When I was younger I thought that pretty much whole physics was made to suit experiment, but when I started learning quantum physics, theories actually started to precede practice. Almost whole quantum physics was "sculped bu pure intuitions", by analogy to classical physics and logical consequences after making some wild assumptions. So many effects, discovered on paper with no experimental confirmations found later to be true, quantum spin, gravity waves, "worlds born of wild imagination", which were found to really exist.

My lost kitten, are you far from home? (Might be referring to Chen or Rin wandering about) Have you reached the end of your line? (Schrödinger’s cat involves a cat being half-dead until you open the box, at which point you guarantee it’s alive or dead; this question points to the negative being the result once you open the box) My, perhaps it isn’t just a matter of distance; no, it’s a matter of time (might be referring to Going at Planck in an Instant (i dunno the true name). IMO, the title in and of itself is impossible since, to move from point A to point B, a finite amount of time has to be done be it miniscule or huge. Going at a Planck distance instantaneously thus is impossible.) So I saw a little cat on my way by the shrine gate; a lucky glimpse of black which I could not ignore. With a round face and bowtie and how many tails? Surely two, like the stories from bakeneko lore. (This is where I’m confused whether it’s Rin or Chen. See, afaik Chen didn’t have a bowtie, she had a diaper hat. (is it really called a diaper hat?) Rin was the one wearing bowties.) We are the observers now, but what would it take to switch our positons? (Referencing Seija? Knowing Dr.LFR has a DDC soundtrack, it couldn’t be farfetched.) Spirits may live, just as long as we observe. (THIS LINE. THIS LINE. Bravo, Lyrica. Bravo. I like this one. It references the Tinkerbell effect, wherein as long as there is something believing it exists, it will. Keeping on observing spirits might actually make spirits exist!) Our world would choose yet to seal them away (The skeptic world of today doesn’t observe for spirits believing such things are preposterous. Might also reference Secret Sealing Club.) Ignorance killed them, betrayed their instinct; it’s our curiosity that brings them all to life! (the reverse of the idiom “curiosity kills the cat”. Also refers to the Schrödinger’s cat; ignoring the cat in the box and keeping it locked makes it half-dead. It’s not dead, nor alive. However, once you open it, it can be alive. It’s just curiosity that brings them to that status.) I was a funny thing floating out on the river, a tattered piece of cloth all washed up by the rain. ...let’s be careful with red paint cause soon we’re going to learn. (I dunno this. Might be Iku since the cloth is pale with red trailing behind. Then again, Iku is based on the oarfish, a legendary creature that could be the basis of the sea serpent. This is farfetched though.) The eye that holds the truth is the eye that observes it (again. Schrödinger.) So we won’t close our eyes and she won’t have our tongue (referencing the idiomatic phrase “cat got your tongue?”. The cat not grtting their tongue meaning the two aren’t going to stay silent...) Let her out of the bag now and back into the wild! (...for they will convey every secret this hidden plane of existence, this world of half-reality, and half-fantasy, has to offer.) EDIT: Here, there is a world yet only seen by the physicists and the magicians (Renko and Maribel respectively as the physicist and the scientist) For the tales of the old are the fears of the young (The Japanese folktales emerged from the fears of young people at that time. The young people then became old and told these scary tales of beasts to their young. This cycle continues on.) As our fear pulls us forward, we venture to explore. (Fear leads to curiosity sometimes. This curiosity can lead people into exploring and concluding if a thing they feared of is real or not.)

Thank you for the analysis~ I suppose there's nothing wrong with imagining Rin as the bakeneko, but the intent was definitely Chen, due to her link with Yukari and wanting to play up those connections as much as possible. The opening bit is meant to perhaps be doubly read from Yukari's point of view, speaking of either Chen or of Merry herself as the lost kitten. The "diaper hat" is called a mobcap, by the way, but Chen's PCB portrait also features a bowtie on her chest. I don't believe there's been a canon picture of Chen in full cat form like Rin, so it's just speculation, but Merry is suggesting that cat-Chen wears that bow around her neck. I also tend to imagine that Chen would be identifiable as a cat by her single earring, but that didn't flow as nicely in the song. The verse about dye in the water is specifically referencing a metaphor they discuss in the DLFR story. The line says "wet paint," not red paint, so it doesn't necessarily have to be red. It has to with how information gets muddled as it passes between worlds, and how things that rub off on each other can get irreversibly corrupted... which might be compared to humans who meddle with the occult. Merry is wondering if some contamination might occur if she were to interact more with youkai like the bakeneko. Infamously ominous line from DLFR: "If contaminants get mixed in, they've got to be eliminated." I'm glad you pointed out the Tinkerbell effect.~ It's something I absolutely love to talk about, the relationship between fantasy things and the humans who believe in them. And it's certainly the main point of this song in particular. I'm also very proud of that reverse "curiosity" line and how it connects to it.

Asa, I've called you a goddess at least once before and I still think I'm right. A little late to comment, but I jumped on this as soon as I saw it in my sub box with immense excitement. It's thanks to you that I discovered this song in the WIP and I had been watching a friend play through the Zero Escape series at the time (TONS of physics references, the classic Schrodinger's cat included) and I've felt this couldn't have come at a better time. Really great lyrics, but for some reason I can't help but feel like the ending of it is kinda sad, like as if Gensokyo will forever be sealed off and erased, to never be mentioned or remembered again.

Aw, that definitely isn't what it meant to imply! I even decided to add in the meow at the last second to clarify that the dead/alive cat is, in fact, alive. The classic phrase says that "curiosity killed the cat" but, as per Gensokyo's rule of the opposite of common sense, curiosity is what keeps youkai alive; they are born of people's imaginings and fears. The outside world has grown very willfully ignorant of things like youkai, but so long as there are curious people like the Hifuu Club, I think they will be just fine. Of course, that's a rather simplistic view from the perspective of outsiders, regarding the existence of myths in our own perception. (The overall concept of the song is honestly a bit silly, and just reflects the mindset I am always most interested in, about dreamlike things that can be said to exist just because they exist in someone's mind.) Beyond that, Gensokyo has its own better internal measures of sustaining itself and there's even less reason it will be erased just because of us. That was the point of sealing it off in the first place. If the intro/ending sounds too foreboding -- it *is* supposed to be a little foreboding, but not necessarily in that kind of way. The "cat" that Merry saw is separated from its "home" by a measure of "time," not a measure of "distance." That is, it has crossed dimensions from the past-sealed Gensokyo to the future outside world. As a secondary subtext, however, perhaps Merry herself is the lost kitten, and she is separated from her destination (entering into Gensokyo) not by a physical distance she needs to travel, but by a "matter of time" until her powers develop and she becomes a youkai herself.
