After a two week bender, Tim Madden awakens one morning from his drunken state, only to discover everything in his life seems amiss. There’s a fresh tattoo on his arm, his car is covered in blood, his girlfriend is in bed with the town sheriff, but worst of all, there's a woman's severed head in his weed stash. Sensing a setup and in desperate need to clear his name, Tim begins an investigation, with the help of his dying father, that soon begins to expose an ever stranger web of corruption, greed, blackmail, and violence woven into every aspect of the small coastal community of Provincetown.
The last feature film directed by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Norman Mailer, TOUGH GUYS DON’T DANCE is a wild, labyrinthian, neo-noir black comedy starring Ryan O’Neal (Love Story) alongside acclaimed actors Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Wings Hauser (Vice Squad), Lawrence Tierney (Reservoir Dogs), and more. Equal parts brutally violent, suspenseful, and blisteringly funny, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present the long overdue Blu-ray debut of TOUGH GUYS DON’T DANCE, newly restored in 2K from its 35mm interpositive, and featuring revealing new interviews with its cast and crew.

midnight movie mailer - absolutely adore this lurid cult melodrama with a tightly-wound o'neal as the haunted soft-boiled ex-con patsy schmo, knee-deep within a messed-up totally-twisted nocturnal "imbroglio" whilst attempting to stay on the straight 'n narrow in a seemingly perfect picture-postcard coastal burg.- game and knowing performances right across the board, scenery-chewing histrionics that will leave you breathless; can't wait to see "vinegar syndrome's" eagerly-awaited presentation of this ultra-campy minor-masterpiece of seething neo-noir atmosphere...

I missed it on VHS. I have to admit, this looks like a work of art. Just an absolute unsung Masterpiece, ripe for restoration!

One of my all-time favorites. Yes, it has 'oh man oh god oh man' (not to mention an even funnier line "YOUR KNIFE IS IN MY DOG), but below those silly lines is a charming, surrealistic crime thriller with a thick atmosphere and some really impressive dialogue!

It's almost a Coen Bros film. They had to have seen it.

People will buy this based on the meme's notoriety, but there's so much more to enjoy, not least of all Frances Fisher's blood curdling laugh.

An actual good film with a fantastic script, but Mailer wasn't a director so some line deliveries are ham-handed... but the film is intended to feel disjointed and the characters strange, this isn't 'by accident' or because he was a bad writer - they are all following their own internal logic and none of their motives are spoonfed to the audience. This is a complex script that actors and other directors have said they've loved and tried to emulate, but because some millennials have seen "family guy" they think it's a so-bad-it's-good movie like 'the room'. So they never get this far with the script because they go into it looking for jokes that aren't there - then think they should laugh at anything that strikes them as strange, as if it's all on accident. It's a complex character driven plot with many moving parts. if you don't pay attention and think about it you will walk away just as these people have, confused and thinking the film doesn't work. There are some odd deliveries, yes, Mailer wasn't a director. Look past it and follow the plot. It's far more complex than many 'thrillers' that came out decades after. Frankly shocked that people today are so proud of what they don't get, then laugh instead of trying to understand the text. No wonder no one reads anymore, they don't get literature at all. Watch for yourself when you're in the mood to *think.

Mailer had done three artsy movies before this one as a director. This was the most mainstream he had done. Criterion Collection released the other three movies, one of them Maidstone is known for including a real fight between Rip Torn and Mailer.
