Did Eddie Merckx have competition like Tadej, Jonas and MVDP for his wins? I don't know because it was way before my time, but Eddie's stats are crazy. Nobody can come near.

I'am 61 years old and an Die Hard Cycling Fan,and i remember like it was yesterday the first time that the world nottest that Small Frame in that huge bike was capable of beating anyone on the professional cycling world when the road started to go uphill in a very Scary and Overwhelming way. Marco Pantani was the most Brave and Powerfull Climber in professional cycling. No one was able to go with him when Pantani did enter on that explosive climbing mode. The Best Climber in Cycling History. RIP Marco,you are a Legend. PS: And that Huge POS of a human being that is Lance Armstrong saying " that he regret give the Victory to Pantani" is the Epitome of an Professional Criminal Cheater at is Best. The name Lance Armstrong should be Erased from any Cycling publication,sites,books and above all from cycling History.

He'll probably do neither, but he'd be better off doing the Vuelta. In his quest to be Eddy Merckx, Tadej is going to be gunning for worlds and the monuments. Jonas could have won the Vuelta in 2023, but cycling fans revolted and thought Primoz and Jonas should bestow the honors on super domestique Sepp Kuss (as a cycling fan, I agreed).

Eddy was a " chemicaly enhanced" rider. 100%. 1. He was caught. And 2. I was a close friend of one of the sons of his 'Pharmacist" = Willy Jeandarme. I met him at an old age but he talked fondly about his frienship wiith Eddy . His children, of whom some are medical professionals themselves, are aware of his "help" and their lasting friendship.Private pictures and Eddies sweat stained jerseys on the walls testament to their friendship. The stories are quite amazing. The media in Belgium just dont want to stain the legacy, and by now they're in way to deep.

Think what you forget is Remco is a little younger than both in years but much younger in terms of cycling experience, and yet his performance in the Tour was better than both Pogacar and Vingegaard at the same age (one of the mountain stages the 3 dished out the top 3 performances of the modern era i.e. turn of the century). People saying he can't climb sort of miss the point that he can climb better than Pogacar and JV could a year ago and ignore the fact that everyone said he would capitulate and instead he got on the podium comfortably. In the final TT the issue in my eyes was more the descent - if he learns to handle his bike better that alone will close a chunk of the gap to the top 2.

You can not compare these eras. Cycling has become way more professional. As a Belgian, I do not compare Eddy Merx with Remco Evenepoel. Different eras, like I said. Remco is just the most talented rider we had in years, no doubt. Till now, his palmarès is outstanding in this era. In the era of Eddy Merx all riders rode basically all race's. This era not. Riders choose their races and work/train accordingly. You just can not compare.
@dpcater
@dpcater 22 сағат бұрын
You can compare FTP and say with absolute certainty that Remco on power would demolish him. You can speculate that Eddy would be even better in terms of power with modern nutrition, science and training, but it's speculation. All we know for certain is that if we are saying who was the best of all time, Eddy isn't in that conversation as peak Eddy is at least 0.5 w/kg worse than top Tour riders.
@yvesgysel9834
@yvesgysel9834 19 сағат бұрын
I know what you are getting at, but Eddy Merx, that's more than 40 years ago. Like you said better nutrition, science, bikes, personal condition trainer and so on...More Money involved nowadays. So it's not fear to compare. I agree with you that riders are better nowadays, but it's just completely different. You can only speculate, like you said. What if the young "Eddy Merx" would ride today??? Maybe he would do more w/per kg??? Do not forget, in the era of "Eddy" the contracts of (even topriders)were peanuts, compared to the contracts nowadays. So that's why price money of races were much more important. Listen Eddy Merx was simply the best rider in his era. I red some books and his competitors, knew when "Eddy" goes, there's nothing we can do about it. He rides at least 5 kilometers pro/hour faster than us. (Famous qoute) Hence, he's nickname "The Cannibal", riding everything and winning everything. Monuments, GC'S... That was a different era, orher riders also rode everything. So he became "the goat of cycling" Like Michael Jordan in the NBA. Than people start to compare any future exeptional rider with "The Goat", which is wrong in my opinion. @dpcater
@dpcater
@dpcater 17 сағат бұрын
@@yvesgysel9834 Yes think we're pretty much agreed. But to be clear what I am saying is we know, factually, today's riders would destroy the Eddy Merckx that existed. We can only speculate whether Eddy would have performed at their level or above today, we don't know that he would at all. And he did all that on drugs, which he was caught taking on numerous occasions. Given the access to nutrition, sports science, training methodologies etc today is ubiquitous, setting yourself apart from the competition is even tougher than in his day, so it makes sense that someone would highlight a rider like Pogacar as The Goat, as what he is accomplishing today winning monuments/classics/grand tours, is easily as impressive as anything Eddy did back then. I can tell you one thing, Eddy Merckx isn't winning all jersey's in a TdF in today's peloton, so people highlighting something like that as a point of difference are either deluded or uneducated.

Cycling Dane, get your bloody facts correct! They are NOT monuments they are classics! There are more than 5, Milan SanRemo, Ghent Wevelghem, Tour of Flanders, Paris Roubaix, Liege Bastogne Liege, Paris Tours, Tour of Lombardy, the now defunct Bordeaux Paris. Only ONE rider has won all 7 , (Bordeaux Paris not being counted), That is The Emperor, Rik VanLooy. Merckx in fact has won 6 of the 7 CLASSICS. He never won Paris Tours, although he did race it. Facts boy, facts!

Ahhh, for all you young ones and hopefuls, sorry to burst your bubble, but absolutely NO ONE, NO racing cyclist can or will ever earn the title Le Cannibale, that is solely Eddy! Only Eddy was so hungry he won ALL Guernseys in the same Le Tour, Won big bunch sprints, dropped everyone on the flat, uphill, downhill. But Eddy used to race local criteriums to bring in more money for the local riders, he was aware of their struggles! Nope, what everyone forgets is that for most of his career Eddy raced with an injured back, making his feats even more stupendous. So sorry, but NO, not Remco, not Sagan, certainly not Vinegar, not even Pog, (who obviously has read Eddy's book), will ever reach the heights to be labelled Cannibale!

Stop compairing with someone of the past that is incomparable due to not only the cycling equipment but also a whole other level of mental and nutrition mind wich wasnt present during the Merckx era.
