What's even worse is that most riders have at least (3) bikes...not including time trial bike. Even if they win a green/polka-dot jersey, it wouldn't pay for most teams' main and backup bikes for that rider. Horrible ROI.

@@Dhamirs I think UAE pay Tadej around €6m per season - and that's excluding prize money and sponsorships. It's peanuts compared to other sports, but he's not going to bed hungry.

I think the prize money of the winner is just a bonus because each rider has a guaranted contract money from their respective team. And the team is only after on the advertisement of their products aside from the prize money.

While bench players of other sports make an easy 1 million just keeping seats warm for the starters haha. So sad that's why we need POGI & JONAS & Remco throwing words for the drama etc. It's entertaining which will bring views which brings in money.

There are other spots that are life risking as well & those sport get paid more than cyclists with very little commitment/risk to something like a grand tour. Without risk/valor there will not be any glory/triumphant.

Tadej is on €6-7 million per year excluding prize money and sponsorships. He's doing well, man. Ineos, Visma, UAE and a few other teams operate with massive budgets.

@issahgyandi3365 - still doesn't compare to a NBA or NFL player. Bench player easily makes a million not counting their outside pay. That's what I'm talking about. You think a mid or super domestiqe makes that? Nope. Maybe someone like Sepp or Wout but look what they have to do before even making that type of pay but a kid out of college can make that already when they get drafted. Numbers don't lie. Look at mid level NBA or NFL player that has never got mvp or some sort of accolade can make what Tade makes in a course of 2 to 3 years in their game.

Of course, those sports have ACTION able to be shown on TV--> Cycling has zero action worth mentioning and the ability to capture that action is VERY expensive compared to those other sports. Likewise the common populace almost NO ONE goes bike riding competitively whereas football, everyone has played and knows the rules etc.

Track and Field/marathon/swimming make even less... whine whine whine whine... They make zero money because NO ONE WATCHES as they aren't monetizable and there is ~zero action(boring)--> Just like cycling. Money in vrs money out is very low for TV as common person does not care.

Football wages are obscene. Not one footballer could do a stage of the TDF. I’m sure everyone of the cyclists in this years TDF could play a game of football. The England team is overrated they scraped through to the final and lost. They should not be payed for their performance

Because none of the peloton would do ANYTHING in a pro football game either. Cycling as a sport has next to zero ticket sales. They only make money from sponsors, cities paying to be part of the race, and tv deals. Also the race is not entertaining except the final sprint of most stages. Despite it being an amazing sport and it has the toughest athletes, it isn’t a very good business model.

Good thing their real salaries don't come from the races prizes... Riders and team participate to a race for exposure : the more their are seen, the most likely they will attract a good sponsor that's ready to cash in millions for the riders, the staff, the logistics and équipements... 600.000 € for Tadej who won the Tour with 6 stages and 19 days with the yellow jersey is pocket money compared to his 8 millions euros annual salary.

I understand there would be a lot of overhead costs when organising, filming and coordinating the entire Tour. Yet the organisers charge alot of the departures ans arrival cities and towns and extraordinary amount of money to host, plus sponsors, plus endorsements of their own, so surely they can pay the riders more as they are the stars! The very same happened with the PGA. Players threatened to leave and they got their payrise. Cyclists should strike
