Absolutely true. They work the hardest among professional athletes or sportsmen of any discipline. For examples, the top F1 drivers probably receive more than 20 million, basketball, baseball or football players all more than that.

Cyclings answer to footballs universally beloved "one club players". Which is admirable in a way. What is even more admirable is that he seems to be forever motivated and does not need a change of air to inspire him. I think that is something to take note of, and it makes him even more special.

A video on the economics of teams would be interesting. I didn't realize top riders made that much. Seems that there's an enormous difference of pay within teams. I have no idea what the brands behind teams sell. Do they get business from that visibility, or is it just vanity? Do teams pay for bikes? Does such high pay correlate with such high bike prices?

Relax there is no big money for wages in cycling. In reality the riders actually deserve to be paid more. Only a few select riders get multi-million contracts. The majority of Domestique riders are paid very little.

According to the amount of work the riders do accross the season their salaries are quite low compared to other sports. Some teams seem to overpay looking at the results (Ineos).

Why? What matters most ist the TDF, that is where people watch and sponsors want to perform. And as good as MVDP is in classics, he is not the best rider in the TDF. There, the attention is with Pogacar and Vingegaard. And there is no doubt that Pogacar is the best rider in the world by a margin.

It´s a bit odd. I would say the big three without a doubt are Pogacar, Vingegaard and Van der Poel. Behind that there should be a gap to Evenepoel, Roglic and Van Aert (in that order). I think Roglic and Van Aert are a bit too high on this list imo.

Peanuts for how tough cycling is but that’s the economics of sport/life. TP, MVDP, JV, WVA, RE, PR based on current ability. WVA still best all around just isn’t best at one thing plus makes mistakes/bad luck. 2021 tour wins - ITT, mt ventoux and champs. No other rider on this list would have a prayer of doing that and you’ll never see it again

likely just the contract salaries not including any extra endorsements or bonuses but the highest paid riders usually don't get bonuses for winning as they are expected to win which is why they have the high salaries to begin with. inside scoop from Chris Horner when he talked about pro compensation

He won the tour of flanders, twice tour of france, wins liege-bastogne-liege, lombardia, wins time trials, has a sprint if he wants, won strade bianche, i even see him win Paris-roubaix one day. Vingegaard will never achieve that kind of level. Calling him a one trick pony is a bit condescending though, agreed.

NFL salaries are a function of the economics of US professional team sports, the same as soccer in Europe but totally different to professional cycling. The top professional cyclists are just as famous in Europe as the top NFL/MLB stars in the US. Conversely the top NFL/MLB stars would be as unknown in Europe as the top cyclists in the US. NBA/NHL would be a partial exception in parts of Europe where they are popular.
