It's always been great to rescue animals of all kinds and most of us appreciate seeing others do the same. I enjoy rescuing 99% of all animals, but in my experience, there are always some of those smaller insects that we as humans detest, like mosquitos. So as just a fun question, where is the line between those we protect and those we destroy almost instinctively. Most of us would say all animals deserve to live their lives, until we think of those that either accidentally kill millions, those we think are invasive, such as ourselves who have killed millions on purpose, or the insects responsible for the damage in our gardens. It's a perplexing thought to say the least.

Good question. I guess the answer is self preservation. If a creature actively predates or intends to become a parasite to a human, it becomes an ‘enemy’ in the process. For example, Sarah isn’t keen on spiders, but here in Scotland, they’re harmless to humans. So when I find one in the house, I ‘re-home’ it to the garden. However, if I find a tick on Jack, I will usually kill it, as it was a parasite on him, plus they carry the threat of the serious disease - Lyme disease. So yeah… if they’re a threat, they become a different story I guess.

@@dirtysecretsofscotland It is one of those things that depend on the circumstances I think. One of my female friends also hates spiders, she has to have someone else deal with any she sees. We do have a couple dangerous ones, black widows and brown recluse are two of the more common dangerous spiders we have here in Oregon. I like spiders, it is their webs I don't like having on me, but the long legged ones I find in the house usually get flushed.

Your a good guy there Willie! Not many people in the world today that truly care about history or the future of our world. I’m blessed to have found your and Sarah’s channels. To go out and do such manuel labor with a high probability of it going to the museum, shows the soul and heart you have. Thank you! I enjoyed this weeks video particularly a little more for the extra dig clip showing the outcome of the mystery object. I was sure hoping it was the holy grail. You will surely find more history an keep filling the museum with awesome items.

Willie, we here in Georgia say "if you don't like the weather now, wait a few moments and it will change" . Since we are on a coastal plain, we get the afternoon sea breeze that blows off of the Atlantic towards us. There is a video of a woman who found a bumble bee with out wings. She kept it as a pet for 32 days. Feeding it flowers, sugar water and took it out to her garden every day. So cool. Check it out on KZbin.

I figured after watching Sara paddle to Inchcolm island, I would pop over and watch you dig a hole in the woods. Both wonderful videos with great music! I wonder how many bottles were made with such deep divots, punts, or kickups just to make it look like there was more in the bottle than it appeared, a practice not lost in todays market unfortunately. What was the evidence that led you to want to dig in the farmers field? It could have been anything so you had to dig it, maybe next time. Cheers!😊

So happy I found you, when I did my heritage DNA I found out that I am 46% Scottish. I don't know why my kinsman would move to Tennessee USA? However, I had a question while admiring the hard work you do to find lost treasure. The marble, why did they put a marble in there, to begin with, thanks for all your hard work. I'm heading over to Etsy and I'm going to buy that bottle if it is still there. I do plan to come to Scotland, next year maybe I'll find you in the woods. I'm too old to help you however it would be an amazing find for me. Cheers

Hey - welcome aboard. It could be that your family emigrated to America during the highland clearances, or during other hardships in Scottish history. As for the Codd - I think I already replied to another message, but that one is in my own collection at home. The reason for the marble was to create a seal. They also had a rubber washer in their neck, where the marble is located. They turned them upside down and the combination of the aerated water, the rubber ring and the marble created a seal when the bottle was then turned the right way up. I hope you do make it to Scotland. Such a lovely place! Willie 🙂

Loved the story of the Codd bottle, especially as last time the dredger was here in Anstruther I found two thick glass bottle bases at very low tide on the beach out by the harbour mouth. Redfearn Bros round the base and a great big W on each base. Now I know which firm they came from. I kept them , even though they’re just broken bases as I was sure they came from Codd bottles! Thanks Willie, really interesting info. PS Concrete dates to 6500 BC and was used in Syria and Jordan to create floors and underground cisterns. I looked it up when I wanted to date a little structure at the end of our local golf course and was flabbergasted. I thought it was a modern invention!

Yup - sounds like you’ve got a couple of Wilson Codd bases there! I also read a lot about Roman and ancient concrete, but this slab is clearly relatively new - I’m thinking 1960s. It’s just perfect lines super crisp edges. Everything about it yells modern. Shame I didn’t find that out on the first day..! Willie :)

Hi Alexandrea, yeah - it was disappointing! But the Codd is a belter. So nice - maybe my best Codd. Willie :)

Every time I see those kick-ups I believe the sellers were trying to cheat the buyers by misrepresenting how much wine was really in the bottle. The mystery bottle could be for capers or olives or pickled onions.
