan A321 landing in clear weather at Colombo CMB - I wouldn’t be surprised if it was logged in as a hard landing… t’was an awful and unsettling landing.

Actually… it’s not just any PAL flight returning home. I can vouch that PAL executes smooth landings at any airport they land in, both in the Philippines and abroad. Most recent experience I had with such was a flight from Manila to Melbourne on a 777-300ER (na-surprise ako na ginamit nila tutal yan yung gamit ng PAL for US West coast and Vancouver in Canada)… When the plane was approaching Melbourne Airport, sobrang swabe nung landing na may palakpakan pa nga eh at madaling araw pa ang dating. Kahit na bulok minsan ang PAL sa serbisyo nila, one thing they always get right are smooth landings. Trademark yan ng PAL.

I disagree that landing at higher airfields renders the control surfaces less effective, pilots use what is called IAS which essentially caters for the lesser density of air and in effect the aircraft is physically moving faster through air to compensated for the loss of density, in such a scenario the control effectiveness would be retained.
